Hey guys.......I just joined up today and had a few questions about the IL-2 series.

first off i just wanted to say hello , and this place looks to be a really cool and informative site. i have spent the last few days on here reading up on all the info on the sim.

there seems to be a ton of info , but most of all the "beginner stuff" was probably already talked about years ago , and now that most of you have settled in , i get kind of lost on where i should start.

I don't fly "real" airplanes , but i do fly the very large RC airplanes in areobatics , such as the Yak-54 , extra's (260 and 300's) giles 202's , katana's and ect........

It's a cool hobby and i plan on competeing some time this next summer. the plane i'm building now will have a 115cc engine (BME) swinging a 26"-28" prop.

anyways...about this sim.........

I noticed there are two different versions of this sim ( i could be wrong?) , with an older one and a newer one.

the older one and the original one would be IL-2 Sturmovik , and the new version being "forgotten battles.......Is this correct?

and is this correct.??

IL-2 Sturmovik has only add -on called "ACE" Expansion pack"

then the newer version came out called "Forgotten battles" , with upgrades such as ...."pacific fighter's" , "Ostfront" , "Combat over eastern europe" , "operation barbarossa " ( there is also a SE edition of barbarossa...what's speacial about it? ) and the last confusing add on is "battle over europe" (it doesn't say eastern eruope?)

I have looked at a few different bundles of these to buy , and came across a "Gold edition" and "Complete edition". The "complete" pack seems to have more , but with both , i would still need to get the original IL-2 Sturmovik right?

Just trying to figure out what i need to get here. I'm looking at getting the saitek X-52 set up with the pedals , but wonder if i should wait for the pro version?

And any advice would be appreciated BIGTIME!!

Thanks for reading my post and hope to meet all of you online.

THANKS

JEFF

OK ...

Ostfront" , "Combat over eastern europe" , "operation barbarossa " are all private mission campaign addons not official products.

In terms of official products.

There is the original IL2 which is quite dated now and has no upgrades but is still playable though the flight models are trickier to fly and actually for unfathomable reasons has better sound than the current series.

Then there is the current IL2 series which consists of:

IL2 Forgotten Battles
IL2 AEP
IL2 Pacific Fighters
IL2 PE2
Il2 46 (released in a few weeks)

You could currently by IL2 complete DVD to get FB/AEP/Pacific-fighters and then by the PE2 and 46 addons seperately.

However I seriously recommend you wait a week or two and get the new Il2 1946 ultimate DVD which will have everything on it from Forgotten Battles throught to the latest (not yet released) 1946 pack.

Just get the "Platinum" Edition, it has everything in one package along with all patches up to 4.04m (It is short only the pay 4.05 Pe-2, which is just under $20.00. You do not need to go 4.05m necessarily as many on-line servers have remained 4.04m and if you're flying only off-line then compatibility is never an issue).

The order was:
Il-2 Sturmovik
Aces Expansion Pack
Forgotten Battles
Pacific Fighters

The rest, such as Battle Over Europe, are supplements with some aircraft skins and campaigns. They are unnecessary. Get them if you want, but you can go without ... I have.

I have 4.05m (I had no problem paying for it, but that "Boonty Box" download manager was a pain, but I have wiped it from my computer so it is no longer an issue), but I have to switch versions before I go on-line. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif It's easy, really.

Hi Jeff, welcome to your new addiction (As soon as you start trying out online flying say goodbye to your social life) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hold off a couple of weeks and buy the full DVD with all 3 games and all patches and addons.

Its coming out at the start of December and includes the new Luftwaffe '46 addon and the whole merged series so far (3 games, 3 addons and lots and lots of patches with free planes/maps etc)

You will then have the most up to date full version with every patch and addon (300+ planes) so that you can get straight online. (Right now a full reinstall means 3 games, 2 addons and about 6 patches at 20mb to 140mb. The new DVD will make it a simple one-stop install. I am buying it just for that even tho I have the whole series. (Gotta keep Oleg working hard http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

Forget the AI, find a freindly server and fly online, much more fun and you will learn 10 times as fast.

Send me a pm if you need help setting things up. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Have fun<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hello Jeffro. And welcome.

There are three games. One is the old IL-2 Sturmovik. There's no addon for that one(aces expansion pack is for forgotten battles), except few free patches. Is still a great game but pretty much dead online.

Forgotten Battles is the new game. It has all the planes and features from the original Il-2 and a heck of a lot more. for this one you can add "aces Expansion Pack", Pacific fighters, Pe-2 Addon.

And the third one "Pacific fighters" can be played as a stand alone game. It has only planes that came with this title and not much from the FB or AEP or IL-2 except some planes that flew in the Pacific. But you can merge this one with Forgotten Battles and Aces Expansion Pack and get the big monster game with 200 fliable planes.

There are few more or less "complete" collections you can buy, but I would wait a week or two. We are getting the new <span class="ev_code_YELLOW">IL-2 1946 DVD </span> that is going to have Forgotten Battles + Aces Expansion Pack + Pacific Fighters + Pe-2 Addon +Sturmoviks over Manchuria + 1946 addon + all the patches in between. In other words everything that was made in this series of games in one single DVD, so you won't have to go buy so many of them and add patches in between.
One monster game with over 300 planes with 228 of them flyable.

If i was you I would order the big one that comes out on eight of December.

Edit: dang guys you are fast http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

JEFF

AEP = Aces Expansion Pack, an official addon for Forgotten Battles

Pe2 = A recent download only addon that included the Soviet Pe2 bomber

They'll both be part of the DVD package.

As the other guys have said, definitely wait for that to be released.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

AEP is Aces expansion pack and is an add on for forgotten battles.
IL2 was stand alone.
Forgotten Battles was a new version that contained IL2 and many new planes/maps/object.
Than came AEP for FB.
Than PF (Pacific fighters) it could be purchased stand alone or as an add on for FB/AEP.
There was another paid add on called Pe-2 but as others have mentioned in a short time we will be able to buy A new version of the game that includes everything past and many new things and will cost around 40.00 US I think.
Stay tuned to the forums in the coming weeks for more information on price and availability and where to buy.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hello and welcome,

This really is the best WWII flight sim combat game you can find on the market right now. Nothing before has been anywhere close to as detailed, realistic, or as historic as this. The series has its detractors and its share of problems but its an overall excellent experience.

More recently they have delved into the realm of the what-if aircraft so we've got a few fun experimentals that never flew or some post war production aircraft in the new 1946 addon that is coming out.

My suggestion, if you want it all, is to grab the new addon that is coming out. Its coming in a collectors edition DVD release with everything all in one grand package plus the brand new content. This way, if you do decide to go online...you'll have the option. Or at the very least you now have a plethora of campaigns and missions coming by default.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hello Jeff and Welcome!!!

You will find just about anything here on the forums. They are pretty diverse. There are a lot of guys that fly online. I myself only fly offline, but to each his own. There is information and new programs and things that will bennafit you no matter what your forte is. Don't be afraid to ask questions. The only dumb question is an unasked one. There are some other programs you might give a try too, but that is after you get initially set up with the "Supa DVD" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yes Sir.........that's what i'm gonna do is wait for that "SUPA"DVD and get everything installed at once.

Also..what Flemgunner wrote above.....where will the new 46 DVD be released at? If i could get everything set up and be flying around the middle of DEC then i'll be a happy man.

I can't beleive how helpfull this site is....unbelievable. I've joined a a few other online game/sims over the years , and most all those message boards had some really good guys on there , but most we're crowded with lil' punk kids trying to start trouble.

I do have a few new questions now that i think about it.

1.) when you fly online , do you join up in a specific sqaudron/company and try and complete certain missions? and if that's right....do you fight other online player's as well.....ir the computer AI fighter's? Are the AI very good?

2.) I also looked at some of the custom made skin/paintjobs on this site and some of them are unreal! Are the airplanes , objects , missions and ect pretty easy to install.

3.) what are some good pointer's for a good install? The reason i'm asking is this......I'm going to be building a new computer over the next few months , maunly just for flying around on the sim/ playing some other games , while my computer i have now , will get polished up a bit , and be a work horse for my bussiness. Will i lose alot of stuff when i reconfig a new comp , or is everything able to save from older files?

Thanks guys!!

Just my 2 cents worth... the correct order of "programs" is listed in Gateway's post so disregard this one...

Wait for the upcoming DVD IL2 1946... it will have everything patch up to 4.06m meaning you will get for about $50:

FB+AEP+PF+PE2+46

This is a lot cheaper than bying the Ultimate DVD for 40$ + PE2 for 20$ (download) + 46 for $20-$40 (download)...

The Il2 46 DVD will get all of the above on DVD WITHOUT the BoontyBox...

I have the Seitek X-52 (actually I have 2 of them... an extra incase one craps on me during houres were stores are closed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) but I would wait for the PRO version as it is beleive to fix a few "quirts/bugs" out... like an adjustable spring to "stiffen up" the stick and a lesser deadzone... but don't get me wrong the current X-52 is still a very good stick...

Enjoy this sim and welcome aboard...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Not quite right, Zoom http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

'46 should also contain Sturmoviks over Manchuria. '46 is supposed to contain "all previous content", and will be version 4.07 according to information I have seen. Since Sturmoviks over Manchuria should be version 4.06, that means that '46 should contain-

Il-2 Sturmovik:Forgotten Battles
Ace's Expansion Pack
Pacific Fighters
Various updates and patches leading up to version 4.04m
Pe-2
Sturmoviks over Manchuria
Il-2 "1946"

If you are in Europe there are many places where to order it online.
Like www.play.com (http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/3251021/IL2_Sturmovik_1946/Product.html). Is already listed and you can preorder it.
For North America we don't know yet but most likely www.gogamer.com will find a way to get it even if is not officially released in US.
They did the same with the Pe-2 addon. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Software DVD's and CD's are not region restricted so the DVD installed in your PC in US should be able to run it with no problem even if the DVD was made for UK market. The Pe-2 addon imported by Gogamer was made for UK market as well.

Question 1

Online we play at HYPERLOBBY (http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/3251021/IL2_Sturmovik_1946/Product.html)
You download the Hyperlobby client and install it. With that "Lobby" you can find many servers and may players online. There are two ways you can play this game online. COOP. You play mission oriented in a controlled environment with and against human and AI. And dogfight servers where you play against Human controlled only aircraft. The ground/Naval stuff like ships, tanks trucks AAA guns are static but controlled by AI. They can't run away but heck can they shoot. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Question 2

Skins are really easy to install. you download them and drop the ".bmp" file in the skins folder of the respective aircraft. this is in your game folder/paint Schemes/ skins/ the aircraft you got the skin for.

Question 3
You'll find all you need here:

Yep forgot about the 4.07 (Sturm over Manc)...
you are absolutely right...

About the "accessories" for this SIM other than the actual program...a good stick and rudder pedals (a lot better than a twist stick IMHO) you will want to get one of these:

http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/

Track IR is a head tracking divice that let your pilot look in the direction that you actually turn your head... meaning no changing views with a hat switch or the keyboard...

If it means spending less of the X-52 pro and bying a regular X-52 (or even an EVO) it could be a good trade off to start with....

Beleive me... TRACK IR will change the way you see this game... and you will be an INSTANT ADDIC...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

To answer your questions ...

1) There are several online squadrons you can join. They do online coops, or just plain maylee dogfighting. It kindof varies. OR you can just play on Hyperlobby. I don't have the link as I don't fly online, but there are others here who can help you out there. So you can download hyperlobby, or you can join a squadron. There is a REALLY great program called "Paul Lowengrin's DCG (Dynamic Campaign Generator)". Alot of online guys use it for their coops. I can tell you more if you are interested. It replaces the original offline/online campaign generator.

You can fight AI online and offline. In some instances, the AI is Uber. But that is a whole other thread ...

2) Yes, they are verry easy to install. For this game you will become very familiar with your C:Program Files/... folder if you aren't already. We can give you some great sites to download skins, missions, nose art, replacement markings, replacement campaign generator, music, movies ...

3) you are going to get a million different answers here, but for me organization is the key. I have a folder on my desktop (or in your IL2 folder if you wish) where I download everything. I have that folder catagorized, ie (missons, campaigns, skins, misc programs, music ...). It is already sorted, and I have all like things together. It makes installing those downloads a heck of a lot faster. But do whatever works best for you http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Hello http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif If you have more than 1 partition its worth installing in another partition other than C: as when windows falls over you don`t have to reinstall Il-2 again!
