S! Oleg

(American, British, Japanese etc Bomber fanatics please go to another thread - this is Russian exclusively!).

You are obviously a patriot and you have brought to the world a magnificent simulation of what were 'Forgotten Battles'.

So why do you deny your heritage?

All we have is the TB3 and drool over what else was there as we taxi past the AI replications of so many others.

A Sqn of Pe8's bombed Berlin in 1941 I believe? They are in the programme. We cannot fly them! We go on line and fight virtual wars against LW equipment we cannot compete with - yet the means to fight back are there if we can only have them.

Oleg - if you do nothing else then please give us a more modern Russian bomber than the TB3 - Please!

Good post CAVOK.

I'd love to fly the Russian single and twin-engined bombers (Tu-2, Pe 2 & 3, Su-2).

I hope somewhere these aircraft are heading towards inclusion into this program. I would rather they be in than the others from those countries you listed.

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

I am not nitpicking Badsight's post - this is more a bit of trivia instead of a mindless 'bump'.

On the flight in question the aircraft did not go non-stop but staged through Scotland on other business.

There are some very good photos of it on the ground there in 'Aircraft of the Fighting Powers' (Vol 5 page 52 plus three view scale drawings of the aircraft). Note however it is described there as a TB7 (which was presumably the prototype batch of the Pe8).

Got an idea::

Lets discuss, link to, the real life missions conducted by Soviet Tu~2, Pe~2, Su~2, IL~4, etc..., and missions conducted against them by Germany and allies...and make this bigger than Fw190 thread.

Suggestion:: We could also discuss Eastern Front history of Ju~88 and variants, Do~217, etc...although I think those aircraft are being worked on now by 3rd Party members of the miltant radical FB camp.

Prove to Oleg we really hope to sim these aircraft.

Not to be nasty to you Cavok but...

There has been a number of threads here and at IL2 Center where the desire for the Pe-8 to be made flyable has been expressed. These go back as far back as the original release of IL2.

The problem has been and continues to be that there are no photos of the internals of the Pe8. There are no surviving examples either. There were never that many of them and IIRC there were wild variations in fitout and modifications.

The Pe-8 was an interesting choice to include in IL2 to begin with due to it's low numbers. It really belongs in the same category as the Bi-1 and Mig3U, aircraft that most of us would have not been aware of if it were not for Oleg Maddox.

Pe-2/3 family or the Tu-2 would be much more doeable and much more relevant to the course of the Russian front.

You are not being nasty - you are being practical!

If the Pe8 is impractical (and I think a few hundred were built) then why not the others you mentioned? We simply have to have an effective Russian bomber for practical on line combat.

We have He111 and Stuka squads coming out of the woodwork and Gawd help us when the Ju88 is out!

The B17 will help but is really stretching it all a bit thin credibility wise. We just need some effective RUSSIAN bombers!

There are a few other Russian bombers it'd be nice to see too.

Archangelskii Ar-2 (basically an improved SB fitted for dive-bombing. Superceded by the Pe-2.)
Photograph at Il2center under the SB-2 entry. Note reprofiled nose, redesigned cowlings and dive brakes.

Yakovlev Yak-2/4 (a light twin engined recon bomber. Not as successful as Yakovlev's memoirs would have us believe!)
http://sifoner.tripod.com/yak/yak.html

Yermolayev Yer-2 (Long range bomber. Two distinct series, early & late war powered by different, Klimov or Mikulin & Charomskii diesel engines respectively.)

Fascinating machines. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

The plane we need most is the Pe-2, one of the best bombers that Russia had. There were few Pe-8s though I still wouldn't mind flying them (another four-engine aircraft would be nice).

I agree. The PE-8 could make a great adition to Il2Fb. It may be a challenge collecting all the data, but It's out there.

Icaris1,

The information you posted is good if modeling the PE-8 as an AI-only plane, but we already have that. Flight test data and cockpit photos (prefereably blueprints) is what's needed. They say there are none, but I'm sure they'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Which model of the Pe-8 do you propose to use? There was a whole range of engines used on this aircraft. Started with inlines, then diesels and finally radials. Believe the radial engined version (4 x 1630hp, ASh-82) were the ones used on raids to Germany. Also known as the TB-7 and ANT-42. Soviets were a tactical airforce, didn't use many bombers larger then the twin engined ones, usually seen. You could always try for the updated 1934 and 1936 versions of the TB-3. Hopefully, would only be a minor project to modify existing M-17 version. They had more armament, power and speed. Were produced till 1939 and at least saw extensive use in WW2.

hmmm. Pretty aircraft. Object Viewer says IL~4 was hard to fly over long distances. No FB autopilot?

Compare forward fuselage appearance of IL~4 with (much later) IL~54 of 1950s. Latter sharper, but same "feeling."

Nah, the Il-54 doesn't have those 2 huge radial engines (one of the reasons the IL-4 is such a great looking plane).

Hmmm! The IL4 looks nice (I would take a dozen straight off) but come on guys we all know that sometimes size does matter!!!

Same bomb load as the TB3, Twice the speed and CANNONS in the back turret!!! Yummy!

Who cares what model it is? I'm not superstitious or anything!

Who here lives in/near Warsaw?

Petlyakov Pe-2FT, preserved/Muzeum Wojska Polskiego, Warsaw, Poland,

It doesn't look like it's in the best of shape. The cockpit is glazed over, so it's a good bet that it may be empty inside. Worth a look tho...
