Got a question. Why do the Americans celebrate this day!?

I´m from Germany, so i don´t know it...

basically, Dr-Brot, the Pilgrims from England came to America and shared the Native Americans' land, then when the Indians had taught them all about farming and how to find food, the Pilgrims killed the Indians

But Thanksgiving is about when the Indians and the Pilgrims were still together, living peacefully

Seems to me a bit like our "Erntedankfest" with the diffence that it´s a Catholic day...

And why it´s being celebrated with the whole family!? What does that have to do with Indians and their help for the "White People"/discoverer??

Happy Thanksgiving. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

YAY for excuses for really good food. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

@ dr-bot: Because that's how it was back then. It was a day to be thankful for life, so it would be celebrated with those close to you. >_>

What's wrong with celebrating with family? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif they're there for a reason, and not just to buy you presents for Christmas.

Don't you love the words "or so"? (yay)

Besides, I'd like to count how many times during those days you get some form of leftovers... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

Unlike a month with Arabs that don't understand the term "leftover". *w*

oblargh. Missed the "or so". >_<

...quick edit? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

"Waste not, want not". http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Even with some people(not myself) overeating we have leftovers, but those get finished quickly. XD nothing goes to waste~!

...at least where I live. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

...So did you mean "don't understand the term 'leftover'" as in you let food go to waste, or you just eat it all? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

It's in the Arabic genes to toss food that's an hour old out the window. '>_> <_<'

Only slight exaggerations were made...

But I find it funny how the common belief is that Americans tend to eat a lot... you people need to visit this part of the world sometime. >_>
Fable can vouch for that...

We love our food, and we love it fresh. *w*
We're so spoilt.

There is nothing wrong with it!!
It was just a little bit confusing...

.
i think thats more of a thing with being in a hot country, food doesnt cope too well
im guessing its also to do with hygine like;

burying the dead within 24hrs
not eating pork (cus pigs r carnivors and so unclean)
no crustations (cus they crawl along the bottom of the sea amongst all the fish poop)

n stuff like that.

Oh, duh, we don't have refrigerators. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Oh, and hygiene has nothing to do with it.

It's actually because it's not proper in Arabic culture (as it is in most cultures) to serve guests leftovers, but Arabs have taken it to the next level, in which case they don't even serve themselves leftovers.

Don't bring up irrelevant junk.

In fact, Arabs used to make sure that they preserved their food for as long as possible in the past.

Living in a desert is no open buffet.
They had to make sure that whatever food they had with them would remain with them for as long as possible, so you're still wrong.

The "culture" we have today is very different from what it was back then in terms of food...
We actually have a lot of it now.
