I want to upgrade my 9800. Who's currently handling OpenGL best, NVidia or ATI. I'm going to purchase a BFG 6800 Ultra OC or an ATI X850XT PE this week (AGP).

I'm not trying to start a war ... there have been some excellent threads on this in the last months but I can't get a search to work. I posted a thread in General two days ago ... with some pros, cons and specs. http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/8591099813

I want to be sure to purchase the best card for my money for IL2/AEP+PF. I've read what I can online ... but no where about running the sim I run and love the most.

I have been an ATI fan for a long time, but this time I think I am going NVidia.

I had an 8500LE 128MB which I put in my wife's computer for her SIMS 2 when I upgraded to an ATI 9800 Pro.

Not really disapointed with ATI but now, I think the wife will get the 9800 Pro when I get a BFG 6800 Ultra OC PCI-E & AMD64 3800+ Newcastle on a DFI Lan Party s939 SLI. Will pickup a second 6800 Ultra end of summer.

I know ATI can be faster in many other games, but FB/AEP/PF is the only game I really play (offline only), so I figure that if Maddox Games developed & optimized this flight sim on/for NVidia, (+ some more advanced eye candy only on NVidia), then it's probably smart to buy the same manufacturer's card the game was developed on and optimized for.

My 2 cents.

My rig:
AMD Athlon64 3500+
2 GB RAM
Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS
eVGA Nvidia 6800 Ultra PCIexpress

Yes, I can run perfect settings with good frame rates if water = 1. With water = 3 it will still run, but there is a big frame rate hit and heavy action such as that seen on the tracks "The Black Death" and "Kamikaze 02" the frame rates drop to 8 or 9. I am pretty satisfied with water = 1 as it looks better than any other sim I have flown.

Thanks so much guys! Excellent help ... thanks again! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes, both ATI and BFG came out with 512 cards .... but there $800 to 900 US ... above my price range.

Today Zipzoomfly dropped the BFG 6800 Ultra OC to $439 US with free 2 day shipping. The Best I can find on the ATI X850XT is $489 and $12 ground.

One last thing .... I keep reading on sites that the X850XT runs hot (finger can't be held to back of boards heatsink when gaming). While the 6800 does not vent outside as the 850 does ... it's may generate lass heat inside the case?

Tomorrow afternoon I buy. Most likely the BFG ... but as I see it I really can't go wrong with either!

The right upgrade for your PC is entirely dictated by what you have now. Post this question along with a copy of your diagnosis over in Community Help for a better answer than you've been given here. If you need instructions on how to post a diagnosis, see Luckyboy's Guide For Complete users.

You should wait! I have a 9800pro and just ordered a xt850PE! It should be here in a few days, I will install it and post on the improvement, if any, and this will help you spend your bucks better than I did maybe. S!

New drivers seem to have helped my system. If you do go with a 6800 Ultra, you will have to experiment with drivers to get stability and good frame rates. I'm now using 71.89 and they seem to run this card well, but testing continues.

If your not afraid to OC, get a 6800GT and oc to ultra speeds (or more) to save more money. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

From what I have seen in reviews both cards have about the same speed. ATI faster in one game, Nvidea in the other. The only real diffirence is that GF has pixel shader 3.0, and the Anti analising of ATI is faster, and smoother.

I have the same problem as you. My 9800 pro died last week so I need a new one. Sad that ATI prosponed their new range of gfx cards, so I'll have to go with current generation gfx cards. I am leaning towards ATI, because of the AA.

Ya, same deal here jeroen ... 9800 going out. If only ATI had come out, or was near release, with the X900 series. (and how soon they'd be out for AGP??)

I ended up getting a BFG 6800 Ultra OC for $439 US with a $40 rebate and free 2 day shipping ... so the last great top of the line 425MHz 6800 series for $399 effectively.

I kept going nuts with the speed of the 850 at high res + AA versus the 6800's 3.0 shaders. That almost balanced each card out (not to use the 3.0 in PF ... but reference to future ease of use as mentioned at HardOCP in a review of the X850XT). Also the two main sims I fly are IL2 and FS9 ... and the 6800 is very good at FS9 rendering

In the end it came down to cost and delivery ... the BFG at $439 ($399) & free 2 day shipping ... or the ATI at $499 + shipping. (if I could get it for that ... most wanted $499 to $540)
