You squeeze off one round......bang
You're night blinded!
How did these guys deal with this in combat?
I realize fighter planes didnt go up much at night but try flicking a Bic in your face outside at night, you cant see jack after that!

Wierd huh? Maybe the muzzle flash is over modeled. Or maybe they started that cool sun glasses at night thing.

The muzzle flash is undermodelled IMO. It needs to be at least twice the length of the plane. Indeed, many pilots in WW2 used the flames from muzzle flashes to down plnes. This method accounted for 96% of plane losses in WW2.

I suppose you could close your eyes when you pulled the trigger.

Fighters didn't fly at all at night. At night only custom nightfighters flew. Bombers went up at night, but had a hard time finding their targets.

Yup muzzle flashes are way overdone.. MK108 is particularly funny, the flash is as big as the plane /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Try flying a FW190 where you are not able to see over the control panel and firing your guns...might just as well have a sack over your head!!

Not at all???

Both the 109 and 190 flew Wilde Sau missions. The 190 only had plates added to screen the flames from the exhaust from the pilot. Later, 262s flew NF missions and these were without radar.

Yeah pilots could be blinded, and many 'regular' fighters were used at night. I recall reading/hearing hurricane pilots talking about how bright the flast from the guns were, and that they would have to close their eyes or only fire for a short bit to not get too blinded. Never heard anything from the german pilots though as that would be interesting since they had nose guns as opposed to wing guns.

SOME fighters had special muzzles on the guns (take a look at some of the Bf-110G nose cannon pics). Specialized night fighters tried to relocate the guns so that muzzle flash wouldn't blind the pilot (see the ventral gun trays on the He-219, some add-on trays for the 110G, and, for different reasons, and "Schrage Musik" installations.

Think i came up with the solution fer us....once your lined up with the target......turn your monitor off.

Leave it up to a Swede to solve the problem!!!!

HC, the doctrine calls for closing your eyes and screaming like a little girl.
Why do you think HD got that far?

Although muzzle flash is overmodelled for some reason, real muzzle flash at night can make shooter blind for a while.

And night flight is easy enough in FB. It's always bright night and you can even increase your gamma setting. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Wasn't there also a song in the 80's called "My nose cannon's so bright, I gotta were shades."?
