View Full Version : Is there a big performance improvement from 66.93 to 81.95?

Not sure this is an easy question to answer. I've been using the 66.93's for quite a while since most of the other recent drivers have been having issues. I hear the 81.95's are good for PF, however, if there's not a significant performance improvement, there's no reason to upgrade as everything else I play runs fine with 66.93.

Bump. I'd like to know too. I went to 81.94 a month or so ago, and I get occasional computer crashes while in the game, and a stutter or two that I never got with the earlier drivers (77.something?).

i'm getting ready to upgrade this 5900se to a 6600gt and would also like to know which of the newer drivers to use. been using the 56.72 drivers for the 5900se card with no stutters. but this 5900se isn't very strong and doesn't take advantage of dx9.0 very well..

Ive used the 81.95s for a few weeks now and on my pc they seem to be the best Ive ran yet. 6800Ultra, P4 2.7, 1G.

I have older nVidia FX5600 and it seems that it does not like new drivers (had problems with missing textures etc. in 402). It seems that best for it are 66.93 so far.

Everytime I upgrade drivers, I get stutters. Not sure I see an advantage of upgrading.

some folks have problems from day one with video or an issue with a specific program. so driver upgrades may help them. i've been using the same ones with no problems so i don't want to mess up a good thing. and any performance gains from upgrades are probably too small to gamble. still using 77.77 until i reformat or have probs.

always remove old drivers, reboot, then install new ones.

With the new Nvidia drivers, i also recieved frequent and very tiny stutters when down low.

But if you download the new PF DLL's, the stutters are gone and I can now run confidently Water = 3

So in answer to the original question. Latest nvidia drivers did not produce much of a performance boost.

New Nvidia drivers and new PF DLL's and i have now got a massive performance boost.

I upgraded to the 81.95 from the 66.93 more than a month ago. I have no issues with the driver and it works well for the 6800GT, Also upgraded to the new dll's and found another significant improvement. These are the best so far for me.

Well, newer drivers than 77.77 causes graphical glitches - artifacts - with my 6600. It's still like that with 81.94.

Still thinking if it's worth downloading the 81.95 or not.

And no, I'm not overclocking my card.

I get the same results as aero_shodanjo. Wierd artifacting on 6600GT with 81.95s. Haven't tried the new dlls with the latest drivers though.

Well Aero - you should download the new DLL's

Eveyone i know who runs it on Nvidia says exactly the same thing.

Fixes the stutter and gives huge performance boost. I tried it for the first time extensively on sunday. I now run water = 3 no probs. (and i prefer game play performance over eyecandy)

Its definitely a must get in my opinion.

Thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Already installed the new dll and yes, it's an improvement with the current driver Im using.

Will try the 81.94 again. If the artifacts are gone, then maybe I'll download the 81.95.

Hopefully Guru3d has re-compressed it by then, 30 mb download is a bit too long to download from herehttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You can get them here:

I would suggest backing up your originals incase you have issues with these new ones.

The 81.95's have been the best by far for my AMD 3500+/7800 GTX.

How the hell did I miss this?,

...new DLL's and water=4! Sheesh! I gotta keep my eyes open.

I don't know about water = 4.

Some tree sets and very large towns will cause a tiny stutter for me at water = 3, but is rare.

I think water = 4 would be way over the top

So water=4 is to be considered more graphics intensive than water=3?

Just a follow up for anyone who's interested. I installed the new dll's and the 81.95 drivers four days ago and checked it out with water=3. I never bothered with that before, so I don't have a yardstick per se to measure against, but I can say that the game runs smooth, frame rates seem good, and I haven't had any hiccups or comp crashes. They seem like a good deal eso far (four solid evenings of flying a bunch of different offline missions and campaigns). and frame rates

I'm using 81.95 on this system:
AMD Athlon64 x2 4400+
7800GT
2 GB RAM
WinXP Pro
This is new (2 weeks old) system.

System is smooth as long as it runs (straight "excellent" mode), HOWEVER, I'm getting a BSOD anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes into a game. Typically I am on Teamspeak while flying. The cause appears to be a file called: nvmcp.sys which is an audio codec. On the web I found that Sim City users had this same problem. In talking with the computer manufacturer (JNCS) they said that there appears to be issues with the dual core and nForce boards. Rumor has it that nVidia is working out issues and new drivers (last ones are 10/26/05) will be out in the near future.
Anyone else with this sort of system encounter this problem? If so, check out "Tong's Family Blog" they seem to be capturing comments from the Sim City community.
