View Full Version : A bit illogical, but still....

I was surprised a whie ago when I approached a T2 tanker with an intention to set its cargo on fire with the deck gun. It saw me and I thought it started evading. However, it showed me its rear, with a big gun barrel sticking out. Had to crash dive that time. It seems a bit illogical to have guns on tankers (oil/gasoline+fire don't mix usually). But then I thought, if Russian fishing boats, tugs, whatever had to be equipped with depth charges and sonar, why not put guns on flammable ships? Seems weird, but i guess desperate times call for desperate measures...

I have a model T-2 tanker that has two deck guns (one for and one aft) and some machine guns on it as well.

The idea that the ships were floating bombs is slightly exagerated.

Just to drive home the point one of the escort carrier models were just convert T-2's. I think the Bogues but I am not sure on that. Anyway, the conversion only really changed the upper decks and the ships kept many of the tanks for freighting oil and fuel. Sometimes they would be on convoy escort duty with aircraft while freighting oil at the same time.

Think about how unsafe that would be if the reputation was fully acurate. If one damaged plane doesn't land right.... A plane engine backfires....

I am not saying they are as safe as inert cargo, just that they were not bombs waiting to blow at the slightest provocation either.
