Just curious as to what the forum 'values'in an aircraft. Could you please A. Pick ONLY five of your most important features (in order of importance)
B. What plane do you think most closely matches these criteria?
C. What plane do you usually fly?

(I'm curious as to see if what people value in a plane are reflected in their actual choice...)

I don't want to start another 'what's your favourite plane' thread, but rather a 'what do you want your ideal plane to be like'

1A. Speed [high alt]
1B. Speed [low alt]
2. Roll rate
3A. Turning circle/handling [high speed]
3A. Turning circle/handling[low speed]
4. Climb rate
5A. Firepower [cannon]
5B. Firepower [MG/HMG]
6. Air-to-ground ordnance
7. Survivability (how much punishment it can absorb...)
8. Flying 'manners'(Does NOT spin like P39, or lands like 109)
9. Visibility from cockpit
10. It looks cool http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
11. If you have a special specification of your own, please add it in

For my ideal plane, I'd probably pick:
1B low alt speed (most of my fights end up here/chase down ground attack)
5A. plenty of cannons (...and STAY down!)
4. decent rate of climb (I like to 'get it up' when I need to http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
9. Good visibility (that Fw190 cockpit frustrates me... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
8. No nasty flight characteristics (I'm still a novice... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
= a Typhoon/Tempest maybe?
What I fly: Fw190A (because of #10... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Good climb, good armament, fast and manueverable. Favorite plane is either a 109 or a Stuka (violates all of the above criteria http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif)

Cool looks, Firepower, Durability, Low altitude handling ....that's why I fly Cobras and Stormoviks.

The 'vik is so brutal looking it just looks like it can kill you even without ammo, and the Cobra has the best lines in flight (other than the Spitfire) of any plane on the Eastern Front.

I fly mostly online. When picking aircraft I tend to pick with these things in mind:

1. I prefer strike (ground attack) roles where available.
2. How many aircraft of what types and on which side are already flying. It's no fun flying in an unbalanced server.
3. What will challenge my skills (and hopefully extend them).
4. How much time is the mission likely to take and how much time do I have.
5. What's actually available.

I agree with Tully. I'll check the balance then choose accordingly.

Also depends on what mood I'm in.

Number 3's porbably the most important. But turning rate is more important than turning radius IMHO.
Number 1B comes a close second. Speed is life. I pick low alt. because that's where I spend most of the time.
There's another characteristic I consider important and that's the plane's stability as a gun platform. Some planes jerk around quite a bit when you fire the cannons/MGs (e.g. Spits) whilst others are rock steady (e.g. P47)
On the subject of firepower, I like a good mix of cannons and MGs - MGs for deflection shots and cannons to open the bandit up (I'm not that good a shot).

My Minimum Criteria is it has to have more Firepower than the 109F2. That thing has PATHETIC Guns, I'd rather have a Cr.42 Gun-wise.

My Weaponry Pref:
(Ascending Order)
2x HMG( Cr42, G50)
8x .303(Crappy Dispersion)
4x ShKAS(-153, -16, great guns in numbers. SHREDS 109s)
2x 20mm in nose(ShVAKs are great, MG151 inferior)
4x .50s(Buffalo is the best as far as positioning goes, but -51s are better overall)

After that, It doesnt matter, because you have 1-pass kill ability. My favorite overall is the Jug's 8 M2s. At proper range and a little deflection to get the rounds all over him, you have a Gigantic Buzzsaw. I've seen what .50 cal rounds can do, and believe me, the LAST thing I want is to be in front of EIGHT of them. To me, the Jug's .50s are more potent even than the FW190's Cannons. If you don't get a kill in a single pass on anything smaller than a Med Bomber, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong if you hit him.

For v3.03m:

A:Turning circle/handling[low speed], Climb rate, Turning circle/handling [high speed], Firepower [cannon], Visibility from cockpit.

B: Ki-841b or 1c

C: Pretty much any plane, but i try to fly a plane which compares equally to the planes on the other team to keep things fair.

1) Either absolute supremacy in speed or agility. Either way is fine with me.

2) Cockpit layout and visibility. I like a full set of instruments but more importantly I prefer the important stuff up top. Equally important is visibility out of the cockpit.

3) Handling, I only fly planes with some charicter. So things like the Fw-190, Ki-43 and F4F are good, things like the Yak-3 and La's are not my thing.

4) Accurate weapons, they don't need to be powerful as long as I can put the bullets in the engine or cockpit.

5) Range. All the performance and firepower in the world is worthless if you can't fly far enough to use it.

In general I prefer all out planes rather than balanced ones. I want absolute supremacy in 1 or more aspects so that I can apply 1 set of tactics to all opponents rather than having to switch around between them in the middle of a battle. As such, my rides of choice are speed demons such as jets, the F4U, Fw-190 and A6M (early war) or super agile planes such as the J8A, Ki-43 and G.50.

For overall favorite I like the Ki-43-IC best (in early war only). It is not well armed but the telescoping sight makes up for that, the cockpit layout is good, it has excellent climbing ability and is the king of agility in the pacific. Coming in second is the F4U, it is fast and well armed with good cockpit layout and visibility.

I'm an offline player, so competition and survivability isn't that much important. This allows me to select planes by these criteria in the following order (chosen from the initial list):

Cool looks (Nr 10 on Jagdklinges list). Note that the definition of "cool" is highly variable, and can encompass planes like Brewsters, Gladiators, Salamanders and Spitfires alike.

Nice flying characteristics (Nr 8 on Jagdklinges list). I'm a lousy flyer. I prefer planes that won't fall out of the sky whenever I move the stick. This pretty much leave me with the low-end performers, like P-11, Gladiators and the twin engine planes.

(Nr 2 on Jagdklinges list). I'm basically a Turn & Burner by heart. I like agile planes, which will exclude some off the above planes (He 111s for instance).

(Nr 11 on Jagdklinges list). ... and finally, flying offline gives me the opportunity to have a ****-plane bonanza!

I love old, ungainly, under-gunned, wood-and-fabric crappy planes! The late pre-war models are wonders off unclear design with hangovers from biplane technology. There is nothing as soulless as sleek, high-end, glossy all-metal planes. I particularly dislike the P-51, P-47 and later Yaks and LaGGs,. They are not my cup of tea at all, though I must admit some of them are fairly pleasant to fly.

All in all I think my personal favourite must be the Brewster, although it's tricky to get into the air from rough airstrips, and even worse to get down.

5 features....I dunno, It depends on the task ahead.

I do like:
Good visibility,
Good firepower,
Good carrying capacity,
Excellent zoom climb,
Survivability,
and it has to look the parthttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I tend to fly the P47 99% of the time but im quite partial to: P38's, Fw190's (I like the A4 and A6 allot as of last night on warclouds!), 109F4, Sturmo's, P39N1's. I do really want the Tempest V though, it will fit right in with everything I like about a plane (apart from no high alt performance) and it will fit right in with those late war servers.

Wolfmondo summed it up quite nicely..

Manoeverability
Firepower
Visibility
Speed - sometimes, i'm not much of a speedfreak, i prefer to outturn my opponents but sometimes you just need speed to get out of harms way ^^
And a littlebit of goodlooks..
dated by era i'd take:
I-153 as my ultimate Pre1940 Cr@pplane http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
i have no real preferred 1940 ride
'41-42: P40E - oh yes firepower http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
43: LA5fn
44-45: no real preference, p38 is fun, P39 but i suck driving it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif and i love the Yaks, but still never take them, they fly like a dream but have almost no ammo...

Boy do we have it GOOD! I'm looking at the aircraft choices and eaches characteristic an I marvel. WOW!

Just on the cooooooool factor alone we have the

1)P38 (How can you NOT love looking to the right and left and seeing a prop and turbine....)

2) P39 (Sleek, sexy, cool),

3)FW190 (A4 goodness Mmmm)

4)Corsair (Sorry, but I end up singing Black Sheep Squadron)

5)Me 109 (When I BnZ an enemy I ALWAYS say to myself...ala Darth Vadar...."I HAVE YOU NOW")

6)P40 (Teeth...my earliest recollection of the P40 had TEETH, and at 7 that WAS / IS/ and shall ALWAYS be cool...can I get an AMEN!)

Oh.........AND THE **** PLANES......(We'll have FUN FUN FUN till Oleg takes the Keys away!)

As you can tell I have NO method to my madness. I just like the fun aspect. I try to be accurate in my flying skills according to the plane's flight/historical characteristics, but that doesn't always work out. It's only after flying for a while did I learn to take into account any of the above mentioned parameters. I still don't pick a plane because of them... tho I fly more and more in line with them (If that makes sense)
Afterall, (and I DON'T think I'm alone in this) I fly simulators because of a childhood affection of aircraft in general, but specifically WWII aircraft.

Robert

Yellow stains on the windows and brown stains on
the seat. If a plane has this then I know the
previous pilot was very nervous and I won't fly it.
Planes with nervous pilots smell http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Also I look for lots of speed (he162 and me163 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif)
because I turn like ... well not very good

offline it is true, but online, well, it is quite frustating.... 4 high-side passes to kill a BF-110, and usually his friends will come for rescue after I did my third pass http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif.

and shot from dead six against a BF/FW is really useless, 2 seconds of stirke, they just come out semmingly unscratched... (But I got my point anyway when they lamped home http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif)

I can kill a BF/FW in one pass only if they are really slow (for example, get caught on the top of the zoom), which give me plently of time to score, or in an angled (i.e. high angle-off-tail) snap shot, which their engine and cockpit are exposed to my fire.

Well, there aren't too many planes in this game that do not "look cool". To me, anything with wings looks cool. But there is just something about the P-38. There have been times when I wanted to slap Gibbage for some of his comments to me and others in here, but the man is a talented 3D modeller, and he has my undying gratitude for this plane. And the FM, added by Oleg and team, combined with the firepower of this plane make it my all-time favorite. I remember as a little boy, that as the daily t.v. stations went OTA (yes, all you younger peeps, after midnight there was no t.v.) they would show military AC as they played the National Anthem. No plane impressed this little boy any more than the Lightning, and my love for it has never died.

Interesting question.

I'd say (in no order):

1A/B Speed (more medium alt)
3A Turning High Speed
5A Cannon
2 Roll Rate
9 Visibility

I don't know what plane most closely matches those criteria. But I fly the 109 almost exclusively (cannons, decent speed). Or did. Now I fly Pacific campaigns. In that realm, I like the F4C (cannons).

You know, as much as I love the Corsair, in real life I'd hate to fly it in combat situations. How the heck do you see behind you? Mirrors work but still the rearview is limited. The cockpits rear bulkhead really makes finding ..(or in my case avoiding).. the enemy difficult. When you lose sight of enemy you LOSE.

Even if 6DOF was modeled into the sim, it would be a feat to do see very well behind you.

No other fighter plane has such a resricted rear view (at least that I'm aware of)...Those WWII pilots were/are something else.

Robert

LaGG-3 is my current favourite ride. Mostly off-line, that is. I also like the FW 190As.

Lagg-3, here's why:

-it looks cool
-it looks cool
-series 4: lots of nose guns (2x ShKAS, 2x UB, 1x ShVAK) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
-series 29 and 35: Vya-23 cannon option... need I say more? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
-series 66: don't know yet, seems to handle OK.
-did I mention they look cool and CanonUK made some really cool skins for them? (check out his 44 IAP skins, White 11 and White 25)

Why not LaGG-3:
-really bad rear view (like Corsair, and of course, La-5 razorback).
-at 550-580km/h it tends to falls apart.
-sluggish high speed handling.
-awful elevator authority since 3.03
-did I mention it has a really, really bad rear view?
