Ilya and Oleg deomnstrating BoB and doing Q and A at the same time

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e134/SidCheshire/Picture009.jpg

Thanks to them both, and UbiRazz, for making available '46 and BoB available for flying and examination.

'46 was available to fly with TIR. My lad and I had a look and were impressed - I got immersed in chasing B17s in the 183 and he in the Lerche. There was plenty of opportunity to fly at the 3 screens, so we made the most of it. Apparently it will be available on the 15th December...disc and download.

Oleg demo'd BoB as a pre-alpha (IIRC) and showed a flight of Spitfires along with south-coast scenery. It is very different to the IL2 series, much more detailed and realistic. He showed a player-operated Bofors in use at a radar site against raiding 109's. I asked about the realism of the aircraft sounds and, as the game engine is all-new, got the impression that there is an opportunity to include authentic Daimlers and Merlins. I also got the impression that this is going to be a meticulously researched project and am looking forward to it's release.

Also on view were the "Fighting Wood******s" online display team...fantastic stuff http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

One thing that struck me at the event was the split in combat/non combat flyers in flight simming. Ubisoft were the only stand displaying anything in this genre, all the others were dedicated to flying hardware/software and FSX and associated aircraft and scenery. If it is considered that flight sims are only a small proportion of gamers, then combat sims such as IL2 are only a small proportion of the total resources dedicated to flight simming. My view http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'm not sure that I've done Oleg and team justice to the work they are doing, but I spent more time flying and talking there than anywhere else....<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

OK, just got back from the show. I spent 50 minutes talking with Ilya and Oleg. Asked a lot of questions and also videod the complete session.

Oleg Maddox is an absolutely charming and genuine man and Ilya is exactly the same.

The enthusiasm they spoke about this project with really shone through.

So what do we know?

Well, airfields can now be circular rather than just a laid out runway.

Planes can Scramble from Hangars straight out onto the field and into the air.

Planes can now take-off side by side in a multiple scramble situation...looks superb.

The ground detail has been ramped up, and is still only 50% active.

Players can 'Hot Swap' from planes to anti-aircraft positions.

Clouds will now be multi-layered and at much higher altitudes.

Plane skins will be a totally new undertaking. The skin will be released as a template rather than a void, and at the moment decisions are still being made as to whether they will be 2048 or 4096.

Tracer will ricochet of solid objects like it does in gun-camera films.

They are still considering how and whether to implement a Gun Camera built into the .trk.

There will be only one file type, not sure if it's trk or ntrk, but there will be only one for all.

Oxygen masks must be put on by the pilot, you forget, you suffer.

It will be Dual Core compatible, Directx 10 is not in the support at the moment.

Now for something new:

Players will be able to create their own maps, not, I repeat not alter existing ones. Actually create new ones.

A set of tools is to be released soon after BoB release for users to make custom maps and other objects, but it will still not be open source!

There will be One bomber for Italy, 3 for Germany and 1 for Britain (Blenheim).

The UK map is at the moment created to show just above London.

Mission Builders will be able to set manual or automatic in weather settings for Dynamic and moving storm/weather fronts.

I have to say it was a pleasure to talk with Ilya and Oleg, and I never realised he was such a good photographer with his underwater work.
He was impressed with the cameras I was using, s we chatted a little about that.

Now as far as Oleg's stand was concerned, it was a shame that it was sort of out of site, you had to really search to find it, wheras Microsofts Simulator X was dead centre as you walked in!

I felt that it was such a shame that it was hidden around a corner, and therefore wasn't getting the prominence I (we) believe it deserves!

As Sid said above, it was the only Combat orientated stand at the show, everything else was landscape Generation, MFS X based, and Simulator pilots with their custom seats and overhead projectors.

It was a disappointing amount of stalls and very little of variety on show, which is why, in my opinion it was a shame that Oleg's variety was 'tucked away'.

The new Saitek X-52 Pro was on display, and TBH, it was very disappointing. As an owner of the X-52, I looked at it and it looks like a step backwards, and the feel is virtually identical to the X-52, so absolutely no reason to upgrade.

However back to Oleg, absolutely fantastic bloke, as is Ilya, and I'll try and post the video which I took (in orange light, and shot from the hip in true amateur wobbly-cam style...sorry) later on.

Cheers, MP.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Really annoyed I missed the 'heads-up' on this show (if there was one) as I am only about 1.5 hours drive away from the NEC and would have loved to be there. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed yourselves guys, it was a tiring weekend and I got home at 1am last night so I'm a bit out of it right now. Unfortunately my camera's batteries died very early on so I wasn't able to get (m)any pictures but Oleg and Ilya did, so they'll send them over and I'll post them when I can.

I agree that the stand was a fair bit out of the way and after chatting with the organisers and people internally here, who knows what we'll be showing at the next one http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

My eyes almost flew off from their holes when I read this! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Quote from EAF Forum: (which I'm not member of, just found that link on SimHQ)

Some interesting titbits:

1) Mannable flak guns in the first build - to take out those Vulchers!

2) there's going to be hot-swapping of aircraft (and these ground objects) - not sure whether this is offline only or could be online too

3) 128 players online

4) Oleg is simulating an entire weather system in your PC - you'll get updrafts, downdrafts, ridge thermals etc. I seemed to encounter a bit of buffeting when I flew close to the cliffs in the 109.

5) AS well as the usual online game modes there will also be some kind of BF2/WW2 Online-style 'capture the airfield' campaign game mode. This will involve players reducing/destroying an opposing airfields defences/facilities at which point it will switch to the your side and the front line will change. NB: All online game modes will also be playble offline too.

6) AI aircraft in dogfight servers!

7) Individual AI - unlike the four levels of pilot AI in Il-2 there is going to be much more variety in the AI pilots - some good shots, some prone to panic, etc etc to give a variety of combinations so you will feel the pilots you are facing are individuals.

8) Take-off of aircraft now possible in a line abreast scramble (Hurricanes below climbing after take-off)

9) BoB is going to be much more open for modders to create new planes/objects/maps and it sounds like there is a SDK of some sort planned. Oleg however will keep a certificated 'core' of planes that you can switch to when you are online or flying competitions. So, in theory you will be able to add whatever you want offline - but for flying online only the 'core' aircraft will be able to be used.

10) Advanced squadron management

11) Plan to revisit other theatres of WW2 with the BoB engine

NB: Bonus news - RRG Studios as yet unnamed sim is a Korean war sim!!

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

TOO COOL! Such great news! This is gonna be a killer sim!

As for the compromise of open source, i kinda like it, although I prefer non moddable planes...but if its only for offline im happy! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

and using flak---- muah! not since bf1942 have i sat behind one, although i am sure it will be more realistic than the bf1942<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Puma, thanks for the great video
It was good to see Oleg And Ilya showing and talking about BOB. You asked a lot of very good questions, though steam spurting out of strafed steam engines and ricocheting bullets was causing some consternation. I think what Oleg was trying to say that BOB is an evolving game, rather like IL2 and this type of realism will probably develop.
Oleg and Ilya are obviously very proud of their 'new baby' - good on them.
I particularly liked Oleg's passion with the game and one of his references saying that the weather physics were better than any military flight simulator. Oleg will have to get into this market?
Today is the 11th Dec in the land of Oz and the the 1946 release is two more days away - can't wait!

Hi, This is probably the wrong place for this request but....What do I have to purchase to get the whole il2 package, maps addons extra aircraft etc.... I have waited a month because I was told that the whole package was coming out as a set but I havent seen anything advertising this.

It is called IL2 1946. It has been released in some parts of the world, but should be available to all by the 17th. If you are in the US, there are a couple of places to pre-order from. One I know of is www.gogamer.com (http://www.gogamer.com) He has the release date at Dec.17th. From what I understand, he and other online etailers are having to import the game from the UK. Not sure if it will ever make the store shelves here in the US.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
