aircraft used to form up for night patrols by following the lead's stack flare ... this would be cool to simulate ... do any sims have this?

Good point! The dull, but quite noticable glow, from an a/c exhaust stack can be seen from a good distance in the right direction. LOL, I can't remember if FB has this. It would be a nice feature.

I find it very difficult, if not impossible to fly in close formation at night without trying to join two planes together without a welding torch.

Wondered how it was done in RL without any nav lights.

exhaust flare could be visible from kilometers

In ORR a few months ago Oleg discussed this and also exhaust smoke when applying throttle and stated FPS as the problem, he gave the example of the FPS hit when planes start on the runway

But nobody is interested in smoke, but the exhaust flame visible at night. Static flame modelled does not need internal motion of its own. And its importance is in long range visibility at night, so the close~up grafix detail is of no gaming importance. Forget the smoke, FB has trouble with smoke as it is. But for some reason, multiple contrails have very little frame~rate hit:: maybe because they are static. I dunno.
