How does CFS 2 FM compare to IL2 not FB. I am considering getting it because I don't see the patch for FB comming anytime soon. Also, I want to add Sabre vs Mig.

Any comments would be helpful

Thanks

I don't think it does, though it would be tolerable (not realistic, merely tolerable) if it weren't for the damage model /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

It's a fun sim and I'd buy it if the price is right, after all there are Corsairs, Wildcats and Zeros in there. The stock flight models are a joke, but still approximate the real planes enough to make it interesting (eg. zeros turn and climb well but don't have neg G cut out). There are tons of downloads and 3rd party addons too. 1% planes are a definite improvement but they feel kind of bland and never realy captured the feeling that Il2 does IMHO. Albiet still a fun game.

If you are actually bored already with FB, then go ahead and find yourself a copy of CFS2. It might turn out to be a fun experience for you. You can tweak and customize and try this and that, but don't expect much from the flight models if that's what you really like.

When I got CFS2 over a year ago, I hated it and gave it away. Since then I've messed around with the first CFS and CFS3 and that's given me a better appreciation of CFS2. It's an improvement over CFS as a simulator but also better than CFS3 for playability.

CFS2 has really captured my attention these last few nights. I've been playing the IJN's 'George' and I love that plane's rearward visibility.

My aircraft models and skins are all stock. I think the 3D and visuals are pretty good; looking out over the wings with maxxed graphics settings looks pretty real to me. The clouds look really good sometimes, flakey at other times, but I like that the weather changes and sometimes you may be flying in rain.

I've got some replacement Pacific textures installed so to me the terrain looks really nice. I can't remember what the stock looked like though. Airfields look cheap from low altitude but the buildings look great when you taxi by them.

Muzzle flashes and primary/secondary explosions for the aircraft are terrific, maybe the best out there. The smoke trails the burning planes leave look really good. I've got some custom effects installed (Blade 124's pack which is a combo of stuff by Ghost Pony, Nanni and Nibbio). The tracers are so-so and, as said, the damage model makes it too easy to kill your enemies.

I don't know if you can stall and spin your airplane. I've abused them in manouvers and mostly I get black outs. I also don't know if there is any kind of engine overheat modeled. Sometimes I think the engine is running sluggish, but I can't decide if it's degraded performance or a computer memory issue.

I've only tried one of the 1% aircraft back when I first installed the game. I didn't like it much but that was because it was so much harder to fly than the stock Corsair. Maybe I should give them another try.

Dude. CFS2 sucks. It's just CFS1 with better graphics. There was a time when they were state of the art, but that time is gone. If you are so hard up and bored, go play something hot and modern like Star wars Galaxies. Thats what I am doing. And whatever I do or buy is always good.

LOL... I don't think I ever called CFS2 "state of the art" /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

RBJ plays Star Wars Galaxies? In the SWG forums, do you ask for a light sabre on a slider? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Go here for 1% aircraft: http://www.avhistory.org/

If you ever lose the site link, just go to the SimHQ CFS3 forums and look for new aircraft updates by Bear257th.

There is also a great p38j25lo for cfs - which is the only reason I ever flew the simm. (it's a paid addon) The orignial flight models are crap - the corsair suffers compression when it should be at it's best - the zero does not suffer compression etc. etc. ridiculous. I used the wells flight models - and 1% addons.

compared to il2 cfs2 is junk - if you patch it it will be a little better. But still not in the same ball-park.

I know this may be a bit off topic, especially since I do not have CFS2 (or any CFS for that matter), but a while back I purchased the Real Air Marchetti SF260 for FS2002 and that flight model seemed pretty darned believable (spins and stalls, etc), maybe more so than any other Sim (arguably of course). If they can do such a good job for a FS2002 plane why not CFS2?

XyZspineZyX

As much as I loved my 2 years of CFS2, as 4thFG_Ripper the flight model was acceptable, not as realistic as IL2-FB.

But beware! CFS2 can easily be hacked and there are many cheaters!

I can go on writing on and on but that is basically it!

CFS2 is a dead horse and CFS3 (is like a DC 10)-Rushed to market with many Flaws!

If you are bored with FB waiting for the patch......what the H@ll is wrong with you??!!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif ...Just KIDDING!! seriously though..... CFS2 is ok...I wasnt all that impressed when I was into CFS1...... dont waste your time...I mean...the FMs are better than CFS1 but they are still not anywhere near what you are used to in IL2 or even more so in FB...You already own the best commercial combat prop flight sim available today...what do you hope to accomplish by going backwards? Do what you want but IMO it's a waste of time.... spend the money you would use to buy CFS2 and get a nice Headphone mic combo...or better yet...save it for the paid FB add on...when ever THAT arrives.../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

I saw CFS 2 for 15 euros in a gaming shop. It is IMO too much for a game that old. BUT, is there a newer game where you can land on carriers? I don't know of any. I really would like to try to land on (virtual) carriers.

CFS2 is still the most popular flight sim in Japan. There are almost 50 paid add on packs one may buy. The graphics are much better, but not as good as IL2. I bought 4 add on packs, but I think most new one are not so good. Mostly Japanese fantasy pack. Midway pack is best.
