Here are a few postcards from Kiev. I went there for a little trip yesterday. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'll try and post a few more shots from higher above the town later today.

Notice the toblerone shaped buildings. I have never noticed this before, but then I don't always have the settings on max. Some of the houses become triangular in profile from a distance, it's almost as if there's an intermediate stage between the being flat and being fully rendered. Have we had this before?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

You can have no idea just how hostile aircraft can be until they come to your area...
Aircraft which strafe or bomb your positions should be regarded with suspicion, if not deep mistrust. Aircraft which bomb and strafe your position and wear a red circle should certainly be regarded with deep mistrust. In fact, the deeper the better. A six-foot-deep slit trench is an ideal place from which to mistrust them...

Here's a link to the Wikipedia page on Kiev:

Kiev (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiev)

And the landmarks:
Landmarks of architecture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiev#Architectural_monuments)

Including the 1000 year-old (give or take) St. Sophia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Sophia_Cathedral_in_Kiev)

Usually considered to be modelled after the Hagia Sophia of Istanbul (Constantinople), but remodelled in the 17th Century the interior is still Byzantine:

Astounding city.

Awesome thanks! Very nicely made town...with such an old engine! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Does anyone know if the map designers take the real road layouts from back then?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Going to be a Godsend for an early war matchup. I was getting sick of the Smolensk map. The Kiev map shows up just in time! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I must say that I find that the new install seems very stable and that stutters are kept to a minimum. I don't normally play with settings all maxed out, but have found no problem at all flying that way with 4.07m. Everything is very stable. I can't say for sure, but get a general feeling that things have improved performance wise. This is just a first impression though. You have to considder that I have mainly flown on the new maps using only one aircraft (ie AI has not been computed). Quick missions with several aircraft seem more stable to me too though.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

That's very reassuring. I have read some posts that seem to indicate a significant loss in performance as a result, probably, of the software protection system.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

No they unfortunately don't. Haven't checked them all, but at least Berlin, Leningrad, Helsinki and Viipuri are just abstractions.

Many important landmarks are also omited completely (Viipuri Castle!), or use generic objects to represent them. That's why you can see the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in the middle of Kiev in the screenies above http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Nice churches, though. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

There IS Olympic Stadium in the middle of Kiev in real life, built in 1914, renovated in 1941! Here is more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olimpiysky_Sport_ComplexHere is more on 1941 reconstruction from Wikipedia
"The complex was scheduled for completion in 1941 and the ceremonial opening was scheduled for June 22, 1941. However, in a monumental twist of history, on that very day Kiev was bombed by the Luftwaffe as part of the Nazi invasion to the Soviet Union, the onset of the Great Patriotic War. The opening ceremony was not cancelled however: a sign hung on the stadium gates optimistically indicated that it was merely "postponed until after the victory". And indeed, following the 1945 Soviet Victory over Nazi Germany, not only was the stadium reconstructed, but tickets issued in 1941 were honored for admittance to an opening ceremony of the Stalin Respublikanskiy (Republican) Stadium in 1948."

Amazing story

When it comes to the center of the city - yes, the layout is real. Layout of the road network on other map area is also based on the real WWII era map, yet about 50-60% of villages were omitted together with a number of small roads, in order to keep the map playable (a big number of buildings would have heavy impact on the FPS).
We also could not model all Kiev and region architectural landmarks (there is about 800 years old church complex in Chernigov, for instance, which wasn't modelled) due to our limited resources.

The elevation is also made as close to the real, as it was possible in the game.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Excellent, if the elevation is real, and before raaid asks, is this place modelled?

There is one small mistake on that map - one of the belltowers of one of the church complexes (Lavra bell tower) was blown up in September 1941, Soviets accused Germans in doing that and Germans accused Soviets in mining it, the belltower was restored in 1990s, so this should be pre-September 1941 map theoretically http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
