I was just reading a great book from the Russian perspective: Attack of the Airacobras. Soviet Aces, American P-39s. As a dedicated bf-109 driver, I was a little annoyed at the jump in performance of the P-39 after the patch, but after reading this book, a number of Russian veterans claimed that the P-39 was superior in both horizontal and vertical maneuvers-at all altitudes. I was surprised to read that!!! I thought that the 109 could outdive and outclimb the airacobra. I guess maybe Oleg knows something after all.

Well Pilots tend to overstate the capibilities of their aircraft, make sure thats what all the other p39 pilots say before believeing just one. Although the p39 was a good aircraft below 16000 feet i believe although go above that it flew like a ton of bricks and climbed like a p47

I agree. In FB, most combats are about 2500m and lower, so it would be in the airacobras best altitude.

I have that book...nice read. Dont forget the P-39 the Soviets wound up with was not the same one the US had. The Russians made it lighter by taking out a lot of stuff.

Which P-39's did the Russians receive?

What "stuff" did the Russians remove?

What P-39's did the US and it's Western Allies use?

How were they different from the VVS P-39's.

N1, Q1 and Q10 for sure /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Armour and guns. Actually the models mentioned above are made specially for the Russians with the modifications done at the Russians request.

The D for sure.

Well they took the most awsome XP-39 prototype and ruined it. They moved stuff around throwing off the balance of the plane making it a spin deamon. They removed the turbo supercharger ruining high altitude performance. They added well over a thousand pounds of armour once again disrespecting the balance of the plane. The extra wieght also helped ruin the climb rate and top speed.

It is no wonder that when facing the awsome Japanese designes at the start of the war the P-39 was relegated to the crap bin. The Russians took the plane and fixed many of the mistakes made by the American army. Mostly just rebalancing the plane and lightening it. It was also well suited for air combat against the luftwaff as a ground support unit (down low).
