I was in the fortunate position of being able to compare FB running on 3 different computer systems. This might prove valuable information for anyone upgrading their system.

System:
---------------------------------------
a) PIII 500Mhz, 384 MB RAM, GeForce 2 MX video card w/ 32MB ram. Compaq motherboard BIOS. AC97 M/B sound.

performance in general: Runs. But quite sluggish. Looking around with mouse produces stutters all the time. Campaign games are so sluggish, they are unplayable.
16 x 16 QMB... soon turned into a furball in treacle. Unplayable.
4 x 4 QMB... Quite sluggish, barely playable.
1 x 1 QMB... Not too bad. the odd stutter here and there.. frame rate still not smooth.
---------------------------------------
b) P4 1900Mhz, 512 MB RAM, GeForce 3 ti500 w/64MB ram. Gigabyte 300 Mhz motherboard, intel chipset. Soundblaster Live 5.1 PCI sound.

performance in general: Runs FB quite well. All campaign missions run smoothly, with the exception of the odd mission which may be a bit sluggish in parts. Frame rates are exceptional, stutter can occur, but quite rarely.
16 x 16 QMB... sluggish, but playable.
4 x 4 QMB... super dandy, quick and smooth.
1 x 1 QMB... like greased ice
---------------------------------------
c) P4 2800Mhz, 1Gig RAM, GeForce 4 MX w/64MB ram.
Gigabyte 333 Mhz motherboard, intel chipset. Soundblaster Live 5.1 PCI sound.

performance in general: Quite obvious what difference the video card makes. Frame update always seems sluggish and poor. Some stutters when looking around with mouse, and lots of objects.

16 x 16 QMB... playable, but frame update is poor.
4 x 4 QMB... plays pretty well.. could be smoother
1 x 1 QMB... better,but frame rate still slowish.
---------------------------------------
c) P4 2800Mhz, 1Gig RAM, GeForce 3 ti500 w/64MB ram.
Gigabyte 333 Mhz motherboard, intel chipset. Soundblaster Live 5.1 PCI sound.

Best playing experience for FB. Framerate always seems maximum. No stutters, period.

16 x 16 QMB... perfect. plays extremely well with fast frame update and smooth mouse look.

4 x 4 QMB... perfect

1 x 1 QMB... perfect
----------------------------------------

Anyone else got any systems they would like to share? I'd be especially interested in the performace of other video cards like 9700, etc.

BUMP... come on, i really want to know how the radeon and other cards compare in these test cases. BTW, I used 1024 x 768 in 32 bit colour, all quality settings maxed except terrian wasnt 'perfect'.

I upgraded to a Radeon 9700Pro soon after buying Il2. So I really haven't played FB on my older card. As of now, my system specs are

AMD Athlon 1.4GHz Thunderbird
Gateway VIA KT133 based mobo.
512 MB PC133 SDRAM
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
40 GB WD HDD
SoundBlaster Live! Soundcard

Settings - Excellent

QMB 1-1 Grea frame rates, absolute joy to play

QMB 4-4 No appreciable change.

QMB 16-16 Still playable, but I do get occasional stutter, especially when I'm firing my guns at point blank head-to-head.

Still, I want to push those framerates even higher, so I'm thinking of upgrading my CPU, Mobo and RAM.

running ati 9500 pro (maximum AA and anis filtering) on a AMD 2400+ with 768mb ram and an audigy I card i find:

- frame rates on excellent settings offline - very good
- perfect settings can be OK but occasionally too sluggish usually at the worst possible time

online ??? who knows changes from day to day

K7S5A MB
AMD 2000+
Nvidea Ti 4200 8x (though only running 4x)
512 mb DDR 2100 RAM
SB Live

Frame rates are fine, running on excellent settings with 32 bit 1024x768. Fraps says mid 40's.

I do get stutters, esp one early before combat, that will last 5 or 6 seconds. The rest are very brief. I have hardware acceleration basically turned off for the sound card.

>Anyway, FB runs quite smooth with no stutters at all in any circumstances with everything at excellent settings, 1024x768x32, FSAA 6X and Ansio 8X.

Excellent settings at 1024x768 w/4xAA with the setup in my sig. Get slight frame rate drops in multiplayer. Otherwise runs damn smooth.
