Well I'm off to the UK on Friday... Any interesting place/museums/pubshttp://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif in London, central.
It's only a short visit, 1 week. I was hoping to go to Germany as well, but that didn't work out http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Not sure about the pubs as I don't live in that fair city. But there are too many museums to mention here, not sure what your interests are though, so I have listed some sites that have a military feel, keeping with the subject involved on this forum.

The Imperial War Museum is worth a look, not been in a few years though but it was very good then. Are you staying only in London? Becuase it maybe worth looking at Bletchley Park (where the enigma was broken). The Science Museum in London is pretty cool, htn there is the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London - I believe the Cutty Sark is there too.

Celeon could visit the UK almost every weekend now that the price battle between those super cheap airlines (Ryan Air and so on) has reached its peak but he has no time http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Breakfast in Berlin, lunch in London, dinner in Paris would be possible. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

At least with the temperatures here in Europe and especially over there on (da´isle http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif ) you will feel like beeing home. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

KF,

If you could take a train up to Duxford, it is well worth the day trip. More WWII aircraft than you could shake your banned stick at! You might even find a FW-190 up there!

Duxford (http://duxford.iwm.org.uk/)

Also, another daytrip could be down to the Royal Navy Musuem at Portsmouth...

Royal Naval Museum (http://www.royalnavalmuseum.org/)

Although, there are no real battleships at this museum.

I know you said Central London, but if you get a chance, try the Bovington Tank Museum.

Okay, the one before Celeon's Post - darn it Celeon - you were too quick for me!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Public transport in the UK is not what it's cracked up to be. Trains are overcrowded during peak times and can be very expensive when going out of London. Going by road can be a nightmare sometimes - Duxford is ideal by road as it's not far from London!

Although there are some excellent reccomendations - Alex is right, stay in London!

@ Celeon - I think you would like the Tank Museum at Bovington as there are some nice German tanks there!

I remember during my TA days I visited the Military Academy in Shrivenham where they have a private collection of several notable tanks through the last 80 years, including a King Tiger and a T34!! Man, that Tiger is a beast of a tank http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Did anyone mention HMS Belfast? moored on the Thames in London (Big wet river running thru London, you won't miss it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

HMS Belfast served throughout the Second World War, playing a leading part in the destruction of the battle cruiser Scharnhorst, and also the Normandy Landings. In service with the Royal Navy until 1965, she was saved for the nation in 1971 as a unique reminder of Britain€s naval heritage.

I went as a youngster, and you can climb and peek around all the decks and bits and bobs - I loved it.

*This is no hijack attempt !* http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Sadly they never finished one of these ww-1 k-wagons here.

Look how tiny the Tiger is compared to this steel monster http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

A friend of mine visited a war museum in London a few months ago. He said that they have a V-2 there but had to cut off its nose or it would´nt had fit into the hall. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I will see if i can find the pics he made.

For this K-wagon monster they would propably have to build a complete new hall. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I had a "buddy" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif who was into this stuff...you would not believe how anal (picky) they get about wearing the right badges, acting the right way...etc...It's like an exclusive and snobby boys club where those who have the more accurate (and expensive) gear wins. He used to come to work and show me pictures of his weekend outings with the boys...*yawn*... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sleepzzz.gif

...Funny, he never had a steady girlfriend, lived with his mom and was 43 years old???? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Ernst R¶hm http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

He also liked to spend much time in the wilderness.....wearing uniforms...together with all the boys.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

He probably wasn't that way...he was just so OBSESSED with the reenacting stuff that he had no interest otherwise!!! And that it took up all his weekend time made him a very dull boy!

Ersnt Rohm ... wasn't he killed in bed with one of his 'boys'??

but more on topic...Other Great military history musuems that The_Silent_O has visited:

- The Airborne Museum at Groesbeek, NL
- Verdun, FR
- German Military Museum, Dresden, GE
- skipped the military museum in Paris,...not much there anyway http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif
- The Science Musuem in Munich has some WWII aircraft

Nope. He was shot in a prison cell by Sepp Dietrich and a second man i forgot the name of after refusing to commit suicide.

But Hitler himself found him in bed with one of his good looking SA boys before he was taken there. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for the info guys.
As the wheels touch-down I'm on the train to Farnborough... Just heard that it's on this week-end http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

If you mean the Farnborough Airshow - you're in for a treat. It's fantastic. I was lucky to go many years ago on a corporate freebie with my Father while he did business there.

The SR-71 Blackbird took off to return to the States, the commentator said the runway was just a bit short so they had to give it everything they had to reach lift off speed - the noise shook every organ in body! I also recall the Saab Viggens actually scaring me they were so loud coming in for a low sweep over the airfield. Plus I got loads of freebie stickers and key rings 'cos we were in corporate hospitality and I was a buyers young son!

Fellow Kaleun I implore you, take your camera and post up the pics!

maybe you should re read some your military history..except for some highly publicized battles ( crecy , agincourt , poitiers , blenheim ,waterloo) the score in winning battles between you brits and the french is about equal..and by the way the english lost the 100 year war , the bourbon king was still rulling spain after the spanish succesion war , the seven year war or also known as the wilderness war would eventually lead to the brits loosing north america 20 years later, the same day trafalgar was fought the austrian army at Ulm surrendered which would eventually leads to the battle of austerlitz 2 months later and the end and defeat of the third coalition( william pitt the younger died a month afterwards a broken man) waterloo was such a close run thing , ask any tabletop wargammer and he will tell you winning waterloo playing the allies versus a able player is near impossible.

No pun intended and with all respect but french military history is not one of defeats alone
