Interesting. What is the tank combat like? Anything like Panzer Elite?

I like the tanks, although the German tanks suck compared to the Red armies.

Its fun teamworkin in tanks. The commands are the best ive seen.

Hell yeah RO is tight.

I can't hit the broad side of a barn with a rifle, but it's awesome.

Yeah, was recommended to me. Looked great, so I ordered it on CD. Should be here soon http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

Apparently one of the great things is that blokes (and blokettes) cannot jump around doing that highland fling **** while blowing you to pieces, like on other certain games. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

Does anyone know if All Seeing Eye supports it? Or how is the best way to get onto multiplay?

Is steam a hassle to use? My HD is bursting at the seams and I'm a bit worried it will do the: "While you were sleeping, we just downloaded 1500 giga-wads of data into your computer. Press OK to continue..." thing on me.

No, after Steam and the game is installed, all you have to download is Custom maps, which are optional(Oh and updates of course). Steam is a great application, IMO...

Yeah, I actually had mine waiting at home when I knocked off work. I loaded it up and went into battle. Spawned with a group near some tanks, followed a bloke over and jumped into the same tank with him imagining all the glory of going into battle together and hopefully complementing his driving abilities with my meagre gunnery skills http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
Then I get that sort of statement on my screen http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
Actually, on this particular server there didn't seem to be anybody co-operating at all and if a few had, they probably knocked the rest off the map. Alot of CODUO and COD2 braindead tactics employed http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif
I thought "OK - one twit", but no. Nearly every tank I tried to assist with, I got some very interesting remarks, so I got my own tank. Then when parked on a rise, some !D!0T jumpsinto the drivers seat, hurtles down into the middle of a clusterfurq and proceeds to get me blown to pieces. I couldn't even take aim on anything because he was slewing all over the place and my gunners view was just a blurry landscape flying past http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
Later a voice came on asking if any one could hear him and I replied. He wanted to team up and I agreed, but my connection dropped out for some reason and I had to get to bed anyway, so I left.
Great game and no regrets about the purchase, but obviously the twits still find a way to deduct the realism back away from it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Unfortunately no. The optics and crew stations are rendered very nicely, but the actual tank combat is very messed up.

The tanks use a hitpoint based damage model. When you get hit, you will see your tank "health" go from White, to Yellow, to Red, then you blow up. The devs stated that penetrating hits that don't hit critical areas (of which there are only two: engine and ammo) do "global damage" to the tank. Basically: you take 2 or more penetrating hits and you blow up in a big explosion.

You can imagine how realistic that is.

At this point, the system is even worse due to bugs. A guy did a test where he made a custom map with T-34/76s and Tigers. His friend had the Tiger, and he the T-34. He was able to consistently penetrate the front of the Tiger's hull from 500 meters away, which is not historical at all. Go to the game's forums for pics and narration of this test if you don't want to believe me.

I think a lot of people are lauding RO tank combat without realizing how fake it actually is. The slow movement and optics modeling gives the impression of high realism, but it is really little better from BF2 tanks in terms of damage modeling. True, RO tanks have engine and track knockouts, but neither is working correctly currently because of a major bug (which was finally acknowledged by the devs a month ago.

To make the tanks truely at the level of "IL-2 quality," as the RO devs were bragging prior to realese, they for one thing need to add an obvious element: crew wounding and death. Taking out the crew should be implemented while buttoned up, which it is not.

The result is that people don't choose realistic shots, they simply aim at any part of the tank that is showing hoping to wittle down hitpoints, then are gratified by the huge explosion http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
