View Full Version : optimal gun convergence on spit for 109/190s?

since the Spit doesn't have adjusting of the aiming recticle like later US planes have (both distance/type), I was wondering if someone could tell me at what distance a 109's wingtips fill my aiming circle - that way i can set up the convergence to that distance, and know that when he fills the circle with his wingtips, he is precisely at convergence distance (correct?)...

I think this short video may answer all your questions; gunnery and convergence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpnJeM3wjew)

I like that very much. That's one of the most practical helps that I've seen anywhere.

Thank you for link.

Here is some fantastic stuff in written form as well:

Gunnery (http://ww2airfronts.org/Flight%20School/transition/weaponsschool/gunnery.html)

Here is a .pdf from that site that is a gunnery manual from RAF 1943. I found it very helpful, but couldn't find the link on their site:

After seeing Dart's video on the subject and reading "The Blonde Knight of Germany" about Erich Hartmann, I went from a convergence of 300m to one of 150m and the hit and run techniques described by Hartmann. Now I hit everything I shoot at in the air. Most importantly, I get more kills quicker now too.

Check out http://www.darts-page.com/ , there's some good stuff on there. Some educational, some just entertaining. Love the dry humor.

(Not OT, this is the IL-2 related homepage of the guy who made the gunnery and convergence video...)

It just so happens that one of our pilots came across it. Dart's got some great videos on his page, all the credit goes to him.

I use 200m for machineguns and 120m for cannons. That's actually for every plane that has a pair of cannons far out on the wings backed up with some MGs. I fire cannons only at ranges below 150m and rarely fire all guns together. These settings work like a charm for me.
