BERLIN (Reuters) - A German brewer has concocted what he says is the world's strongest beer, a potent drink with an alcohol content of 25.4 percent that is served in a shot glass.

"Everyone who has tried it is enthusiastic. It tastes like a quirky mixture of beer and sherry," said Bavarian brewer Harald Schneider.

Schneider, who lives in southern Germany where beer is a tradition, said his beer fermented for 12 weeks for an alcohol content twice that of Germany's other strongest beers.

"People will only be able to drink two or three glasses, otherwise they'll drop like flies," he said.

Schneider expects the holders of the world's strongest beer, the Boston Beer Company, to put up a fight.

"I'm pretty sure the Americans have something up their sleeve."

Wow, I don't think I'd want to drink this. I'm guessing it must taste awful. 5 - 7% is the good taste range IMHO.

Let moderation be our byword here.
There's something terribly wrong with a society that elevates characters like Frank Gallagher to hero status.

That really sounds disgusting http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/354.gif , beer should taste beer not alcohol, i dont buy or drink beer that is over 5.2 percent, over that and it only tastes alcohol, you should enjoy your beer

Apologies, I chose a character from a British T.V. show - perpetually drunk, foul-mouthed and falling over a lot. Not exactly the kind of chap you'd like living next door to you. He has, however, attained a cult following over here, thanks to the actor's (David Threlfall, I think) truly believeable performances as he battles against the system.

I'm a little fuzzy today - fully aware of the effects of too much beer. I took a decision to leave my Frank Gallagher lifestyle behind me in February and I'm angry at myself for having a few too many last night.

I repeat, let moderation be our byword.

That's too strong for beer.

I believe the strongest brew I've had was in the form of a Belgian brand named Bush. One variety is 12% and it wasn't too bad. But I think it was the alcohol that made it taste better in that instance as most of the Belgian beers I've had are rather nasty tasting.

IMO, beer is ok up to 8% then it ceases to be what I would call beer. And that's from someone who drinks across the range from stout through porters and hoppier. lighter fare.

If it tastes like sherry, it should be bottled as sherry http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Thats a bottle, not a can. Perhaps if you were to drink less and pay attention more, you would notice that.

I wouldn't want to drink more than 2 or 3 of them, if they get served in Litre beer glasses which is the German way! It would be like drinking 4 or 5 bottles of wine.

In the area I hang out in (Franken) the beer is usually about 6 to 7% and it's normally served in .5% glasses. The choices are .3, .5, and 1 liter glasses. The .3 liter glasses are dust collectors.

When I go out with my buddies, we usually drink about 4 to 5 liters each, so I guess that's about 8 liters of Coors. To add, between beers we drink shots of J├┬Ągermeister, Kirschwasser, and Absinth, so add another case of Coors.

Nicest thing is that I don't get hangovers the next day. The beer is natural as it comes from local brewers. They either don't use as much chemicals as the big brewers or they don't use it at all.

My buddy owns a cafe and in Germany cafes are usually pubs at night. On Thursday nights, his busiest, if he has a 100 customers he'll use 350 liters of beer. Considering that not every one drinks beer, that's a lot per person.

So, I'd say the beer drinkers in Franken are not lightweight drinkers. They have the beer-bellies to prove it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

BTW, one of my favorite watering holes in the world is in Munich. It's called Augustine Halle if IIRC. It's very cool and conveniently in the Marktplatz. If you go to Munich it's a must see. Very traditional and very old.

Maybe I have photos. I check.

whats the current world-reigning 'strongest beer' that the BostonBeerCompany has?? anyone know what its called?

ford, the europeans dont even understand our whole 'real men get drunker' culture we have here in the states. in Ireland, where they make irish whiskey, they dont even use shot glasses. thats a Wild-West-Gunslinger thing if you ask them.
