it varied

In general, two planes formed a pair, or 'element' in the USAAC/USAAF- the basic tactical group by war's end, a mutually dfensive pair of aircraft

Two elements formed a flight of 4 planes

Four flights could make a squadron of 16 planes

from there, it could go to Wing or Group, then Airforce within the USAAC/USAAF

So for instance you could have a unit called the 361st squadron of the 375th group, 8th Air Force or somesuch

Not to be picky http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif, but isn't it Kette for WWI - or 3 or more a/c - but Rotte for WWII and exactly 2 a/c.

Jagdflieger (fighter) - Rotte - and Kampfflieger (bomber/attacker) - Kette -differing as well.

okay old tread but recently i found a need to know some more.

no reason to put up a new tread.

im talking german airforce here

if i get it correckt theres 4 squadrons (64 planes) in a Grupper and 4 gruppe to a JG (jeager geschwader)

or what?
the thing is that when making bit amount of planes id like to know when to change Grupper in a JG for example

P.S. "airforce" is really two words.

USN
2 planes=section
2 sections=division
X# of divisions=VF (fighting), VT (torpedo), or VB (bombing) squadron. Amount of divisions in each varied throughout the war. Late in the war large carriers had more fighters and fewer bombers, with VF's getting so large that some were split into a VF and a VBF.

VF+VT+VB=Carrier Air Group
