Hi everyone. I discovered this site by accident and been reading through some of the posts here and the mentioning of Silent Hunter III, Grey Wolves, etc. so after delving much deeper about the game, I decided to buy it (and it was cheap too). I haven't played any sub game since Silent Service II on my old ST but from what I've seen so far I'm impressed. I'm still getting to grips with the stock game at the moment with career mode in an old type IID and its certainly a lot of fun, but I will want to start putting in the supermods such as GW as I've heard that it enhances the game even more. Anyways just wanted to say hello. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes, GW (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/9741036534) is fun

but before you get too far, think about some interesting accessory mods:

Welcome aboard Swab! GW supermod is great. There will be GWX coming out soon. It is in beta testing now. So you can wait or get taste of GW with 1.1a. That is up to you. Once you put in GW you will wonder why you played the out of box version to begin with!!!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Got a problem with SH3? Then check out the Community Manual (http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Main_Page) for tips and info on Silent Hunter III

Thanks for the welcome, guys http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The one thing I noticed about SH3 is to have patience. I once spent a whole afternoon on a single patrol and once I found a target I took my time in getting into a good firing position without being detected and it was satisfying seeing my torpedoes hit home. I also have had my fair share of duds as well and it can be so frustrating after such a long patrol and not scoring any hits at all but I guess that was what it was like for real. But I think the most frustrating thing of all for me is the aircraft. Especially when the seas are too rough and can't man the flak gun. But I'm still enjoying it all the same.

You can alter some config files so you can man your deck & flak guns in heavy weather, but I don't do that since it's not very realistic. In heavy seas, just dive away if you see a plane.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I disagree, to a certain point. The stock game is ridiculously biased, so editing a bit in order to use the deck/flak guns isn't cheating too much. What I consider "cheating" by the game is how you can be sailing along in the worst of weather and a plane finds you [not counting later years when the planes have radar.] No matter how atrocious the weather, the planes still fly.

The flak guns on most boats are mounted at the same height as the bridge and should be able to be manned. There's no reason why a man on the bridge can't move over a few feet and get on the flak gun. Just because the deck is awash doesn't mean the flak gun is, but the game considers it so. That's why I edit and use my discretion as to whether it is too rough to man the guns.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I doubt that in heavy seas a uboat is a stable platform for flak guns, but they could indeed be manned without trouble.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I'd agree with that. My reason for editing the game files is for those "in between" occasions, when it's a bit too rough for the deck gun but not quite so for the flak gun. It just galls me sometimes that I'm totally helpless while Pilot Officer Tommy is able to fly the skies with impunity.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Welcome anzaq41! It's good to see that people are still discovering the joy that is SHIII. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

BTW, K61 is right. If the weather is so bad you can't use your deck or flak guns (IE: heavy rain or thunderstorm), planes shouldn't be as big of a problem as when the weather is nice.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

OUt of curosity, is it worth upgrading to GW if you don't have an uber computer?

Basically what I got is a 2.8ghz, with 512 ram and a 9250 (128ram) video card - which I can't seem to upgrade becuase my POS computer doesn't have an AGP

Something else I forgot to add was that in the "in-between" weather you should be able to still use your flak guns on small vessels such as the trawler or tug. In other words: it is a bit too rough for the deck gun, but your flak gun is still reachable, and even though harder to control it would still be manageable to fire on a surface target. I've used my 20mm AA gun in moderately rough weather to sink fishing boats, trawlers and tugs. I'm not talking about weather with monster waves swamping the bridge, but weather where the deck is awash, but the waves aren't high enough to break over the bridge. In such conditions the game by default rules out both the deck gun and the bridge-level flak gun. This of course refers to the type 7's. On the small type 2's the 20mm flak gun is on the main deck. I don't cheat and use that if the weather is too rough for using a deck gun [if the type 2 had one, that is!]<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
