Thanks to those who responded to my "Joys of flying mediocre planes" post.

An acquaintenance of mine says he knew Eric Hartmann when Hartman was in the West German AF. He also says he knew Hartmann's flight instructor. My acquaintance said Hartmann told him he would come under an IL 2 and shoot out an oil filter on the bottom of the plane. When this was done, the engine would seize in about 7 seconds. Does anyone know if this is in the sim? If it is, where is it on the plane? I have tried this a number of times, but no success. I did shoot an IL2 down with a 109f using only the nose guns when I came in from below. Unfortunately, I did not save the sequence and have no idea where I hit. I think it was near the wing root.

My acquaintence told me an interesting anecdote about Mr. Hartmann as told by Hartmann's flight instructor. It seems when Eric was learning to fly, he was overheard in the shower telling a fellow student if they opened the window they would catch cold and not have to fly that day. He was disciplined for that. I don't know if this is true, but the person who told me this also said he knew Hans Rudel and showed me a picture of him and Mr. Rudel posing holding Rudel's medals and badges in a bank vault.

It's true, at least in original Il2 and I have no doubt in Il2FB as well. If my Il2 gets shot down by AAA, it's almost always a radiator hit that does it.

Yes, it is modelled in FB.

You know you've hit the right spot when the Sturmovik starts to leave a black trail of oil-fed smoke from below the engine. When that happens, the IL2 is going down.

Save your ammo and move on to the next one.

Even a stuka's little peashooters can take down a sturmovik if you can bullseye the radiator. After that, it's just a matter of time before the engine overheats.

The radiator is the housing under the engine cowl. Check it out in Quick Mission Builder if you haven't seen an IL2 up close in the game.
