And will Oleg's next sim be more advanced than LOMAC?

Very curious about that.

Yes LOMAC will be more advanced. Any plane in LOMAC would make quick work of any plane in IL-2 because of their superiority and the 60 years of extra development.

Don't forget that FB now, is essentially two years old...

FB was a modification of the original Il-2 engine and that game was released two years ago, on November the 29th, 2001.

Correct. I would expect that Maddox Games next sim will be a more advanced piece of software though.

I flew LOMAC at the European Computer Show along with FB months before that came out too, so they have both been doing the rounds as long........in a way

Hows lomac more advanced? seems like the same engine only 8 flyable planes, maybe 9. planes still pivot on 1 center axis, the computer systems in the cockpit dont make the game more advanced and by seeing all the videos of lockon the explosions dont look very good. The terrain seems the same and sky quality, They look like the same trees fb uses very low poly 3d models. It definatly seems like the same game engine to me with some new fx. People say its a completely different engine but still has sound probs, pauses and poor online performance. Im definatly not buying lockon

It's running an advanced version of the Flanker 2.0 engine, not the same as IL2.

Are you suggesting Oleg licensed its engine to the guys that are doing LOMAC? lol

Both engines look *very* different to me.

Back on topic, Lockon should be more advanced than IL2 (FB), in fact, is not even released and as said before IL2 engine is 2 years old, but I have my doubts about it. Sure terrain looks very good, but the sky and clouds are better in IL2. Also, cockpits in Lomac look very 2D.

Is looking at Lomac, a sim released hopefully 2 years IL2 and still not clearly superior in graphics performance, and looking at things like CFS3, that you realize how bloody marvelous is IL2.

Will probebly have much more accurate flight models than in IL2/FB do to fewer planes. Of course sensor modeling is up in the air. Flanker 2.x had crappy sensor modeling so who knows. Hopefully it will be good.

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

The back of my IL2 CD says Lock on:Avaialable Spring 2002.

So it must have an engine that is not much more advanced than IL2.

Just because a game takes forever to come out, doesn't mean that it's engine is modern (example: Shadowbane)

from what Ive gathered about lock-on and the FM is that the game ships with high fidelity for about half the planes and the other half will get their FM upgrade with a patch.I think I read that this is why the sim is taking so long and that they all will ship with high fidelity FM's.Well see.

LOMAC will use alot of shaders and its using D3D.
i would say it more advance than FB.
and i hope they use P.S 2.0

RBJ is right, this thing is taking forever to come out. Kinda as long as the ministers gay son.....

Anyone remember Silent Hunter II? Great game but dated before it ever hit the shelves some three years late.

The only think LOMAC will have that IL-2 doesn't is JETS! Oh now hold on... IL-2 has jets also /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

In regards to feel for the flight, ground textures, the sky and clouds, IL-2 is still the best by far!

I guess the only thing that's much better in LOMAC is the lighting and the CPU required to play it with decent frame rate /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Ehhh, Lo-Mac has self-shadowing and heat-blur effects, which is very much more advanced than what FB offers. It looks like it willl be ONE HELL of a game!

Check out some of the movies, they're awesome...

They are both great games.

Besides the trees in IL-2/FB don't look very well at low altitudes, which is where you will be when flying the a-10 and su-25. The self-shadowing, bump mapped water, heat blur should be interesting. Also the terrain is based on satellite photo's and not the generic/repetitive/abstract terrain textures used in IL-2/FB. The reason why it has "only" so "few" planes is because there's a lot more work to put in modern jets than in a simple prop (and we all know how much complaining there is about these "simple" props' performance). In IL-2 you make the external 3d model (and LOD's I presume), you make the textures, you make the cockpit. What you don't have to do is make the HUD, radar, the MFD's, model advanced weapon systems, not just free fall bombs and rockets. High fidelity flight sims of modern jets have previously been limited to 1 flyable aircraft. Lomac has a lot more.

In essence: they are both great games, but you shouldn't compare them. Why choose one of them, when you can have both. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

RBJ: "So it must have an engine that is not much more advanced than IL2."
Doesn't sound like you know much about lomac's development history.

No, I don't know anything about LOMAC, other than it was supposed to be relesed 1.5 years ago.

I don't have a supercomputer and don't really care for that style of "point and click dogfighting", so I will wait for it to be in the bargain bin for $10 before I pick it up.

About the only thing I'll get out of it is going really fast like in the movie FireFox. (or FoxFire) Hopefully the cockpit can be turned off so I can see better.

Here's to settings where no rockets are allowed and people can dogfight with bullets and no cockpits.

Absolutely! I love IL-2 but the ground looks so boring! Lomacs ground look more interesting and realistic. That's the biggest different in these the games.I don't know if the ground is better in IL-2:FB but I've seen screenshots and the ground doesn't look very different than in the original IL-2.
