I am at the very beginning of the career mode 1939 and currently I am on my 4th patrol in U3.

I have not bothered to spend any renown points on it so far, I have a 1st flotilla badge on the conning tower, and I have a flak cannon in front of the sail.

So what I want to know is, am I having a good run with it...

So far, I have destroyed

1 Hurricane
2 C2 Cargos
1 Tugboat.

this is patroling in the North Sea, which is really quiet, then again, it is early war. And its only December, so I'm just wondering if Im doing ok?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I usually patrol right along the eastern seaboard of the UK as many merchants hug the coastline. I am curious, are you using any mods such as Grey wolves, or playing the original game ?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I think you are doing fine. I remember some of my earlier patrols in the Type IIA I was lucky to see two ships in a single patrol let alone hit them. Of course as the war goes on you should see a pick up in traffic. You might want to try roaming out of the North Sea though you really have to be conscious of your fuel supply. This boat was a coastal u-boat. She is a lot of fun in harbors. You should get the GW download for harbor traffic. This is were this sub is fun because of size. She be slow though http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Needs some more torpedoes!!!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The last thing I heard as the British boarded my boat, "Boot hoch halten sonst wird keiner gerettet!"....Keep the boat afloat or no one will be rescued! My war was over....

This has happened to me Psych, I have had a few patrols in the IIA and seen absolutely nothing, had a few faint readings on the hydrophone, but nothing concrete. my third patrol was probably the most frustrating.

My first ship I needed 3 torps to sink, the first was a dud! That left me with 2. I saw a tugboat, which I sank in one hit by doing a keelbreaker on it, 1 torp left, saw another ship a big C2, attacked with my last torp, it hit, but didn't do enough to sink it, so had to return to port. On my way back I saw a further two merchant ships, but had to sail on past regardless.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Type-II boats are lots of fun. I've started using U-4 (a Type-IIA) in out multiplayer games, and compete against the Type-IXs that the others use. It really is a good way to hone your skills, when suddenly every single torpedo really, really counts.

One thing I found was that it forces you to be really critical with your positioning and with the placement of the shot against the enemy ship.

C2 cargo ships are notoriously difficult to sink, and sometimes I've "wasted" three or four torpedoes getting one to go down. However, t is very rewarding, and the multiple patrols in a short space of time mean that you can get a qualified crew pretty quickly.

I like the idea of trying to get through the entire war on "realistisch" difficulty with just a Type-II boat. Maybe with an upgrade to the IID at some point (they can dive pretty quickly!). Hmm.... *ponder*<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

its pretty cool that subs destroy more planes than the avrage luftwaffe pilot does

maybe a bit unrealistic

hope itl get more difficult in SH4<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
