I just recently heard about '46 being released soon. I read that the regions covered includes German occupied Europe. Does this mean that I will be able to fly as RAF or USAAF aginst Luftwaffe in France for instance? If so will it include fighters and bombers (especially Lancasters, B-17's, etc)? I also saw screenshots of fighters in the desert (North Africa. They didn't mention it as a region in the article I read. Does anybody have more info about this?
Cheers

As the sim is now, you can fly over france if you have the Ace's expansion pack.
I don't know what versions of the sim you have, but the 46 add on is just a "what if" add on, that simulates what could have happened if the X-planes that the Germans and Soviets were developing had gotten into mass production, and off the drawing boards.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I have Forgotten Battles and Pacific Fighters with no add-ons. The '46 version I am interested in is the DVD which apparently includes all releases and add-ons to date. This is according to Olegg from 1C Maddox. You can either get it like that, all on 1 DVD, or you can buy the last two add-ons seperately. Does the Aces expansion pack include campaigns for the RAF and USAAF, or does it only include single missions?
Cheers

Hi,

I have no idea what campaigns are included with the product, but there are good freeware dynamic campaign generators such as Il-2 DCG (Dynamic Campaign Generator) available, which can generate campaigns in any of the maps with any of the flyable aircraft in the sim, I think. So you could have the USMC fighting the Finns over Berlin if you liked. And there's also a raft of third-party static campaigns - see the Mission Builder's Forum on this site.

As for bombers, the biggest flyable bombers available are the B-25, He 111, and TB-3 - the B-17 is AI-only and the Lancaster is absent, and there's no prospect of change here.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

If you have Forgotten Battles, then you know what was added as new content in the patch(es) for it that brought it up to v1.22. Namely, the Normandy and Ardennes maps, the flyable P-51D and AI B-17G, the Japanese fighters, and the fictional Pacific online map.

In some ways Ace Expansion Pack felt like a rip-off when it was released because it officially included the Normandy and Ardennes maps, and the flyable P-51D-5NT, from the patches. Western Front fans were happy that it included flyable P-38s, P-51Bs and Cs, P-51D with gyroscopic site, Spitfires, Bf-110, etc., but AEP did not include Western Front dynamic campaigns. There was a reason for this ...

At about the same time, Russian Rocket Group (the creator of the Normandy and Ardennes maps + objects) was getting ready to release its own add-on product, "Battle Over Europe," a series of dynamic campaigns for those maps. BOE v1.0 does not include an RAF campaign but there have been patches released since then that add these campaigns. Incidently, the BOE team includes the guy who made the DGen campaign program and wrote all of the stock campaigns in Forgotten Battles and Pacific Fighters. It also includes the guy who next headed up the Pacific Fighters project, Pe-2, Sturmoviks Over Manchuria, and 1946 add-ons. Obviously, 1C:MG and RRG had an agreement that Western Front campaigns would not be included in Ace Expansion Pack so that consumers would have an interest in BOE.

In summary, it would be nice if BoE was included on the 46' DVD -- it is practically an 'official' part of the series -- but I'm guessing that it won't because JustFlight, not UbiSoft, is the publisher. Nevertheless, BOE is availble from JustFlight for only $15 USD and that includes the shipping from England.

Battle Over Europe is compatible with Forgotten Battles 1.22 but you can find the official AEP and PF updates at AirWarfare.com or a combined updates pack at CombatAce.com. You need Forgotten Battles for the core BOE product, Ace Expansion Pack for the AEP_BOE update, and the PF 'merged' version for the PF_BOE update.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Is Battle of Europe any good? Same quality as IL-2? I also had a look at CFS 3 Battle for Europe but saw a lot of negative publicity about it. Apparently it's not as good as CFS2. Problem is that CFS is getting dated in any case. Wonder if they will ever bring out a CFS 4 or something.
I'm sure that you can pick up that I am on the lookout for game that covers Western Europe. With FB and PF I can fly as Japan, Russia, Germany. Now also want to be able to fly as USA and British, but in more depth than what is covered by PF. So if anybody knows of a good flightsim that does cover Western Europe, let's hear about it.
Cheers

Yes. Well, same quality as "Forgotten Battles" because it relies on FB's maps, planes, objects, AI, etc. Graphically, FB is a huge step forward over IL-2. We'll let the old hands argue about FM and sound. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

One of the shortcomings of BoE as a sim is that the maps are relatively small. They're good for dogfights and getting to the action quickly but don't expect to be able to replicate truly historic missions. If you've been playing PF then you already know what I mean. There are some good moments to be had, however; I distinctly remember a night mission where I had to escort the airborne's C-47s at night, and all the flak and searchlights came on as flew over the coast and into the interior.

I also had a look at CFS 3 Battle for Europe but saw a lot of negative publicity about it. Apparently it's not as good as CFS2. Problem is that CFS is getting dated in any case.

CFS-3 was disappointing but mostly because Microsoft tried to revamp it to compete with IL-2. It might have been received better if CFS-3's developers had paid more attention to historic accuracy in the cockpits or even offered decent looking gunsights. CFS-3 felt unfinished overall, and the campaign engine doesn't really work as advertised. Personally, I found CFS-3 enjoyable for its free-flight mode alone; I'd load up on unlimited ammunition and hunt endless tanks and convoys to my heart's content. I like that it has Britain-to-Berlin coverage but the 'world' of CFS-3 is of a mixed quality. My opinion is that if CFS-3 had been released in 2000 instead of 2003, it would have been a huge success. It's like an anthology of all the classic sims of 1998-2002 rolled into one: EAW, SDOE, WWII Fighters, CFS, B-17II. Unfortunately, the product simply fell short of expectations when it was released.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Pe-2 = sold as a download.
Sturmoviks Over Manchuria = sold as a download.
46' = sold as a download.

FB + AEP + PF + Pe2 + SoM + 1946 = sold as a DVD collection. To be released in November.

Does that make sense?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Here's some screenshots of my modded-up CFS-3 game, back when I still had it installed on my computer. The modifcations include Winding Man's scenery, ShockWave's "FirePower," Korean War mod planes, AvHistory.org planes, etc.

Graphics of screenshots you posted looks good enough. I see you had Firepower. Reviews I read was that Firepower actually brought CFS3 up to the level that it should have been at the first place. Only problem is that I can't find it anywhere here where I stay (South Africa). Can still find brand new CFS3 being sold though. Don't feel like importing Firepower myself. Used to import a few collector's games like this in the past but got tired of all the hassles to do so.
On a totally different topic, it's quite clever of 1C Maddox to bring out BOB as a completely new game. Apparently they will work around the globe again with follow ons. In other words they can revisit all the same theaters of war as Il-2 series but with a new engine. So it starts all over again. You first buy BOB and after that even buy a new versioned PF, Russian front, etc. Same guys that bought Il-2 series will buy again because engine, graphics, etc will be better. Nice strategic move from the developer.
