View Full Version : .50 BMG sound?

After having recently fired a Quad .50 at the Knobcreek machine gun shoot, I have to say the .50 cal sound in FB is more than just a tad understated...IMHO

Does anyone else, whose actually heard four to eight .50 BMGs shattering the air, think the .50s in FB sound anything close to real?

QUAD .50 = /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

No, they don't sound even a bit close, but I don't think my puny 5.1 system can do it even if the software can. LOL

Joking aside, I usually use openGL and decided to try Direct to see if it would help with FR games. I think it doesn't make much difference, anyway, without stopping the QMB, I switched back to open GL and when I resumed the game, Good Grief, the Jugs' fifties had went down a few octaves and assumed a very deep bass sound to them. Turning the bass up, I actually "felt" the war drum boom boom boom of them. I was a pretty happy camper. When I started to play the game again, it was gone. Going through the open GL to Direct and back to Open GL had no effect this time.

Does anyone know what happened and how I can reproduce it?

Yeah - I thought they'd have a more like ringing sound - you know - like the 20mms - sort of: "TINKA-TINKA-TINKA-TINKA!"
- right?

I've actually heard that many .50s at one time. In fact, I've heard many more than that at one time. Nothing a computer can do can quite duplicate that melodious sound.

Maybe a computer can't exactly duplicate the sound, but the FB .50s are so fake and cheap-sounding that it really takes something away from the game.

That's my point...the eight .50s on the Jug don't even sound as thunderous as a Quad-50.

Think about the fact that there are four .50s on the P-39 and how wimpy THAT sounds...

When eight .50s let loose on a Jug...you shouldn't be able to hear yourself think! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Not only does the sound suck a bit but they really need to make the tracers more visible.

why worry about sound of the ma deuce x 6 or 8 when the flash is the real problem ? 1700hp just in front of you and in cockpit,iv been around lots of m2 may be 8 at time but much further apart the airplanes..reduce flash =better fps and more real... my only glaring thing i have with fb......

I'll be flammed for this, but .50's sound in CFS2 is very real.nd what is more important,do this test: while in cfs2 fire few rounds whil in the cockpit.OMG,that metallic sound that makes every japanese samurai to wet his flight suit.Maybe they should buy thatsound. Now,fire whil you are in external view.Notice how the sound is changed? Do the same in FB.Except volume nothing is changed. How do i suppose to scare da sheit outta new kamikze zero jockeys when my fifties sounds like youre peeing in the airport toilet?
PS:I love that new cockpit psd layer. It will be probably nicer if the lights on the cockpit will actually do some light over my instruments.nd why should I stare at my "instrument" if I want to see how much fuel I have?

Actually, I agree. The .05 sounds in CFS 2 (and I guess CFS 3 as well as it uses the same sounds) is really very good. It sounds really good on external views where the FB sound is a little odd.

I also agree with you,

Among with the things that annoy me in FB ( muzzle flashes, gun efficiency ) the sound of the guns is just too weird

- the .50s sound like if u were shaking a box full of tiny paper balls,

- the Mk108 sound like those little gunpowder sticks wrapped with paper taht u light and wait it to exp-lode ( dont know the name of this thing in english )

- the light russian MGs sound like a shower wide open, the german MG is just bad I cant even describe.

Ive never heard any of theseguns in real life, but some of them really dont sound like guns.

Some said it might be cuz of the engine, but u hear the same sound with the engine turned off.

And yes, CFS 2 guns have a much cooler sound.

The .50s aren't even within a "light year" of sounding like the real ones.

Zayets i just copied my old cfs2 with 1000+ addon planes into my new comp from my old stoneage one, I spent about 30 min listening to all the sounds radio commands flak and gun sounds wow do they sound 100 times better. Fly cfs2 again I think fms are tougher to fly unedited of course then fb which is kinda scarey,

Spit,
I have both on my hdd,cfs2 for carrier landings ,mission editor , sounds etc and fb for "close to real" FM's.
what pis ses me off in cfs2 is tha if the enemy reach your six then it stays there like hes glued or something. But the rest is good. I play cfs2 with all thousand addons, effects and so on,everything maxed 1600x1200 boy, this ocean! But everytime I comee back to fb,the Jug is much better here.I will like to have Janes ww2,but cnnot find the game, nowhere and i'm sad about it.

Well no not really when indoors at a shooting range 2-3 rounds will have ur ears hurting, we dont use sub sonic ammo so its pretty loud, if u fire these thigns enough without protection you feel it in the long run, hell i know a guy whos hearing is f**ked at 20 sumthing because of loud music.

IMHO, the Browning .50cal M-2 Heavy Barrol machine gun shounds like a drum.
I can't see why most video game developers can't just go out and get a decent recourding.
My best guese is the technology limits what you can do with sound reproduction in video games.
But thats just a guess.

Nah!They are just too lazy.Tell you what, why not make the sounds open as they did with the voice packs? Then I will put the CORRECT SOUND for every darn weapon, crate.I can add even the wind sounds and stuffs like.C'mon boyz, you screwed it big time with the sounds in FB (BTW,IL2 original sounds were WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY BETTER),do some justice now and open that sound for us.Until somebody will crack the code , make FB the game of choice and nobody will want to buy your next BoB.Is not hard, all it need is just a bit of will.If you don't then I will not talk with you anymore.

PS:anyone dare to crack the il2fb.exe?

I agree , the sound problems in this game are because of choice or priority or bad design, not because of a limitation of technology. I have much older games in which the sound is much better.

I know people who use ear protection in competitive airgun shooting. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Impulse noise is very harmful to ears.

Maddox games seriously needs to step it up a notch in the sound department.. it's really lacking. Authenticism is what we're looking for, right? Well sound is part of that too.. and a big part in my opinion.
