May 7 1941. (GWX, 1.03)

I was laying in ambush in front of a convoy when I noticed my hydrophone heard a warship I couldnt spot through my scope. Could this be a sub? I fired a steam eel, full speed, at 5 meter depth, when the suspected sub passed in front of my sub at around 400 meter. Jumped on free-cam to track my eel, this is what I saw;

(fooled around with gamma a bit)

The eel exploded just above the sub, behind the conning tower, leaving it immobile. Since there was a storm going on, and my hydrophone couldnt track it anymore because it was laying dead in the water, I decided to stay where I was to wait until it sank or the weather cleared up. Thats when a Black Swan came back from the convoy, found me, and depthcharged me to hell... This was the 3rd sub in a convoy I found, 3 patrols in a row. They tend to be the last in line, at the right side, so If you have a mystery hydrophone contact, shoot an eel (but remember to put it just a meter lower than default depth, so you wll take it down)

Happy Hunting!

Ho do you fire on a hydrophone target?

I waited until he was right in front of my sub, then matched the hydrophone line and the 'torpedo-line' in f6. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thats pretty interesting. I've never encountered enemy subs in GWX, much less a submerged one.

I remember the first time I saw another sub, it was far away so i wasn't quite sure of the nationality. I surfaced and put a shot across his bow with the deck gun, more like a warning shot, and he starts zig-zagging. I assumed he was hostile so I put a fish right fore of the conn tower. As it started sinking I moved in close and realized it was a type VIIB. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Looks like no medals for me this patrol!

But do you know if enemy subs will fire back with torps? Or will they use only the deck gun? Or neither?

If I dont crash, the Universe would take immediate notice of the flaw in its accounting and in a fit of furious anxiety eat itself.

Before the universe notices... can I please win the lottery first ?? pleaaaase http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Surfaced sub will attack with deckgun (sneaked into Lerwich subbase once).

I dint sink it... I was waiting for it to do, but then got nailed by an escort from the convoy the sub was in. I guess submerged AI subs wont surface?

@DrMilton

Its fine by me! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Be careful that you don't torpedo another U-boat.
I'm sure that a number of the sub icons on the map in GWX are other u-boats (at least during the Norwegian campaign they are) .... I would expect to see them around convoys eventually.

Sure is nice to see returning u-boats when setting sail in GWX! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

GWX models the 'insert sub class here' submarine to be on the surface at all times, since the Silent Hunter III game
engine does not allow AI-controlled submarines to surface or dive. It cannot fire torpedoes but will
report your position if it detects you, and use its deck and anti-aircraft guns against you if it detects your
U-boat on the surface.

From the manual.

From the manual. Wrong! GWX 1.3 also models enemy subs submerged. I had one trailing a convoy 30 Nov 41 in AL88.

If it's wrong then the GWX manual is wrong. To verify read pg 184.

Heres an S-CLASS off western France Jan 1940... http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y243/chrisgs/S-CLASS.jpg On the surface, the thought of enemy subs able to dive is exciting, great job.

Can you see any subs in SH3 without mods, or do you have to have GWX? I want to download it, but I am using a laptop with wireless and it would take hours to download the whole package. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif
