i believe you have to be in a squadron to play there but its great fun if you like full real settings.

I'd also add that if you join a squad and VOW you should definately concider getting voice comms. It brings the experiance to a whole new level.

VOW is great. You have to wait some time to enter a mission though-from 10mins to even 2hours.

Also be sure that all participants have cons above 56K.Lousy ISP kills the fun very often too.

If you're on Eu time then usually no longer wait for a game launch than 10-20 mins.

Best thing with VOW the way I see it is that it's instant fun.
You pick a slot and wait for 10 mins. Then mission launch and you read the brief.
Then off you go. A mission is usually somewhere between 20 mins to 1 hour.
After mission is finished you can go to the website and have a look at your statistics.

The VOW website shows all the statistic you can dream of.

Only thing bad is that unless you're riding with a friend or a squad then it's all solo.
Everyone fights for the ebst plane. First come, first serve.
Then when the game is launched everybody rush for the missiontarget to get another kill to add to the stats.

VOW stands for Virtual Online Warping (just kidding, although they should probebly change it to that/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif ). If your a dogfighter then you will be greatly dissappointed by it, but if you are an interceptor or a mudmover then VOW is great. The missions are hand made by a variety of individual players and so the missions vary greatly in quality and scope. Some are near lagless and very well thought out, others are the laggiest missions I have ever played and the objectives are simply stupid (ie your 8 Bf 109E's are expected to accomplish 11 different objectives and BTW, you don't have enough fuel to reach your first one). Overall I rate VOW as meh. It isn't good, it isn't bad. But it is better than VEF2's new uber crap mission style. Why the hell did they have to take a good campaign generator and f*ck it up?

As we all know, the Soviet Union had too many fighter pilots during WW2. So Stalin's scientists came up with a brillient way to solve this problem. They would make some of their pilots fly British made Hurricanes. The Hurricane was an uber flying coffin. It was designed to maximize pilot kills by providing nothing but fabric and a few wooden spars around the cockpit. This setup prevented the pilot from escaping easily while at the same time not interfering with enemy bullets and shrapnel trying to pass through it. The rest of the Hurricanes structure was designed to ricochet bullets and shrapnel into the cockpit. And thanks to the cockpits superb design, all of them would pass through the cockpit and the pilot inside with little difficulty. Of course the Hurricane's designers didn't stop there. In order for the Hurricane to become a flying coffin, they had to make it easy to shoot. They did this by making the Hurricane the slowest monoplane fighter in use at the time and even gave it a very bulky shape so that it would be easy to spot and hit. The final feature of the Hurricane was its ability to bury or cremate itself. And because it was made of biodegradable materials, the Hurricane was environmentally friendly after it buried itself. Because of these brillient features, the Hurricane was a perfect flying coffin and helped the Soviets solve the pilot surplus they were suffering.

Squads - you don't have to be in a squad - unaffiated pilots accepted

Settings - it's full real - no PL or minimap or icons (it's easy to get lost or to become separated from your teammates).

Warping - some lag - but what do you expect when the guy you're firing at is on the other side of the planet (my apologies to East Asian pilots, but you might as well be on the moon).

Software/Website - best result compiling sofware ever - the creators of VOW put a lot of work into it, and it shows (as an example, my mediocre stats can be found at http://www.vow-hq.com/index.php?page=pilot&action=stats&id=1739).

Waiting - if you're in the US and flying in the evenings, you usually have to wait 15-30 minutes for the next mission; if you fly on Saturday morning with the Euro crowd, there's a mission launching every 5 minutes.

Missions - everything from ho-hum (let's fly recon at 5000 meters for 30 minutes), to wow (you barely survived a melee, got xx kills, found your way home and landed your shot up hulk with heart pounding and sweaty palms).

Communication software - not a must, but very helpful, especially when you have three bogies on your tail.

IMHO, VOW is pretty cool. Sign up, fly a while and see if you like it. You can always go back to DF servers with easy settings.

Well, my experience,so far, has been somewhat different than yours, Carguy.

I don't think I've waited longer than maybe 20 minutes. Sometimes they fill up in a minute or two if you're with a group going from one mission to another.

And as far as the 56K is concerned, I connect at 56K and run comms and have no problems. My ping rarely goes over 300 and more often is below 200 (between 150 and 180 usually).

Also, I haven't found VOW to be any more laggy than any other rooms/servers.

Sure, but think how many times the host swapped slots and you were left alone thus missing the whole mission. Also count restarts and suddenly activating "away" mode./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Exceptionally good ISP then.I get same pings, but I run 128K ISDN.I flew with guys from China - everytime a timeout ping(in HL).From my experience anything below 200 guarantees a good game.I mean,I have never been told I was ruining the game.

Zooming isn`t about ping itself. It`s the difference between you and other players. When I fly behind a guy who has ping of 200 higher than mine,he`s zooming like hell.I never choose a host with a ping higher than 300ms(asking if he`s a firewall enabled).

Even if from the begining of VOW everyone were told to use default skins,I still can see a guy without the markings.

Personally,I find VEF to be almost lag-free(just few missions flown),but it`s no fun.
