View Full Version : A newbie question about the single player missions

Hi all,

I have been with the IL2 thing from the beginning. One of the issues that has always been a sore spot for me with then single player missions is the lack of coordination.

So my question is this:

If I want to fly a bombing mission, can I count on the AI fighter cover to actually provide a CAP to protect my bomb flight?

In the previous titles this, as i said, has been a real problem resulting in non-playable bomb missions in Single Player.

I would love to hear that this has been resolved and/or improved.

Thanks,

I assume you're talking about a bomber escort, rather than a Combat-Air-Patrol (who wouldn't necessarily stick around the bombers...they're job is to stay in one area).

Escorts do happen, but not ALL the time. From what I gather from the data (and from using Lowengrin's DCG), if there is a fighter squadron posted at the airfield at which your bomber squadron is posted, then there is a percentage chance that your flight will recieve an escort on any given mission. Depending on the conditions this percentage can be quite low (your escort squadron may be low on aircraft, for example, or already up covering somebody else).

If you have been assigned an escort flight, they WILL escort you: they fly about 1000 metres above you, slightly behind, and zigzag over you while covering the sky. When you are attacked they will deflect the fighters. Of course the AI isn't that great, so they will run off and chase the fighters rather than sticking with you (unless you're high enough rank to demand they rejoin), leaving you open for another group to attack you.

As far as I know, this has been the case since Forgotten Battles, not much has changed in that respect (no need to fix the escort, it wasn't broken. And the AI isn't going to get any better until the new BoB engine).

Junko is right, from what I've experienced. I never really count on any type of escort. Even when you do get it, there is no telling what'll actually happen. Plan no cover and if they do show up,think of it as an unexpected bonus.
The mission remembered most was a ground strike one in the P-39. The enemy came in head on and made no attempt at the ground attack planes instead they hit the escorts. I figured that would keep them busy so I could at least get to the target. A couple of 109's either turned after the ground attack birds or my cover got shredded real quick. The next thing I know tracers are flying past the canopy and I jettisoned the bomb, faked right & broke left only to explode.
