Being something of a Gladiator fan ( In fact I only just released a 73 Squadron skinpack for the gladiator a few weeks back http://www.mission4today.com/i...file=details&id=5980 (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads2&file=details&id=5980)) I was very interested to see that the 4.10 patch/upgrade will include:

Gladiator/J8A fixes. (revi reticle, spinning wooden prop texture, ski behavior, inclinometer & brake pressure gauge corrections, openable canopy)

Which will hopefully spark a renewed interest in flying the old girl !! I look forward to flying a Gladiator with canopy open http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

TD are doing an absolutely awesome job with these patches.

Some unsolicited gratuitous Gladiator PRON :P ...

Ah yes, the Gladiator. Almost perfect. Only lacking a view forward, and a rate of climb a little faster than an old lady wheeling shopping uphill. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Only kidding. an interesting old bird, though getting the best out of her takes finesse. Lovely skins too WTE_G. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

TD seem to be doing a fair bit of (largely unannounced) fixes on existing aircraft, partly due to the new navigation aids requiring some cockpit fixes. Another reason to look forward with anticipation to the new patch.

yeah ... I note over on 1C forum they have also fixed the weird Betty IAS in km not knots issue as well http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I must admit I'd not spotted that one - being a lazy SOB, I normally use the speedbar. The IJN using knots for airspeed and metres for height confused the hell out of me to start with, though I suppose there is a logic of sorts to it. With most Japanese cockpits I adopt the 'what happens when I wiggle the stick' approach for figuring out what instrument is which, and rarely seem to remain in the air long enough to worry about which is the fuel gauge - in a slow cruise in a Zero, you will run out of daylight before you run out of fuel anyway...

Back on topic, I get the impression that TD have been working through minor fixes while doing the more significant stuff, and had the patch come out when originally intended, much of this wouldn't have been done.

Naval aircraft from quite a few countries use/used knots even when aircraft from other branches of the military of the same country used kmh or mph. In game Japanese naval aircraft except the D3A1 and G4M1 (to be fixed?) are correct and use knots but all army aircraft are kmh.

Indeed and they are already talking about really interesting stuff like more seaplanes (would love a Z.501) as a possibility in 4.11 or later ... so IL2 clearly has a bit of life in it yet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Meanwhile flying an open canopy Gladiator is going to be awesome http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Glad to hear they are working on the ski equipped model. It gives the term "lethargic" new meaning.

The last time I checked, the J8 already has skis - do they mean a new FM?

Yes, the FM has always bee suspect on the ski equipped version.

Sorry but "ski behavior" doesn't mean FM change. Only just a small visual change. But the current always horizontally aligned skis do look little silly specially in dive.

I'm not sure if the ski version would have much different performance. At least the D.XXI with skis has pretty much similar performance as D.XXI with gears.

I always love getting in the J8A to duel with circling I-16s and -153s that are camping a base. It always comes as a nasty surprise when something starts out turning them :P

I know with the I-16 Type 6 with and without skies has distinctly different feel to the handling. Heavier and the center of gravity "feels" off... maybe that's placebo but I noticed a big difference flying the two back to back and maneuvering in combat.

The D.XXI doesn't have a retractable gear, while the I-16 has.

True ... but Vikate_ was discussing j8a modifications and it has fixed gear like the D.XXI .

My latest Gladiator skin I knocked up over the weekend - it illustrates well the spinning "Fairey Reed three-bladed yellow tipped metal prop" effect which is rather odd when, with engine stopped, the in-game aircraft is fitted with a two bladed wooden Watts:

Its a minor detail but its great its being fixed at long last.

I understand that, Galway. I was responding to IceFire who said the the I-16 with/without skis handles differently.

Imho, that's more pronounced here because the I-16 has a retractable gear when on wheels, which becomes a fixed gear with skis, while the D.XXI and the J8A have a fixed gear in both configurations.
So even when there's a notable difference in handling on the I-16, it's not the same as with a D.XXI or J8A.

Yeah to be honest I am not sure if skis versus fixed gear will have much effect at the slow speeds these old things punt along at.

Though I do not floats had a huge effect http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'll surely like to see these improvements to the Gladiator! It's one of my favorite early planes! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
