Was flying some D-9 lates against some yak 3's 4vs4 offline tonight. Was a pretty good fight and 2 of my guys caught it in the begining. So I kept menouvering into head on situations with my wing man keeping my speed and flamed 3 that way. Looking around for the fourth Yak I spotted him heading east smoking and climbing so I Engaged my MW-50 and pursued. After a long chase I caught up an just as I was about to fire I noticed his horizontal stabaliser was missing. So figuring he wasnt much of a threat I coasted along side of him to get a better look at the damage inflicted. To my suprise the canopy was gone and the pilots seat was empty!
I was chasing a ghost ship flying along perfectly just climbing. So I backed off, pulled in behind it and gave it a short burst setting it ablaze. It slowly spiraled down why I pondered how amazing this all was.

Were there any real life accounts of this happening? If so I wonder how far the got before finally crashing.

The whole stab was missing? DM graphic error?
I had some bombers set for shooting up once and the last one flew sideways for a long time just taking hits.
It's very hard to hit a plane that flies sideways... how many patches ago that was though I can't remember.

I've had this happen to me in co-ops. I've lost control, bailed, and my plane was slowly climbing to the moon by the time the co-op ended.

I remember this happening to me, i was intercepting a b17 with my FW190 in a head on pass and dived a little too late. Lost my stabiliser and he lost an alerion. It still flew so i took it home and tried to land but wrecked my gear instead.

It's happened to me as well, and I've seen it happen to the AI a few times. I had to bail out of an IL-2 that continued on for nearly 10 minutes, in a slow circle that would dive and them climb, over and over. It finally lost enough altitude to belly land, hit a building and finally blow up.

Me, too. It happens from time to time, but not often. You'll spot an abandoned, damaged aircraft just flying along, and it will just keep going until it either hits something, runs out of fuel, or is shot down by you (AI won't touch it).

One way I've managed to bring down B-29s in Japanese planes is aiming for that big vertical stabilizer. It takes forever but they will eventually spiral down and crash- problem is the Ai keep stealing my kills! LOL

Happened to me in a P-40 not too long ago. It did loops for about 15 minutes before it lost enough energy and crashed.

I remember doing this way back when in an La-7. Bailed out, and watched it do a slow spiral upwards. Watched it for about 3 minutes before I got bored http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

There were some real-life incidents. There is one story (not sure how true it was) of a B-17 whose entire crew minus the tail gunner bailed out over the continent. The plane supposedly made a crash-landing in England where the gunner was amazed to find out no one was flying the plane.

"Got Track"!

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif I was forever wondering why I wasn't getting kills when I had clearly shot up a plane and seen the pilot bail. You don't get them till the plane hits the deck.

I once follwed a P-40 down. That did a quick zoom up then down, then up, then down/up/down. This went on till I got bored and cancelled mission.
I probably wasn't going to be credited that one until it run out of fuel and crashed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif
