I found this video today and I think it's very interesting, makes you wonder what feelings must overwhelm the man to see big bomber in front of him again after all this years. And nice expanaition of the nightfighter tactics.

Hope you like.

The night fighter war between the British and the Germans is a fascinating subject. I hope oleg eventually puts it into his SOW series.

Sure it's very fascinating, would be really neat to sit in a cockpit of a Ju-88 and listen to the radar guy and looking in the dark, trying to spot anything, ah, some day... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sleepzzz.gif

great clip, thanks for posting!

rumors had it we could see nightfighter inclusive working radar in one of the next official IL2 updates by team daedalus. No idea if that is still up, but that could give the sim a whole new dimension.

There are so many facets to this night time combat as it progressed during the war it would make a terrific SOW series all by itself IMO. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Well, maybe. I'd suspect it was more about not hitting the bomb bay and getting blown to pieces, and having less chance of the whole thing coming down on top of you.

It's better than that. Viikate posted some screenshots on AAA...they were so dark you couldn't see anything very well. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif So either Viikate is a terrible tease, or they've altered the lighting at night so it's actually dark.

Unfortunately any night fighter mission in current game is just really day fighter mission in slightly darker environment. Real night fighting is whole different ball game.

I recall that Peter Spoden wrote in his book that when he had to bail out and got stuck to tree from his parachute, he had to wait until morning before jumping down from. Peter could not see how high he was so he just didn't dare to cut himself loose. At morning he realized that he was about one meter above ground.

In the game we can see runways and other details clearly from miles away. This is obviously done for playability reasons. MG boys could have easily made dark nights, but then playability would suffer without any navigational aids & radars. Even landings are pretty much impossible in dark.

Imagine landing to this runway which is almost visible at the bottom left corner.

Not going to happen without help from Mr. Lorenz.

Where I have lived, most nights I can see well enough to go through woods without need of a light. I learned
to do that camping. If the moon is up it takes heavy clouds to reduce vision so bad a light is a must. Clear
sky and a full moon, I could almost read and we did play football a time or two. Of course we did not wear
black clothes on black background to play mind you.
When your eyes are adjusted to stargazing, look around you as well. Just because it's night doesn't mean you
can't see 5 meters or even 2.

Online in DF. AI see the same day or night, already have the radar.

There was no moon light in that pic. Little moon light of course helps a lot. Even with full moon, the current night is too bright. No need to have any sort of AI or ground radars.

AI vision is affected also. It wouldn't make any sense otherwise.

Another problem with the nights in game is that the brightness of the screens environment can vary a lot. Try playing a night mission with the current brightness while you have the sun shining into your room, and try the same thing during a dark night with all lights off in your room. It's a difference like night and day. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

In the video the man says with the moon you could see the target at 800m, without, 200m. I've been out in the pitch
black, no moon with clouds and trees in summer and sure it's hard to see and judge distances on the ground then.
In IL2 I have trouble finding the grass strips even in daytime. If they have AA or vehicles it does become easier.

Last time I flew IL2 night the AI had no trouble finding me at all. Maybe that changed but I've never seen any notice
of it. Before it was due to hardware limits.

I believe he is referring to the AI's vision with the alterations made in the latest unreleased work done by Daidalos Team, not in 4.09.

Herr Spoden has written an exelent book regarding his experiences in the war "Enemy In The Dark. The story of a Nighter-Fighter pilot"

This is a very well written book which I'm sure all people that are interested in the airwar over Europe would enjoy. See Peter Spoden's website:

Peter Spoden is also the subject of a chapter in this book.

Definitely. DT have been doing more for this sim in the last few months than I ever dared to imagine when 4.09 final was announced. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

They have the functions of the basic system to use and newer machines to run the extra bits.

They're also more focused on improving the more neglected areas of the sim, and that's why I approve so much.
