View Full Version : My B17 ride with Bearcat...Movies while in flight :)

As many of you know, Bearcat and I (along with Bearcat Jr) went for a flight in the B17, Yankee Lady, on Sunday morning.
t was an extraordinary experience and I took many photos and movies during the flight and wanted to share them with all of you.
Several people who I know asked me WHERE we flew, to which I told them that it was not about looking at the scenery below, it was about the overwhelming emotion of not just seeing one of these giant birds, but the thrill of flying in one, getting to walk around to the different stations while in flight, and looking out over the Norden bombsight while listening to the thunder of the Wright Cyclones pushing the bomber through the sky.
To be surrounded with all those elements simultaneously is indescribable but I will share with you the movies I have taken and will in some small part give you some idea of what it was like.

I hope that you have enjoyed what I was able to share. Maybe BC will add some photos here and tell of what he thought of the flight.
These are the only movies I have, with some editing, but I had taken several photos as well during the flight. If anyone is looking for a particular photo, just ask and I will see if I have it.

What´s that "firecracker" sound you hear at the end of start up and in the beginning on takeoff?

Sweet Choctaw! (not you the video...http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) I looked through a few, and will continue later. Thanks for sharing these. I can understand what you mean regarding the emotions of flying in a piece of avaition history. I got a few nice video close ups while it was on the tarmac. Later in the day we went to lunch at Malibooz (airport bar/grill) and faced the window. All of a sudden from the right comes in this huge silver bird coming in for a landing. QUITE impressive! Glad you and BC got to take the ride.

If a B-25 was offering rides I think my brother would have splurged for his son to fly in one.

Opporative word for the weekend was HOT. I made it Saturday and had to leave after the Iwo Jima re-enactment. Just to hot to really enjoy much more. We got in as the gates opened to avoid the traffic and heat.

I really liked the Val and Corsairs flying and mocking an attack.

I'll edit the video and post it on line.

I have to give a HUGE ovation for the re-enactors and volunteers. Excellent work to provide some entertainment and history to the fans and history lovers. It was 98 driving back to NJ. I can't imagine what it was like on the tarmac in full soldier gear doing recreations. Even the bus drivers. Many of them looked older and in a school bus w/o AC it must have been a long day.

I'm VERY glad I went.

Wow Man! How did you arrange that ride?

I am jealous as well!

The "pop, pop, pop" sound is what the engines do at idle...It may be hard to tell in the movie, but being there, you would know that is what it was.

For those of you that were there, I wish we could have gotten a chance to spend some time together, but I was only there for Sundays flight.
There aren't that many times each year where we forum members can get together at an event we all enjoy.
Hopefully some time in the near future, several of us can get together.

Very nice! By the way, the room you identify as the navigator room is actually the radio room. The navigator sat behind the bombardier on the left side of the plane, up front. The radio operator was an essential part of the mission. I think the radio room is directly behind the bomb bay, IIRC.

That looked like a E or F model to me. Nice to see some are left, most out there flying are G's.

Nice vids! Reminded me of my ride(s) in the B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" and B-24 "Witchcraft". Take-off and landings were a @#$! to photograph because you have to be "buckled in" (darn it!). Hopefully I'll snag a ride on the Collings foundation B-25 the next time their in town.

What is the ball park cost for a such a ride?

Does the ac have limited flying hours left and then be grounded or do they keep on upgrading to extend the "life" of the AC?

lol this is the same bird that cuased me to lock up all 18 wheels a couple of years ago.
I was comming back into montgomery from Selma on US 80 (which passes by the Airport here.)
and just glanced over to skeeak a peak at the 187th's F-16's, which arent but about 350 yards from the east bound lane and are in plain site.
when i spotted just the top of the nose, cockpit and top turret poking from behind a hanger at the Montgomery Avation Terminal.
i think my reaction was" holy sh*t! a b-17!!
and i locked em down. lol got out climbed up on top and confimed i wasnt seeing things.
soon as i got back to the yard i was clocking out and heading back to the airport. lol
i got to go out on the tarmack and check her out, but the flights were over and no one was there. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif
