View Full Version : **** Bong video tracks.

I continue to be amazed at how the memory of **** Bong has been lost. Just out of curiosity I ask people who should know who America's leading Ace was. To my continued astonishment they don't. I ask history buffs, pilots, wargamers etc. and it is very discouraging the answers I get. Chuck Yeager for god’s sake...

Anyway since I have learned how to incorporate video tracks into campaigns I have been busy trying to highlight some of Bong's more memorable missions and exploits.

I have figured out a way to let you see them without flying all the missions in my campaign. It involves making a campaign with a repeated training mission and then repeating that mission with the tracks embedded between the missions.

Such exploits as flying under a bridge in flight school…purposefully flying on one engine in combat to help another pilot escape…going after Washing Machine Charlie (the original one)…shooting down a plane load of Japanese high command (not Yamamoto but a similar mission) etc.

If you are interested in these video tracks let me know and if I get enough responses I’ll upload them in Missions4today or anywhere else that wants them. So far I have 7 tracks.

If anyone knows a better way to play them then in a bogus campaign, please let me know.

Lol, just be glad it doesn't censor Bong, you might have to refer to him as Richard Waterpipe, lol.

That's funny.

Yes, he was an extraordinary pilot, awarded the MoH after his 25th combat success. Who knew at the time his tally would climb to 40.
Did you know that he preferred the head on attack?
It is a real shame that he was killed before the war was over, in an accident back in the states. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

For anyone interested, there is a Richard Ira Bong memorial located at Poplar, Wisconsin. Poplar is located about 20 miles Southeast of Duluth, Minnesota - Superior, Wisconsin. It has been a few years since I've been there, but i'm sure they still have a mounted P-38 like Bong's.

PS Forgot to mention that Bong was from Poplar, Wisconsin, a small town waaayy up in the Northern part of the state.

Yes... imagine my delight- I was travelling between Chicago and Milwaukee, and there it was - a sign that said
"BONG RECREATIONAL AREA."

I thought... 'sounds cool- where am I?'

<EDIT>If proposed legislation passes in California, I guess they may have some out there eventually http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif </EDIT>

yeah, it's sad how he isnt mentioned in any high school class in this country. Nobody knows who he and Tommy Mcquire were.

Marge, a few yrs ago, participated in the dedication of a restored P38 that had a total
reproduction of her photo on hte side.

He was killed test flying a YP-80, as was Don Gentile. Bong was a real combat leader to.

I just read a book called Aces High by Bill Yenne. It highlighted Bong and McGuire.

I found the skins for them.

Not to digress too far from the subject but this is a version of a Marge skin that I tweaked. Bong was the real deal.

<EDIT>Actually, the book indicated that Bong was much more of a freelancer among squads, that he was more of a 'bore site' shooter as opposed to deflection (although he later improved,) and McGuire was the better (or, at least relegated) leader. It was a decent read for anyone who is not already knowledgeable on the SW Pacific theatre.</EDIT>

In a place as Euro-centric as this, it's no surprise you don't hear much about the Pacific aces.

He was an amazing pilot and I have been fascinated by him since I was a kid.

Where can I Download that skin? Is that one included with the Bong campaigns? It looks great.

In fact, I just found hairog36 Bong campaigns at Missions4today. Thanks!! I also read the book Dear Mom, so we have a war. So, yes, I know who he was before this, and actually, I knew before the book too. I knew about McGuire too.

Jim
Yes, I would like to see those Ntracks too.

I got the skin at Flying legends and the creator is ATS42-Defrag. Sorry I don't have a link handy, but that should get you what you want there.

Thanks! I did find it there.... Here is the link for anyone interested:

http://www.flying-legends.net/...number=14&cat_id=492 (http://www.flying-legends.net/php/downloads/listings.php?page_number=14&cat_id=492)

Page 14 in the P38 section.

However, after my last post, I explored the 2_BongCampaign.zip (found at Mission4today from hairog36 and he DOES include a few Maj. Bong skins. The difference is the "kills" on the side. Very nice touch!!

I would love to see about getting those Maj. Bong vids into the campaign. No... I don't know how, but I would look into how it could be done.

As a point of fact, I thought that Maj Bong was so great, that I talked my 10th grade history teacher into letting my class watch a documentary about him...that I courteously provided http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Edit...
That was back in the 80's for those that might think I'm may be young, inexperienced, and impressionable http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I may be young to some, but not to most http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Thank you

Here is a link to the campaigns. However, I am not sure of what is what... There are 3 of them. The first two I "believe" are the same. The third one is a shorter version? The 2nd has MORE P38 files... but, I am confused as the folder names do not correspond with the actual 1946 game P38 folders. I do not have any folders that say P38J-1 or P38J-2 The "short" Bong campaign has NO aircraft skins supplied.

So... I suppose we/I will have to wait to hear back from the creater of the campaign hairog36 who made the first post here.

Here are the campaigns link:

I am excited to start it, but, I would like to see if the videos can be incorporated to the campaign before I start.
