Man, I look forward to this one! The visual artists are really doing great work, you can see they have their hearts in this! I particularly like the little touch of the clothesline with soldier’s shirts on:

As i've been quite excited about this project since first hearing about this...I noticed that the website logo titles this as An Online War Project does this mean that it is to be an online only expansion...
I hadn't heard anything about this before...

As an online only expansion it will
a) be of absolutely no interest to the overwhelming majority of FB/AEP/PF players (95% + who never play online I believe) and
b) If this is to be a payware add-on how are they expecting to make any money...What kind of audience can they realistically expect for this?

I have to be honest i was gutted to read this as I had been really looking forward to this one...
I hope both for my own sake and for the sake of the Maddox Games (I know this isnt developed by Maddox anyway...)...that this isn't the route they are going to move more and more towards in the future...
Selfishly...because it means that I won't be able to play future releases if they become online only...and from their side of the fence...because it a quick way to commercial suicide!

From the website front page:

Gennadich Team has officially announced starting a new PC simulation project with working title 'WWI: Knights of the Sky". The game's plot is based on historical standoff between Antanta and Germany on Belgium-France border back in 1916-1918. During this period, dubbed the dawn of airforce, combat aviation was born and first aces earned fame in daring dogfights. On territory 100 000 sqaure miles wide, players will be able to take part in famous battles at Ipres, Malmeson, Cambri, as well as Liese river operation and Verden 'meat mincer'. Users will be given an opportunity to fly 13 legendary airplanes including Fokker Dr.1, Nieuport 17/17bis/23, SPAD XIII, Albatros D.III, Gotha G.V, SopwithCamel, R.E.8. AI-controlled units will nsist of 30 NPC aircraft and some 60 types of ground units. The game will contain both single and multiplayer (LAN/Internet) modes as well as historically realistic campaigns for both sides and user-friendly training missions. At the core, the game is based on the deep modification of Maddox Games' Il2-Sturmovik engine to which the team is planning to add thousands of new features. These changes will include new 3d models, terrain, video and sound effects, light/gunnery physics adjustments and many other things that will bring the game to modern standard. The project is currently scheduled to be released by Fall 2006 (Russian publisher is 1C).

I wouldn't say that, Sure it was good but very difficult to fly in comparison with many other fighters... it was so difficult to fly that more men lost their lives while learning to fly it than using it in combat...it was a revolutionary machine in a number of respects. The plane's Twin Vickers machine guns were mounted side by side in front of the cockpit -- a first for British fighters and a design feature that became standard on British fighters for nearly 20 years.

The elevators were powerful, and combining the strong torque from the engine along with the fact that the main mass of the pilot, fuel, and the engine were all within a distance of 7 feet made the machine very tricky to fly. Without appropriate rudder the nose would rise in a left-turn and fall in a right-turn. Either way, without rudder a spin would be generated. At full throttle the machine was noticeably tail heavy. Hence it was a very demanding aircraft to fly.

If made correctly, rudder-user is this game will be more important than ever... a lot more important than in IL2...

It is all up the Gennadich how "real" they want this to be.... we really don't know this yet. Will it be a "sim" like IL2, or will it be more arcadish???

To be honest I am kind of nervous... I am really looking forward to this much more than BoB (or whatever it's name will be)... The sim community really needs a great WWI sim, maybe the Russians will give it to us just as they gave us the great (only in my book) WWII sim.

But I am afraid to keep my hopes up regarding thee actual game/sim play. I so much do not want to be dissappointed....

An agile, highly maneuverable biplane, the Sopwith Camel accounted for more aerial victories than any other Allied aircraft during World War I. Credited with destroying 1,294 enemy aircraft, it was called the Camel due to the humped fairing over its twin machine guns. Much like a real camel, this aircraft could turn and bite you. Noted for its tendency to kill inexperienced flyers, many pilots feared its vicious spin characteristics. Until sufficient speed was developed during takeoff, Camel pilots maintained full right rudder to counteract the torque the rotary engine. Failure to do so often resulted in a ground loop with the Camel crashing on its starboard wingtip. During World War I, 413 pilots died in combat and 385 pilots died from non-combat related causes while flying the Sopwith Camel. Ouch!

RB II the game that got me hooked on flight sims. The models on "Knights of the Sky" look absolutely awesome, lets hope the game play is up to the quality graphics.

I wonder if they'll do any earlier war stuff at a later date? I was always partial to the DH-2, the plane that ended the "Eindecker Scourge". Until then I'll be content flying the Sopwith Tripe.

Hey allhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
One thing to note - our project is not addon for IL2 series - its a stand alone product with alot of changes in it.
So to answer on previous question - it will have both single and online modes in it.

On how real this simulation will be, I guess we must keep in mind that Gennadich keeps up a fairly realistic server or two for FB, and the aforementioned ADW project (worth a click on the banner) is self-explanatory on that regard I think...

I hope it is an intensive sim. Have been playing OVER FLANDERS FIELDS quite a bit and am increasingly disenchanted with it. For one thing, Mr Camel is quite a gentleman compared to the real item, and, when playing the AI, you can shoot him full of holes and even set him afire and he will not go down. Third Wire has another WWI flight sim on the horizon for fall (see their forums). All this is doubtlessly stimulated by the film FLYBOYS about the U.S. Lafayette Escadrille due out in October of this year---a 60 million film.

As far as i can gather from my periodic rumage through SIM HQ there is no def. date yet, development being what it is. Just that it is much sooner than BOB...maybe the end of this year? the beginning of next? something like that i think. All i really know is I wanna SE5a too!

Yeah, not the best in terms of Manoeuvrability but a good solid gun platform that didn't bite its pilots like the camel. Good for legging it if things get too hot too, so my kinda ride!

That's what I thought of when seeing the title.

Played it on the old Amiga, very good game.

Challenges from enemy aces, bomber escorts, aerodrome attacks, ballon busting etc.

The only daft thing was the bright red/blue pill boxes on the frontline. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I'm a little confused with where this game is going.

Initially it was aimed at the Eastern front of WWI. But it seems that in the past few months all the updates have been on the western front?

Are they still planning on covering the Eastern? Aerial combat was muchhh more limited there compared to the west for many reasons, so covering both isn't to big of a task compared to say WWII but I hope its still included, both historical and non.

Historically air combat didn't reallly pick up until just before the Americans showed up in Nov. 1917 leading into the German Spring Offensives of 1918. Combat before that point was scattered and in consisitent at best, mostly due to the limitations of aircraft. I think were going to see this problem in game in the historical missions since aircraft often flew alone and dedicated ground attack aircraft were non-existent.

Anyways thats my two cents hopefully we see both fronts, maybe even Gallipoli (I'll cross some fingers)?
