View Full Version : Disheartened beyond belief - Forum behaviour

While I don't normally post very often, I do follow the boards infrequently for useful info, particularly for ways to improve the running of FB on my comp, to this extent the forums have been particularly useful for me, and I thank people for taking the time to share their knowledge with others.

However I am in disbelief when I read some of the topics of hot debate, an obvious recent one is the saga of the FW190 view for example. It seems that some people are posting to defend what they view as 'right' as if their lives depended on it and replying to others as though 'they're' in the secret pay of UBI or 1C. The amount of personal attack (is that what flaming is?) that gets posted when views are in opposition, amazes me.

If that's not enough when 'stuff' gets posted about what is 'wrong' about the game, and people don't get the kind of answer they wish, they attack the game and occasionally the makers of the game as though it's a piece of alpha BS. That should never been released.

I have been playing flight sims, since the days of the ZX-80/81 (anyone remember that!) etc etc. My point is IMHO this game:

1. is the best combat flight sim to date. It is the most convincing in terms of realism, it is the most complete in terms of what you get for your money (single missions, campaign, online, FMB etc)
2. from experience of other flight sims, it has also (for me) been the most stable and playable from the word go.
3. most importantly, I have never seen such a relationship from creators to customers that I have witnessed since purchasing the original IL-2. I think it is very unique and should be treasured and respected.

With this said we are provided with the privilege service of these forums with which to maintain and remain a community. However so many posts end up forgetting the above points and show high levels of arrogance and disrespect, and from what I have seen this has only got worse with time (dare I mention the PL?). To some degree I am surprised at the tolerance of 1C and UBI, it must be tempting for them at times to just go and pull the plug on us all. I am glad that has not happened to date.

So from one who wishes to see the community, and its relationship with Oleg and IC continue to stay strong and grow (to the benefit of us all) I would ask people to consider the way they go about posting their 'views'. At least try and keep derision out of your posts. Be grateful for what we have and don't be blinded by wants so much so that we lose what we have.

Just my opinion of course

99.9999% percent agree with you. The last part of this sentence consists in the 0.0001% I'm not agree with you:

- 1. is the best combat flight sim to date. It is the
- most convincing in terms of realism, it is the most
- complete in terms of what you get for your money
- (single missions, campaign, online, FMB etc)

In terms of FMB is by far of being the "most complete". Really far. Just my 0.02 euro.

I meant that it includes one as part of the package, in that sense it is 'complete', it may have some deficiencies etc in terms of what we would like in it, but IMO it is still very usable, and therefore a strengh of the game.

Would you prefer me to be specific, if I were to do that wouldn't I then be accused of making personal attack. If you are making reference to my using the example of the FW190 view (just a guess on my part), it was used as I said as an example of the point of my post, there are others I could have used, but that topic is recent, so I used it.

In my book using an example is not 'finger pointing', and I would hope that it taken that way by all who read this.

I do appreciate that words can easily be misinterpreted on these forums so that is why I kept my post 'generalised'.

If you disagree then ok, but please refrain from making assumptions on what I have tried to say, if its not clear, then ask first, please don't shoot first.

Thankyou

Well thats nice, but I suspected something like that.

Playing the innocent, using nothing but "an example", which is (by accident, as I assume) the "hottest" topic on these forums nowadays.

In my books you are nothing but a troll, coming along like a preacher, but becoming aggressive at the first statement of slightly disagreement.

You wants to tell me or us how to behave?

But then again I might give you the benefit of doubt that you don`t know better -

as a "infrequently" user.

Did I not say that if you disagree then thats ok.

Agressive?? Sorry have I missed something, have I attacked you, called you names etc. No I havent and will not.

Doesn't using a 'hottest' topic for an example indicate something other than 'trolling'( if that's referring to 'trolling' through the threads)

Anyway if you wish to attack me then fine, I will not respond with the same, but I do feel your post is an example of my point.

The pilots lounge was this place you could go to find some humor. Sure, there were some flame wars, but generally it was a good natured place to hang out for a laugh or two.

Then that whole war started in the middle east and a whole bunch of trolls and flag wavers showed up and really ruined the place. I thought it was necessary to close it at the time, but now I kinda miss it. UBI has decided not to re-open a new one so now we talk about vulching and pings.

People have every right to defend their opinion as if their lives depend on it if they want. To many people, the way they choose to entertain themselves is as important as any other aspect of their lives, so it shouldn't be surprising that strong arguments develop over issues such as computer gaming. In many ways, our lives DO depend on what we're arguing about, since a large proportion of our free time is spent on the subject we're discussing in these forums. As for people replying to others as if they're in the secret pay of Ubi or 1C, I've never seen anyone accuse any other forum member of being secretly in cahoots with Ubi or 1C.

- The amount of personal attack (is

Each side, in my experience, is guilty of that.

One thing is for sure - however great a product is, there's always room for improvement, and critical voices are necessary for positive change. That's why Oleg's Ready Room exists. I see a lot of posts on that forum flaming those who have raised serious criticisms that deserve more than abuse. Even the very best product can use constructive criticism, and even the very best product has plenty of room for improvement, yet it seems that many people are of the opinion that criticism and evolution are bad things. If everyone thought that way, human beings would never have developed language, harnessed fire, invented the wheel, or made any positive change to their environment. I never cease to be amazed by the vast numbers of folks who seem never to want to see any change, and who respond violently to those who would propose positive change. The attitude of these folks is regressive, and can never result in anything but stagnation and extinction of the product they think they are trying to support.

Those who are critical of Forgotten Battles are its true supporters. Those who want to preserve it as it is (and who, consequently, will not allow it to evolve into the best product it can be) are those who will kill it fastest.

Mods live in a shoebox in the middle of a highway.
Cartrix wakes us up two hours before we go to bed.
Then he beats us to death before we have to clean the highway lickin it clean.
And if we're lucky Cartrix will gives a grain of sand...per day...to split among us for food.

Leonid, how are you doing?
I think that what the original poster ment was that he finds it sad that good, valid posts are obscured by posts like:

"Oleg, you are not the man with honour. You are just one typical scum who doesn't stand sraight- Why it is so difficult to admit the bug???
It stands there with capital letters. You just can't twist it anyhow."

and

"some planes have way too good visibility from cockpit. could something to be done for this??"

But I'm sure noone minds posts like:

"First, thank you for the excellent simulation!
I was wondering if it at all possible to have the ability to move to a specific time when playing back a track.
For example, if I have a track of 5 minutes in lenght and there is an event I want to watch which occurs at 3 min 40 secs, can I scroll to that time (or maybe even just type in the start time)?
I know I can do the time-compression thing, but with tracks upwards of 20 minutes, it still takes a lot of time to get to a specific section of the track.
Thanks and again, excellent simulation!!"

and

"Salute - Oleg : Reminder - Ship DM (online DFmode).
this problem is specific to dogfight-mode
currently the only ship that clients can sink are the russian "trawlers". They were sunk on my server yesterday with the following methods by clients:
3 x torp from il2
2x heinkel torp
1x il2 torp
2 x 2 heinkel torp
1 x SC500
4 x SC500
2 x VAP250
the damage model is inconsistent ... i actually think thats cool ... even though i dont think thats the way you planned it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
so if clients can sink all types of ships after patch ... with out hammering it with tens of torps .... I would be very happy ... and i know there are server operators with heaps of these maps ... waiting for fix /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
thanks in advance"

Thanks Ven, I`m very fine.

What exactly do you want to know?

You should have noticed that I have already given several serious statements about this topic today.

Unfortunately this thread died by a lack of interest by those who started it.

Instead of that these guys are joking around in ORR, without seeing their thread locked.
Well, I like joking, but I`m sure you have an idea of what I`m talking about...

I assume, Snoopy is to busy with locking threads like "When will the patch be available?"

Are you waiting for an answer referring to your quotes?

Well, see above.

Besides that, if I wasn`t to lazy for that, I would enjoy to present you tons of quotes "the other way round"...

Edit:
Should have spoken about several threads over there in ORR...

But well, lets whine about the bad bad 190-whiners...:|

Certainly we can debate - even heated debates - without becoming vindictive and spiteful followed by that gremlin called pettiness that starts throwing stones with the intent to assassinate character.- Damn. I gotta quite drink beer right after work.

And perhaps we should appreciate the moderators more with some understanding of what they have to deal with very often.

And perhaps we should take some post with face value and accept that there're sincere and are trying to help the community.

I'm all for discussion, and people defending their arguements, every should be able to do this as a basic right.

I'm also aware that without the input from a large group of people, bug fixes and game improvements may take longer to implement. So I do fully support discussion and constructive critism.

My whole point is the way in which some of posts are done, surely it should be possible to do all these things without resorting to personal attacks on people.

I was not saying anything about not wanting change etc. Just the way people go about how they do it at times.

Let's face it, without the relationship as customers/creators that we have, none of that would be possible. I'm saying that I value this and don't wish it lost because of the way people express their views at times. It would be a great loss

leonid05 I think you misunderstand my post, I know you accuse me of things without good reason, but nevermind.

Many do see the point I'm making and Ven (thankyou Ven.) sum's it up nicely.

This has nothing to do with favouritism of plane/side. Or jumping on any kind of band wagon.

It has everything to do with exactly what I have already stated. The abuse that gets thrown at people, just like you have done with me in this post.

Need I say more?

Don`t sweat this stuff to much Rook.

Obviously I misinterpreted your intentions, and I apologize for that.

Not everybody has his best day at any time, and that is something you should take into your count, if arguing about "behaviour".

Propably you need a thicker skin, but anyway, we mostly have a lot of fun here, and we respect each other, despite all those rhetoric battles that look so cruel from outside.

Have a nice day Rook!

First of all, welcome KSS_Rook_UK. It's good to see experienced flight simmers coming to my favorite (and almost only) forum.

I won't offer any points on your topic but like to be informative...

KSS_Rook_UK wrote:
- Doesn't using a 'hottest' topic for an example

http://smac.ucsd.edu/cgi-bin/http_webster?troll&method=exact
From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) (web1913)
Troll \Troll\, v. i. 1. To roll; to run about; to move around; as, to troll in a coach and six.
2. To move rapidly; to wag. --F. Beaumont.

3. To take part in trolling a song.

4. To fish with a rod whose line runs on a reel; also, to fish by drawing the hook through the water.

Their young men . . . trolled along the brooks that abounded in fish. --Bancroft.

It is not the first sense, of which I suppose you were thinking, that is meant, nor does it have to do with the trolls of folklore. It's the fourth sense which is meant:

From Jargon File (4.3.0, 30 APR 2001) (jargon)
troll v.,n. 1. [From the Usenet group alt.folklore.urban] To utter a posting on {Usenet} designed to attract predictable responses or {flame}s; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase "trolling for {newbie}s" which in turn comes from mainstream "trolling", a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it. See also {YHBT}.

From Jargon File (4.3.0, 30 APR 2001) (jargon)
YHBT // [Usenet: very common] Abbreviation: You Have Been Trolled (see {troll}, sense 1). Especially used in "YHBT. YHL. HAND.", which is widely understood to expand to "You Have Been Trolled. You Have Lost. Have A Nice Day". You are quite likely to see this if you respond incautiously to a flame-provoking post that was obviously floated as sucker bait.

Wonderful, this Internet thingy we have created for ourselves.

Mike

I agree with Ven on this that there are too many 'demands' from people in ORR.

I agree with changes but there are certain people (not naming names) who point fingers and say 'You must do this'. Where frankly if I was a developer I could say 'we'll take our money and run thanks'.

This is not the case with 1C and treat people with respect and you will get respect back.

This thread is rating very high in one of the dumbest things I have ever read on this board.

I've read all this stuff for over 18 months and if you think its bad now - guess what?
It was worse at one time.
It was also better.
It will get worse.
And it will get better.
It will be quite entertaining one day and damned boring the next.
It evolves........constantly!
Its an internet forum with people from all over the world.
That means its going to be totally whacked out for indefinite periods of time. Just like the earth.

And if raw oysters make you sick.....dont freakin eat them!

That's like saying you better not question or criticize the government, or they might come lock you up. Or stop sending your pension check.

If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

As many of us have seen firsthand in other sims and life in general, when you fail to act or pay attention is when one day you're left wondering where and when did everything go wrong.

As for the immaturity of some, I think we can all agree this is unnecessary. And it exists on both sides of the debate.

I had scanned some covers from my original collection of 2 of the ZX81's Flight simulators but the site I put them on closed my free account. I did want to share them with you seeing as you must have had one of them. Or maybe you had another I hadn't hear off. I wonder what the frame rate was in reality? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif I've been meaning to scan all the games I still hold. Seawolf, Mazogs, 3d monster maze, Fortyniner (Hi-rez) 27 cassettes in total, all 16kb, some games 1k ,

I'll Poke and Peek around for them soon.

great point sir.....remember you're dealing with alot of childeren in here and maybe and i stress maybe, there are people here who have flown some of the real birds of WWII. most people just make speculations and really bad assumptions to how a certain aircraft flies according to the CFS's 1,2,3 or what have you, that they own or have played in their lives, which are just games....LOL. isnt it amazing how some get so worked up over a GAME?....its funny that you mentioned all this, one day i had some friends of mine over at my house and i was talking about how silly it gets in here so they wanted to see for themselves what i was talking about so i logged on and showed them some of the flame wars that go on over this GAME and they fell out with laughter on how serious some people take this and to what levels they go to, to make a point. so at the same time it might be disheartening its also entertaining to some. gooday sir.....8)

Fun is a serious business! Of *course* people are passionate about their fun. It's actually gotten to the point where the availability of broadband will be a consideration for me when we next move house.

Incidentally, KSS_ROOK_UK, your post is lucid and heartfelt and I don't think you will see many people disagreeing with you in principle. The problem is that principles can often be hellishly hard to live up to. Speaking personally, I can live with the IBTLs (I actually perversely enjoy them myself) and other humourous spam, as long as people don't start with the ad hominem attacks. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm active in a few debating fora and even in the most dry and worthy of subjects the injection of a little humour is invariably welcomed, and spam can be safely and easily ignored by the main debaters. Where the problem arises is when people start to confuse their disagreement over the point of discussion with a disagreement as to the marital status of the opponent's parents at the time of his or her conception.

I have frequently felt my gorge rise while trawling the GD, I've even been RBJ'd (and boy did I feel a fool after that happened)! To sum up, I am no angel myself, but I'm trying.

Sorry Hellcat, but I have to say that I disagree with you.

Many have commented in various recent threads, both here and in ORR about the same concerns, does that make everyone who voice their disdain for abusive posts 'dumb' - I don't think so. I suppose I could have said nothing, I could have remained silent and ignored the prattle that I see, but I feel that if we were all to do that, then we might as well let the forums be flushed down the toilet and be of no use to anyone.

As far as the 'if you don't like it, don't eat it' comment, If you see something that you feel is getting out of hand, do you ignore it, or do something to redress the escalation. Personally I choose the latter, I value these forums for the useful information, tech tips, game tips etc, so I raised the concern, and so have others. I for one don't wish to 'ignore' the tone of some posts and stay away, and I don't think it's too much to ask people to be a little more thoughtful about their posts, being civil doesn't cost anyone anything, except perhaps a little fore thought.

If I didn't like raw oyster, no I wouldn't eat it, but if I did like it, and it was rotten, I still wouldn't eat it. But I would do something to reduce the chance of getting another rotten one: wouldn't you?

KSS_Rook....

I think you're taking this a bit too seriously or are expecting too much. When someone asks a legitimate question or offers up some useful info it will be answered or digested with gratitude respectively. You may have to skip over some surreal stuff, funny stuff and nasty stuff to get there but you will find what your looking for. Do you read every single section of a newspaper or just the bits that interest you and skip the pap ? Same here.

I'm all for bantor etc, I'm not advacating that everyone mind their P's & Q's either, But seeing posts with continual personal attacks does hack me off somewhat, especially when they're insulting to the game developers etc when they can't get the toys their demanding now. So I pass comment, no harm in that. I have to at least scan past the 'pap' to get to what interests me, I also enjoy the bantor too, except when it turns to aggresive insults, I'm just saying...

S'funny, despite all the mudslinging and trolling, this forum is still a shining beacon of highbrow intellectuallism compared to some of the contributions on the Lock On forum (which their respective devs also frequent from time to time).

I'm not sure whether the average age of prop fanatics is ten years higher than that of your average jilted F22 fanboy, but there's quite a distinction in quality of post and general manners!

KSS Rook UK has summed up my attitute about IL2/FB and this board exactly. This is a place to discuss historical aircraft in the game, ask questions about play, and make helpful suggestions. I don't mind long streams focusing a legitimate argument about flight/damage modelling or historical intrepretation, but it seems to be taken over by people who believe insulting jabs and cute graphics is a substitute for reasoned discussion. I'm also tired of hearing the incessant complaints about the game itself. I'm sorry if some folks can't get it to run the way they'd like on their computers, but that is in fact a risk we all take when purchasing a PC game. In my experience the IC Maddox games are much better in this regard than their Microsoft competitors.
