View Full Version : Question about HL 'red bars'...

Does anyone know why, everytime I host a mission in HL, the bars are red... it means either timeout or lots of lag according to HL online manual. but people who have joined say there's no lag and all works well. Then why are they red?
With red bars few people will join I'm afraid.

I've got decent cable internet connection and windows firewall turned off. What oh what could it be?

The HL "bars" work using ICMP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Control_Message_Protocol) PING command/response, the process aping (launched by HL) does that. If you have "respond to ICMP" or something similar switched off in your router (most common default setting), PING won't work and you'll be showing up all red bars.

Hope this helps.

I have direct cable internet though, no router. Can I change any settings in this case too?

Thx for the reply so far.

My guess is ICMP is disabled deeper in the network i.e. ICMP requests are not forwarded to you from your cable company (most likely std. procedure), you'll have to get in touch with the company if you want it opened up.

Check also your computer settings (network) to see if ICMP might be disabled there. ICMP and echo are the keywords to look for.

Hope this helps.

If your Windows Firewall is ON, you will show RED bars. However, you should have no problems hosting.
