View Full Version : Jerking cursor, jerking movement, getting worse

Hello,

I had a problem with the cursor movement and movement through the game, but I thought I had it beaten. Alas, as i go further in the game, the problem is getting worse. I managed to get through Toldelmer, although I was getting some of the jumpy movement there. Noloben is now essentially unplayable. When I move the cursor, it takes about three seconds to respond. If I click to move forward, the screen goes through a 360 turn in jumps before it moves forward.

I'm posting my dxdiag file below, but I don't think it will reveal anything. I already know I have tight memory issues, and I'm running on a laptop with not quite enough video card memory. However, I was able to play Uru and Myst IV successfully.

Is a patch needed? Any suggestions? I'm using the current drives as far as I know.

Problem solved again! Somehow I had gotten rolled back to an earlier video driver. I allowed Windows to update my driver to the latest (March 2005) version, and now Noloben runs smoothly.

Whew!

i'm having the exact same problems you described and i don't know anything about drivers. any idea how i could fix my driver ?

thanks much http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sure! Here's how. BTW, I'm using an ATI mobility radeon 7500 video card (IBM ThinkPad), so what you see may be different if you're not.

1. In Windows XP, open the Start menu and choose Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel window, open the Display icon.
3. Click the Settings tab.
4. Click the Advanced button.
5. I don't know what you will see now, but you want to get to Properties. See if you can find that screen. In the ATI control panel, you would click the Adapter tab.
6. In properties, choose the Driver tab. You should see which driver you are using, and several buttons.
7. Click Update Driver. This should open the Windows Update Wizard window.
8. Make sure your internet connection is active, and choose "Yes, this time only" for Windows to connect to the internet.
9. Click Next to continue. It will take some time, so be patient. The program will notify you when it's done, asking you to restart.

Alternatively--If you don't see any of these Control Panel options--go to Windows Update. (Start/Programs/Windows Update.) This will take you to the Windows Update website, and you can allow the website to detect what driver and other updates you need and download them. You don't need to download them all--you can select the ones you want right now--but you should always download and install critical updates first.

I hope this helps!

best way to update your Video drivers is to use a program called "Driver Cleaner" to remove old GPU driver. Then visit http://www.ati.com or http://www.nvidia.com and download the latest driver for your PC..

JayyElle
10-09-2005, 09:52 AM
Yeah, others have said that it's good to uninstall old drivers before installing new ones. But I haven't had any trouble by just updating. The fewer steps the better for me--if it works.

I suppose if updating doesn't work, you could try uninstalling and then reinstalling.

There comes a point where the hassle just isn't worth it...

JayyElle,

Video drivers should always be installed as detailed in Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3471054943/m/9071035163), one of the stickied topics at the top of this Forum. This is especially important with ATI Mobility Radeon chipsets, since as it says on the EoA slipcase regarding video chipsets, "Laptop versions of these chipsets may work but are not supported".

Suggestions:

1. You have only 250 MB of system memory, which is barely enough to satisfactorily run Win XP, let alone EoA in addition. Strongly consider installing at least an additional 256 MB, for a total of 512 MB. Having a full 1 GB would be best. Whether more memory solves the EoA problem or not, your entire system will run *much* better!

2. You currently have ATI's Catalyst 4.2 video driver installed, and might want to install the latest version, found on the ATI website under "CATALYST 5.9 Windows XP - Motherboard/IGP Drivers".

3. Since you're short of memory, try closing all unnecessary applications and processes running in the background before starting EoA. Use Windows Task Manager to close everything except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs:
-- a. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once and then click on Task Manager.
-- b. Select the Applications tab.
-- c. Click on the desired application to highlight it.
-- d. Click on the End Task button at the bottom of the tab.
-- e. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary applications and processes are closed. If you aren't sure which background processes or applications can be closed using Task Manager, check out the AnswersThatWork Task List Programs index (http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm). The most common tasks are described, and which ones are essential and which can be safely closed are noted.
-- f. Play EoA.

Note: DO NOT leave your Internet connection active after doing this, especially if you have only a software firewall. An active connection with no firewall is an open invitation to hackers, who are most assuredly not your friends!

4. Even though it looks like it should be due to the video driver, sound drivers can often cause the sort of problem you're experiencing. There's an updated sound driver for your ThinkPad's SoundMAX chipset (version 5.12.01.5160, 9/11/04), available here (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-41943) from IBM. Be certain to read 1ga239ww.txt regarding installation procedure - which includes uninstalling the existing driver.

BTW, be sure to use the camera (shiny globe in upper right corner of the screen) regularly to save your game progress. If you do so, you can click on the rust-red journal next to the camera to restore a previous game position.

Thanks, Heimdall, you have helped me many times. You're right about that memory--I really do need to put more in the machine. It will cost me another hundred bucks, but I'm going to need it for other applications besides Myst very soon.

Some motherboards with integrated (onboard) video chipsets will detect a new, separate video card and automatically disable the integrated video. If that isn't happening, you'll need to access your system BIOS during bootup, find the line item for the integrated video chipset, and disable it. For details on accessing the BIOS, see your PC user's manual or the PC manufacturer's website.

Or, while disabling an onboard chipset in the BIOS is much preferable, you can also:
-- a. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
-- b. Click on the Hardware tab, and then click on the Device Manager button.
-- c. Click on View > Show Hidden Devices.
-- d. Click the Plus (+) sign next to the Display Adapters category to expand it.
-- e. Select the onboard graphics controller under Display Adapters, and click on Disable.
-- f. Click on OK to confirm.
-- f. After the onboard controller is disabled, close everything back to the Desktop, then shut down (not restart) your PC.
-- g. Power up, and reboot into normal Windows.

sorry if i'm replying late.
you have an ati mobility, am i correct? if so, you can't use ati's standard drivers. you should be going to your laptop/notebook manufacturer and installing their ati branded drivers.
