Just a few from my latest work. Currently it needs to go on a SERIOUS diet. Its at 4400 polly's without landing gears or controle surfaces!!! I new the P-38 would be high polly simply because its design is like 3 hulls and not just 1. I will ask Oleg for extra polly's in the budget simply because of its shape.

Just wondering what is the standard poly count for a plane in this game? I'm used to 2k+ poly counts on some of the nicer RIFLES in the Half-Life mods I play, and I even have a 13 THOUSAND poly ammbox for one mod.

2500 for fighters, 3500 for twin engine, and about 4000-4500 for 4 engine. Also, its not the pollygons on the aircraft, but remember. Half-life's big maps fill the back yard of a house in IL2 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif The wide open spaces take a LOT of CPU power and pollygons for the land. Also, you need to account for the worst case situation. 18 bombers and 18 fighters over a large city scape. Do the math on that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif One other thing. Once your done with the DM, LOD's and everything, the typical model will have 25,000 to 40,000 pillygons in it. The Go-229 had 33,000 polly's in it when I handed it to Oleg. Ow, lets not forget about the 2500 polly cockpit...

Half-life can push a 10K rifle in your hands, but look at the rifles on the ground and in the hands of someone else. They are no more then 50 polly's. Also, the maps are no more then 3500 at the most visable at one time. Add to that only 10+ people at 6000 each. Were Half-Life is pushing 50-60K of pollys in a screen shot at most, IL2 is pushing 180-200K. I should know. I did Half-Life maps. Look up de_area51 for CS. Great map I did.

Thanks for the info.

Don't know what p_ and w_models you are using...but mine are all straight from the v_models. So if say there are 3 people on screen, that's 7k for the players and 7-12k for the weapons. Still...no where what we are rendering here in IL-2. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif I use and make/hack hi-poly models, so I guess I can't say I'm the average Half-Life user. Everything is customized for me...

When I was a big CS guy, I did the same thing. I had every weapon in the v_models. No weapons were the same. Gold deagle, .50 cal Beretta M28A2 for the AWP, you name it. The best was the high detail Para I had. There was some great work done in that! Aaaa. Brings me back. Now if someone would just do the same for Bf-1942.

Looking at these pictures I must say:

Anybody calling this plane "ugly" must be a complete moron...

Ah, I remember SWOTL.

The P-38 came in there as an add-on, and I loved to fly it.

I created missions, using the P-38 with bombs and drop-tanks. Starting from England, going the long way attacking Peenemünde, defending successfully against 109s and making it back to home base with the last drop of fuel after a mission of several hours without using the time acceleration mode.../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

About 10-12 hours so far. Its still rather new. Typical aircraft take hundreds of hours to do.

Anyway, just a slight correctionL: Fighter planes can go up to 3000 polys. Cockpits can go 3000 too. The less the better, obiously.

The Gotha pit made it well under 2500. Amazing hay? The P-80 cockpit is also very slim. Thanks for the correction. 2500 was for IL2, they did bump it to 3000. I hope Oleg will let me do 3500-4000 on the P-38. He said no on the Gotha and I had to cut it back. You would think the Gotha would be easy to model low polly hay? No. The area around the air intakes and exaust took a lot, and the front gear alone took a a TON! The LOD's were easy. Even at 300 polly's the Gotha looked nice! Well all but the engines.

i think it should be treated as a twin engine bomber really in model terms so it should have the higher poly count because really it is the size of one and also the roundedness of it

I guess you have to allow some, too, for damage modeling.

I have heard about USAAF-pilots, who outturn the Zero and even the Ki 43 "Oscar" easily in the P-38. Any sources which can confirm this statements?

Hey Copperhead...stole it here:

http://garysplace.reference.directnic.com/art/

There's a much bigger version...and some other aircraft. All quite good.

The least I can do is credit the guy. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

All by Rikyu Watanabe...

I love it, but I think the nose needs a little more work, just a tad.

With Fowler flaps the P-38 could trun VERY tightly.

Check here for P-38 turn rates:
http://www.combatsim.com/htm/nov98/energy-man2.htm#cont

He makes some comparisons to P-51 turn-rates...seems like the highest one there is 33 deg/sec.

Dunno what the A6M's turn rate was...

Maj. Richard Bong, US's top ace used the P-38's vast speed advantage. Diving on the slower and lower Zero's. McGuire in 2nd place always out turned Zero's. I dont know if he was more sporting then Bong, or just had a bigger set http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif But all squad accounts of McGuire's kills said he would enguage Jap Zero's in a low and slow turn fight instead of using B&Z tactics! In fact, he died in a stall because of this. He also had two wing tanks he did not drop before entering the dogfight. His quad mates begged him to drop the tanks, but he had such confadense he could out turn the Zero's WITH the tanks, he thought he could do it. Unfortunatly the wing tanks make the aircraft unstable due to them being in a high drag area. Truly unfortunate that both Bong and McGuire did not survive long after the war to tell their stories. McGuire never saw the end of the war, and Bong died in a P-80 in California in a test run.

Someone start a poll on if Oleg HAS to give Gib some extra poly!!!

BTW Gibbage, I see you played CS.

I made cs_militia for cs way back in beta3 and they actually picked the sucker up for retail.

I played Militia quite a bit! Nice job. I had a popular map but it wasn never picked up. de_area51. You can check it out at file planet. http://www.fileplanet.com/files/60000/60145.shtml

I got some very good ratings on quite a few map reviews.
