View Full Version : Weird, cartoony "Key moment of assassination" effect

First let me say that this game has me drooling in anticipation; it looks to have a level of realism and immersiveness that's just insane and that no other game has yet achieved.

But there was a moment in the X06 Onstage Demonstration that kind of put me off. Right where Jade Raymond says, "And the key moment of assassination," where Altair plunges his hidden dagger into the neck of the guy, the screen pauses and this weird, red, cartoon-like starburst pattern radiates from where the wound is.

For me, it was very off-putting. At first I was like, "Is that supposed to be blood?" In a world where everything was as real as it could be, it looked like some sort of cartoony Mortal Kombat effect.

Upon closer inspection, it's not blood, even though it is blood-red. Whatever it is, it's still a cartoony effect, apparently put there to lend drama to the situation. For me, it totally took me out of the immersiveness I've felt while watching it or any of the trailers or gameplay demonstrations.

Maybe it's just me, but I really hope this effect isn't in the final version of the game. In such a realistic game, I'd much rather see realistic blood--even if there's a lot of it, even if it spurts out or something. But I'd rather see no blood at all (just imagining it's there, out of my sight) rather than have the effect that was on the demonstration. Like Jade said, it's a key moment. Everything seems immersive and reality-based leading up to that moment, and then after when you're trying to escape. Why put a cartoon effect in there that takes you out of that? Just seeing the dagger plunge and then Altair closing the guy's eyes is one of the coolest things ever, all on it's own.

The footage I'm talking about can be found here:

http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?fs=1&id=2581

Just pick X06 Onstage Demonstration or the HD version, and it's right at about 4:02 minutes in. (Otherwise, it's a very cool video and not on the AC website that I've found.)

Check it out. I'm still getting the game, no matter what, but I just wonder if I'm alone in this.

I agree with you, I didn't like that effect that much either. I'd be surprise if this same exact effect end up to be the one...

It looks crappy, I agree with you there. I hope they do something about it. But even if they keep it that way, I still think it's gonna be a great game. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

*L* Devs read forums all the time specifically for feedback from posters (note the plural), and they have been known to change things from time to time before the game comes out based on that feedback. Not uncommon, buddy. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Since I was the OP and you were only the second posteron this thread, it's funny to me how you somehow already knew that I was the only "one person" who felt this way (see third and fourth posts), and how you knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was "definitely staying." It might, it might not--the point is, you're pretending like you know, and you don't. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Just to clarify, I was not assuming that the devs would change things specifically for me, if I was the only one who felt that way about it. Contrary to your assumption, I am not an idiot. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif But I do want to thank you for welcoming me to the forum. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

This I agree with wholeheartedly. As I said before, I'm still going to get it even if they keep it in there; it's still going to be a great game. And I'm still hoping they change that feature. Who knows? If it's possible to change (seems like a relatively easy thing), and enough people feel that way about it, maybe they will. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif

Did you spend a while writing that speech?

Whatever, anyway, I'm just saying, there's like, a 99.9% chance that they won't change it, (I rounded that possibility to "definitely") I mean, for such a small little detail, I don't think they'd bother

Oh and, what's with the *L*'s? What is that? Been seeing that A lot recently...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I think swiftslasher7 was a bit harsh with his comment. I think everybody's opinion counts and the Ubisoft team should take them into consideration, especially this one. I totally agree with mnhthiessen, I think the effect was really dull and it seemed like the assassination was just a joke. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif I really love the reality in this game and if the most dramatic part of the assassination is that chilidsh I'd really be frustrated. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Swiftslasher7's fist comment by the way.

Well, I don't really agree with Mnhthiessen about the "all the devs read the forums". If they manage to change this stuff, it's because it was plan this way. I don't think that it would be because of a post in the game forum. Fortunatly, we all agree on this one! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

That being said, I agree with Bloxham that this might be a placeholder...

Did you spend a while writing that speech?
Nope, it actually didn't take me long at all to put those thoughts together. Why? Does it take you a long time to read it?

Actually, I agree with JN006. Where I was coming from was that I'd heard in interviews in the past with different devs, on other games, that they had checked the official forums of the games they were working on, and had changed minor things, when they were able, when they felt that doing it would make the game more popular according to the fan feedback. I'm not just talking about one post, here, but more of what they saw as a sort of general consensus among the forum-goers (my information is vague, so I'm a little fuzzy on the details). I think I even remember Cliffy B mentioning doing that with Gears of War, in an interview sometime within the past year--I could be very wrong with that reference, and I can't provide any links to any quotes, but I thought I remembered reading him saying that in an interview. Either way, I'm certain I remember other devs saying that on other games: that fan feedback had steered some small aspects of their development. Something about that they'd used the official forums as a tool to get feedback from the fanbase--because posters on official forums are by definition the ones most expecting a game to come out, and if a lot of them thought something might suck, it could mean it might be worth looking into. Maybe I'm smoking crack--maybe they were already on the fence about something, and the feedback just made it easy for them to change it--but I just remember somewhere reading about that happening on other games. From JN006's posts in other threads, it seems he'd be in a better position to know. I'm just wondering what exactly I was reading in those interviews! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

The main point of this thread, though, was that the effect itself was very disappointing, but that the game looked to rock so hard that I'd end up buying it anyway. I wondered who shared that opinion--so far it seems that most everyone on the thread shares that opinion except swiftslasher7. Sorry, buddy. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif (Using the smileys to translate emotion, since text is so "horrible" at it.) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

I will be very happy if this effect just turns out to be a placeholder right now. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

Well you're right, it's difficult to know what you mean when you are reading something. And I don't think you have to decorate your comment with emoticons, maybe just one when you're not sure about how people may react when reading your post. But this is http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/353.gif and I think I'll better return to the main idea of this thread.

Got it.

yeah back on topic.

the first time i saw it, I was like, "oh cool, the blood moves, but the video doesn't, that's stylish." so I didn't really care too much about it. But I guess that would bother some people. Personally, I always looks for people to do things in different ways cuz I like seeing different styles of executing a concept, whether in a game, movie or etc.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

We have to wait and see, if this will be final "Key moment of assassination" or not. But I guess the game expectation is so high that they all are worried before the game is released, but I guess the surprise elements of the game will heal that. But hey game is great and we should go for good sides of the game.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

That's cool. That's what I was originally wanting when I started this thread, just people's honest opinion about the effect. I like stylish too. I just thought that here, with so much based on realism, that effect took me out of that realism. I personally LOVE the realism of AC, and think it's one of AC's main strengths (which I think the devs are going for). Obviously if the effect were in something like "Viewtiful Joe" or "XIII", there wouldn't be a thing out of place. Here, though, I want to stay in the realism as much as I can. To me, this much realism is different. It's looking like AC has the most realism of any game like this to date, which is what I think is drawing so many gamers to it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

For some reason the killing effect reminds me of those special takedowns on Burnout Revenge http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I don't actually mind it, I found it pretty cool. I have to agree that the red stuff coming out made it a little wierd, but other than that I like the effect http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
