After I've seen the propaganda movie "Know your enemy: Japan" on youtube, I thought movies from the "Why We Fight" series might be available at Google Video. Well, turns out many parts are uploaded there ("Prelude to War", "Divide and Conquer") etc.

While watching the 7th and final part of the series, "War comes to America", I noticed that the movie included footage - sometime into the 2nd minute - of a P-38 taking off in deep mud, supposedly in the Aleutian Islands. I don't think it shows the seaplane version since that never got beyond the prototype phase:

The footage you describe originated in Report from the Aleutians - which is available to be downloaded in full resolution from here -

Hi

I've seen that movie. Must been very scary for those pilots to take off and land. It must be alot of work for the groundcrew to keep those planes flying.

The 54th Fighter Squadron, operating P-38Es, were deployed to the Aleutian islands in 1942 as part of the 28th Composite Group.

"Of the initial batch of pilots to go into action with the 54th, only 10 survived - the majority lost to bad weather." -- from "P-38 Lightning" by Jeffrey L. Ethell

I read a book called the Thousand Mile WAr which was all about the Aleutians. Great book. Try and find it and be amazed at the conditions these men fought in.

I wonder if excessive rain and mud-covered runways caused many engine malfunctions or not.
