We're lookin at some time down the road before PC's canequal consoles as far as gaming is concerned.

IBM sqeezed another another core on the 3.2 processor for the new XBox to get it to 9.6 Ghz. The ATI graphics are 48 pipelines that is 3 X's greater than current gen hardware. With 10mb of on die ram to handle AA...

Could you imagine being able to run at whatever resolution you wanted without AA causing ANY slow down?

In the PC field we are seriously limited by the CPU regardless of size... truth of the matter is both graphics companies are held back by the CPU...

Now with dual core coming on in Intel and AMD we can easily handle 32 pipelines by a graphics card. Each pipe on a GPU is basically an individual processor. It will be cool but over a year away before we start to see any benefits of the research.

No, actually I think in the past, PC's have always been well ahead of consoles, even before they were released.

I think this is the first time a console is ahead of PC's and a huge lead it is, but you're right, PC's should start catching up quick.

Which is why I am not upgrading anything for my computer till I see what happens here. These consoles confirm that hardware wise, manufacturers can already easily produce components that far surpass the latest components we can currently buy (and no I didn't need to see these consoles to know that, but they indicate soon, we'll be seeing them for PC's). No new CPU for me till I see duel cores. No new video card for me till I see 20 pipelines and higher. 10MB L2 cache? Yes please.

I wonder what games will look like in 10 years. At the rate we are moving , in 2 years, I bet we'll be looking at the current new crop of games as if it were some commodore 64 game.

I was wondering why someone had posted pictures of a car until I relised that they were screenshots!!

Things are really going to change in the next few years.
IMHO:
Consoles are bound to get better.
Flight sims are bound to appear on consoles.
Console flight sims are bound to get better.

Also (IMHO):
Interest in flight sims will increase.
More flight sims will sell.
We will end up with more good flight sims, and more bad flight sims to choose from.

PC technology will soon catch up; as it's the same technology.

However, how long will it be before PC owners upgrade to this level. Games manufacturers will aim their games at a level where the majority of PC can run it. While the XBox 360 games can run at this level out of the box.

Any date yet for the release of the next gen consoles?

December for the Xbox & 2nd quarter 2006 for the PS3

PS3 sounds like a real beast , but it still comes down to how hard the software pushes the hardware

GTR is good..actually it's the best racing sim out currently. As far as Pixel shader usage and overall graphics detail... The consoles will be signifigantly ahead for some time.

Object detail other than the individual car will be much greater in newer game for consoles now that the new X Box and PS3 are reality.

With the new Next Gen video cards coming out hopefully these will really shine in a GTR environment...will be cool none the less.

This isn't a consoles are cool thread, I don't even own one and never have lol. It's just being excited about coming software and hardware.. We shouldn't get into chest thumping in a thread like this either because consoles can help the PC environment greatly with forward looking hardware development.

No kidding, sunflower. I'm chomping at the bit to build new computer for editing HD video.(I'm waiting for dual core, dual chip... and BTX)

Now with hearing the power of these consoles I'm pretty bummed.

I got GTR the other night. WOOOO HOOOOOOO!
I've got it looking pretty darn sweet. But I don't see reflections like that on the cars. Niether are the trees and buildings that nice.
They look pretty good in GTR. But DAAAAAAMN!!!!!! Those trees, asphalt, and OMG that's NOT a real Lambourgini Countash, but a cg version.
Look at the overhead of the Lambougini entering into the hairpin. Those trees are awesome. Notice they are ALL different. Each has a different shape, size, and colour. Not cookie cutter shapes to simulate trees.

I agree Hunter, this isn't a what is better kind of topic, but it's pretty amazing what these consoles will be capable of doing.

If joystick/ keyboard/ harddrive modifications are added to these things, PC gaming could be in trouble. Okay, a little worried then.(and I have NO reason to believe this couldn't be done quite, quite easily)

I bought a PS2 4 years ago for $200
I bought a PC 3 years ago for $5000.00
(Yeah I know......... but it came with a geforce ti 4600.......a DVD burner.....monitor....5.1 speakers..... oh yeah and a $1200.00 editing/ capture board with editing software.)

SINCE then I've upgraded and replaced CPU.. Vid card... MOBO

I can't play older games without a deal of hassles on the PC, but on my PS2 I can still drag out some PS1 games and play them if I like.
(R/C Stunt Copter anyone?)

Even if the new consoles come out at $500 it's still a decent gaming system.

Strange enough......... I STILL think the PS2's control pad is the most comfortable.

Now let me get to more pressing matters. Do I go out and buy the Logitech MOMO steering wheel and peddles........or not?

Did you say 9.6 GHZ?

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I have a 1.5 GHZ P4. I feel like the country hick who has just rattled into town in his late production Model T only to discover his cousin's driving a DB9.

Gosh.

I'm using both Logitech Momo and Driving force. I think internally the Driving force is better engineered but the MOMO looks the part. I also feel that the 900 degrees of rotation in the Driving Force is actually a drawback rather than a feature. The MOMO has very good FFB and will transform the GTR, but it does have calibration issues (accelerator pedal) which are well documented and known and fixable without spending money. If I could only keep one I'd keep the MOMO.

MOMOooooooooo.
But I've got a Saitek Evo Forcefeedback stick, and a Saitek X45, as well as a scanner and printer along with my mid tower for my computer... all on my desk.
Where will I put it?
MOMOooooooooo.

I've read posts concerning the MOMO's pedal problem. It didn't seem like TOO difficult of a problem.

Well next week is my B-Day. Looks like I'm getting a present.

I've got a MOMO and Driving Force Pro.Had the pedal problem with the MOMO pedals, which I fixed. But GTR became MUCH more fun with the DFP.
It dosent look as cool, but it out performs the MOMO IMO.With the free driver,it's turn radius is adjustable, plus you get 2 types of shifters, and more buttons(14 total not counting the shifter or paddles. vs 6).And it has a brake that gives more resistance the further you push.
Driving Force PROooooooo. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

This, I think is a key point that will allow console games to surpass PC games (eye candy-wise, at leat) in the next couple of years. Sure, IL2 looks best when run on the latest 'n' greatest hardware, but in order to make money, PC game devs have to spend much time and effort to essentially "dumb down" their games to run on older boxes so as to have the largest customer base.

Having 3x3.2 GHz CPUs does not mean the same thing as "9.6 GHz". As I understand it, each processor will be dedicated to different functions. A lot will depend on how effectively the load is distributed between the CPUs; all that power won't do much good if one processor that's dedicated to graphics is always waiting on data from another doing the physics.

Clock speed is not always the best indicator of overall performance.
Ask anyone with an AMD processor in their PC. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

I'm now imagining a combination of the new Xbox game "Blazing Angels" (using parts of IL2) and the graphics capability of the Xbox360... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

These are the cell processors that were posted about a few weeks ago by . . . Hell, I forget, but anyway . . .

I was just at a Game Stop store, and saw the specs on the X360, and the PS3. PS3 uses the same cell processors, and will have 8 . . . yes, EIGHT cores. These chips are of a completely different architecture, and will not run PC software. All of the software games that are in development have to be designed specifically for the cells. Also, these processors do not run independently . . . hence the word "cell". Inexpensive, yet really powerful, these things are going to change things forever.

Thanks for the link to screenies. I've been wondering for quite some time, now about the new consoles' graphics.
