View Full Version : Anyone tried these two LCD monitors?

I've been on the lookout for a 19" LCD monitor for my son. A local dealer showed me two models that were within my price range and appeared to meet the required specs:

Samsung 931BF at A$498.00

ViewSonic VX922 at A$420.00

Both have the same response time (2ms) but the Samsung has better contrast (2,000:1 vs 650:1).

Does anyone here have any experience with either of these two models? Any comments or recommendations?

Of course, these are not the only 19" models around by any means, but it's a starting point in my search.

I've owned 4 Samsung LCD monitors (currently using the 204B 20.1") and just this weekend got a shiny new Samsung Plasma HDTV. Let me just say this, you can't go wrong with Samsung.

I second the Samsung, I have the previous model to that one, and I have been very pleased with it. Definately get your moneys worth from them!

I have the 930BF model with 4ms. The Il-2 series looks fantastic on it. As do all the other games I own. Had it around 6 months now and problem free.

Another bonus for me which likely may not apply to you is the lack of radiated heat. I came from using a Sony HMD 400 CRT and I could almost bake on top of it. My home is in the middle of the Sonoran desert and its hard enough to keep daytime temps pleasant in this south facing room when its 112 outside. I certainly do not miss flying for 4 or 5 hours with my face 2 feet from an easy bake oven.

I think your son would be thrilled with the Samsung

Looks like the Samsung is definitely the one to get then!

Thanks for the replies, guys. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Any 19" monitor for that price better be good http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Using a Dell 19" E193FP for just under $200 and it works great... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I've checked around different dealers (on line and off, around Australia) and the going prices for 19" LCD monitors of that sort of quality, to those specs, are all in the 400-500 or so A$ range.

Yeah, thanks stansdds.

I've pretty much made up my mind already, in favour of the Samsung, based on what others here have said. Your vote adds weight and confirms my decision!

So would there be any advantage in going bigger, i.e 20" or 21" TFT`s ?

Sure would, but the A$498.00 Samsung is what he's getting . In fact, it's been ordered and I'm supposed to be picking it up in a few days. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The sort of thing you're talking about would cost a lot more than that; maybe a grand, maybe more, here. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Yeah, I got that impression. The Viewsonic is 78 bucks cheaper but we'd probably end up regretting it and wishing we'd got the Samsung.

I think what I've got my son is a good balance between size, performance, quality and cost. And I expect it to last him into at least his first couple of years at high school (he's 11 yrs old now). http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As the expression goes, "you get what you pay for". I don't think you are going to be disappointed in your choice.

Hi guys,

My son has been running the Samsung 19" SyncMaster 931BF for a day or so now.

Everything looks pretty good.

If there was any criticism to be made, it would be regarding viewing angles as I notice that if you look at the monitor anything other than pretty well straight on, the image appears darker/lighter or whatever.

However, since this is a PC monitor and not a television, and a single user will sit looking 'straight on' anyway, I guess that doesn't matter much.

Wouldn't recommend it for watching movies (and we've got TV's for that anyway) but otherwise we are very pleased with it.

Thanks for the link, HARRIER_401. That unit looks like pretty good value as well! (I assume the price is in $US).

Edit: Just checked one of the more competitive dealers in Eastern Australia (they tend to be a little cheaper than where I live, in the West). They are selling that Acer model for A$635.00 - just a bit outside my budget, as the max I was prepared to spend this time was A$500.00. Nevertheless, still a very good unit. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
