View Full Version : Why won't they go down?

Now I'v worked out the falling behind the AI planes at takeoff (thanks for the tips) I got another problem.

After meeting fighters for the first time in the missions and not getting close to a kill, I went to quick mission and setup a 109 for me and a Lagg for the enemy (both early versions). Put him on rookie for practice.

So after a lot of battles I'm visually tracking a lot better and following him and getting on his six but....
he won't go down!

Set cannons at 150M conv and opened up for a good second at 150M (he was flying straight) and bits went flying but he flew merrily along. Eventually cannons were used up and MGs did **** even with more stuff flying off him.

Low deflection shots are meant to be better as they are easier but the kills I have gotten have been with a decent defection (when I managed to hit). So what do I do, expecially if he is flying pretty straight you don't get a deflection. Good defense for him is to fly straight, let me empty all my guns until I'm out and then he can go home.

I'm getting a little disheartened as I can imagine with ave or better pilots you'll have to work to get just one good shot but right now I don't see the point it's not going to do anything

Thanks
P.

My experience is that until you get within 100 m, cannons and MG's don't do $hit! Try to get a little closer before blasting him. Hope that helps!

I remember it took days before I could shoot anything down in IL-2.

I suggest you start off with some easy stuff, then work your way up to more difficult scenarios. 109 is kinda hard b/c of its light firepower, and LaGG-3 is a tank until it gets a real DM in the patch.

Maybe try taking a P-39 or Hurricane against some unarmed bombers. Once you splat a few hundred bombers you should be getting the hang of it, and will be able to deal with fighters more effectively.

Then on the second day, it was made bug free, and He saw that it was good.

what 109 ??

if its an Emil or F2 the cannons are not much bigger than machine guns

if you just want the satisfaction of a kill in a LW plane then take the G6as with the mk108 nose cannon or even better gunpods OR for even more firepower take a fw190a8 with a pair of mk103's in pods http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

not exactly dogfight configuration but if you hit a lagg with a couple of mk103 it is going down i guarantee it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And your pit will be shaking all over the place too ...

Try a laye model Hurricane, give yourself 3 other guys in your flight and chose 2 Hartmanns 109's at Ace.

Tell your wingman and the 3rd and 4th planes to engage and stay above the fight.

Then swoop down on a loose 109 when he is trying to return to the fight.

I've found this easier than taking on bombers for gunnery practice in a QMB, you can fire ahead of the enemy in very short bursts and let him fall into the spray. Best of all, a shot from above will get more damage on hin than one from his 6.

LW big cannon planes dont shake near as bad as the VVS ones like the lagg 3IT or Yak 9T/9k.

A compromise while staying with the 109's is the F4 or better still G2 as they have considerably more punch with little disadvantage in terms of nimblemess and handling.

The F-4 or the G2 are the best LW plane ( I prefer the G2), but if you have aiming dificulties try an 190, but the Headshake is enormous, and stalls rather easily.
But remember, when flying LW planes,NEVER TURN. If you have to, do it in the vertical. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I forgotted,.. for training, try destroying some Pe-8(empty or not) with a 109F2 aor aHurry, this way you will learn to shoot at precise points,to destroy your enemy as fast as possible.

one thing not mentioned yet. slide off to the side a little. try to rake the enginge & cockpit. target presents more area for you to hit than directly from his 6 o'clock & you can hit vital components which is important with 109F against Lagg3.
