Went out & bought my first naval sim yesterday
Features an alternative history & the immersion is great, rolling & pitching seas, rain ect. Have only played 2 campaign missions so far but really enjoying it. Do any in the community play naval sims & whats the word on what is good & what is rubbish.
On a further scary note it is starforce protected, from what I have read as far as peoples opinions go this is bad, I have to ask why? will it effect the way my PC operates?

dasreich: yes, i play Rising Tide...great water graphics and an inventive story. to be honest, i could play the entire game as a US PT boat skipper

Jane's Fleet Command was fun...but that games getting on in age.

check into whatever the latest incarnation of Harpoon has become.

dasreich, jds...how about a little review? Is this only multiplay? What do you command, what level of game--RTS, FPS, etc?

Thanks.

I hardily recommend Silent Hunter 3. Beautiful game and really immersive. Nothing like sneaking up on a convoy in the wee hours of the morning making a successful attack and having to crash dive to avoid the escorting destroyers. With the ship rocking from depth charges and the crew yelling german words i cant understand. Leaks starting and the hull creeking.

Can you tell us some more about Enigma? I was thinking about buying it a while back but it looked a little too arcadish. What kind of game play depth does it have?

Enigma Rising Tide sort of rides the rail between arcade and sim...it has slightly simplified (but don't read "dumb") command features. you spend most of your time on the bridge of your warship issueing orders and navigating your ship. you can either play as a surface ship or a sub skipper. i guess it would fall in the RTS department, although you can always jump to a gun turret/AA station/torpedo tube station to let loose a few rounds yourself. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

it works both online and offline.

the storyline features an alternate history...the First World War never really ended and the planet is stuck in permanent crisis mode. the year is 1937 and Imperial Germany has a lock on supremacy of the European continent. England and Japan have forged a strategic alliance. The US never intervened into WW1 and is trying it's best to stay out of the growing and escalating global disaster.

you can command ships of any three faction...

the graphics are sweet, the gameplay intuitive w/o being stupid and the story is great...go get it!

The sim has developed issues, so far I have had 2 crashes to desktop, 1 in game & 1 at a settings menu, & the protection system is playing up, sometimes it recognises the disk, sometimes it wont.
Its a shame I was really enjoying it, but I dont get off on putting up with cr@p, disk recognision failures shouldnt happen. So back to the game shop it goes for money back, & maybe Ill look at something else, dunno yet I feel pretty dark about the whole issue.

dasriech;

That's a shame. I played the demo of Enigma Rising Tide and was quite impressed overall. I also got to play some of Silent Hunter III. Both are great games with SH3 getting the eye-candy award. ERT looks great but IMO SH3 takes the cake.
I'd play either one or even both except this flight sim by Oleg Maddox has competely taken over all of my free time it's so good.

good to see other people are excited about Knights of the sea. The media section has some nice pics but the dev team have posted some interesting stuff in the forum as well. woofiedog also started a thread here with a link to about 100 pics of the ships and planes from the game.

The worst issue of "Enigma" is the discrepancy between Allied and German ship design. The "Lohengrin" Destroyer (which would be categorized as "Torpedobootszerst√¬∂rer" in the Imperial German Navy) is actually a copy of an Allied design (compare it with the USS Ward in PF and you'll be surprised). Secondly - and that is the worst thing I found - the german destroyer (don't remember the designation) is a design that was outdated at the beginning of WW1 and wasn't produced anymore. The modern turrets made the "covered guns" of the early Dreadnought - era obsolete. In comparison with the British/Japanese and US destroyers in the game it's a shame to see such a dinosaur. Why didn't they go for a Destroyer Type 1936B with three twin - 15cm turrets? This would be about equal with their opponents.

But the last straw that threw the game off my HDD were the frustrating missions. The last mission of the german surface campaign was a disgrace. I had to restart it countless times because the initial position (which is a bit random) I got was impossible to survive for more than 30 seconds - you weren't even at full speed before your ship was a wreck.

Too bad - the idea was not bad, but there were too many "but"s in game design for my peace of mind.
