View Full Version : Do I upgrade to a type IXC or keep my VIIC

I've had my trusty type VIIC since 1940 and have invested in new engines, batteries and hydrophone for it.

The question is, do I stick with this type and keep investing in it (looks to be some sweet conning towers available next year)or should I upgrade?

It's late 1941 at the moment, the USA will be getting involved, it would be nice to get in on operation drumbeat over on the east coast when it starts.

Take the type IXC mate, dont worry about the slow dive time.

If you really want to go to the USA, take the IXC. Is almost the best IX you can get. Remeber that you'll get looooooong patrols!

Otherwhise, keep your VIIC.

Yeah...go for the IX: great range, lots of torps aboard, many gadgets to install. You will be able to go hunting almost anywhere.

Couldn't agree more with the previous posts. I am just now to June 1940 in my new career (my second) - and I really, really miss my IXC boat! Come on 2nd Flotilla!!

I wouldn't mind getting a IXC if I didn't HATE travelling around...

I wish the TC was twice as fast. 2096 would be good.

You'll worry about the slow dive time soon enough (1943) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I cant stand leaving the ports where the IXCs are located, cant use TC because the depth is so shallow.

yeah what he said get to 43 and you will be crying for your VIIC back http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Seriously though i still have my type 7 this career bc the last one ended early in 43 after a few patrols with the type IX. Its a cow plain and simple and if you want to get the type XXI keep your current sub.
The long dive time of the type IX isnt what i hate. Its its lack of response to steering and the horribly long patrols. Do the math and you can actually fire off more torps in type VII than The type IX in the same career length bc you end up at base much more often. Also, although i love the bigger deck gun , its almost useless in 43 and later.

I like the IX's best but I refuse to do those rediculas patrols. I just go out to the good hunting grounds and use my torps there. I can usually sink enough shipping so that I still get 1500+ renown. It is intended just to use torpedoes though. It has a deckgun but not much ammo for it. So basically all you've done when trading is you trade deckgun ammo for more torpedoes. Good trade IMHO.

Or just transfer to italy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I dunno what I miss out on in the atlantic war, but the italian missions are pretty short, and even the nice boats travel on their own. Didnt know the weather was that bad in there tough http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

In my first campaign I transfered from Lorient to La Spezia...I just made two patrols and quickly returned to the Atlantic battlegrounds. I just didn´t like the mediterranean.

What is the difference in the Flak arrangements for the Typ-VIIC and Typ-IXC? That would certainly affect my choice. From what I can see, they are both equivalent with the later conning towers, but I don't know for sure. Does anyone have any experience with this?

S VIIC_41, get the IXB or C... either one, but the C gives you longer range.

If you done want to travel so far, find all the ships you can or a convoy. Expend ALL your torpedos and send a report to base. BdU will then order you to RTB. And, you will still get your renoun.

Trydan, the IXB and C have more flak guns. Plus more torpedos.... 21 in all. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

In 1942 you can get IX-D2, It costs 9000 renown points. The boat has 26 torpedos and you also get a Flak 35 Vierling, which comes in handy for being such a big boat.

I supose you can keep your Typ-VIIC until the D2 appears.

I still would go to the IXB, just for the torpedo load compared to the VIIC...

By 1943 you would just have to chage back to VII. Evading dedicated hunter-killers from 1943 onwards with VII? You need more luck than skill. Evading them in lumbering whale like IX? You need a miracle.

So is it not possible to survive the war?

Once you have the Type IX, just transfer back to a Flotilla with the base you like best. You will keep the type IX.

As for surviving in a type IX after 1943... sure you can. Have a little faith 'grass hopper' http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Be smart, be patient, understand the opposition and your strengths vs. his weakness. It can be done... at least well into 1944. I have lasted that far anyway. - At a certain point though, it is less about sinking ships for big numbers, than it is about survival. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Happy Times... it aint.

I don't know if this is true or not but it seemed like I got the renown back for the upgrades when I changed my VII -> IX so you basically just transfer the uppgrades to the new sub.....

I guess that if you have plenty renown then you could go VIIB -> IXC -> VIIC if you think diving is slow.

To be able to continue deal out specializations I used this path

VIIB -> IXB -> IXC

this is not betting on fotball teams, if the IXC is as bad as they say later in the war I have enough points to make whatever choices I like later.

It depends on your style.

With the Type IX you can be out for longer and even afford to waste a few eels, but I never did like the IX because of its maneuverability issues - escaping DC attacks is way easier in the VIIC, not only for the dive time but she's easier to con.

Depends on waht u want. I invested in the VIIC/4 coning tower.

The VIIC with a VIIC/4 coning tower has 4 heavy flack guns. Eather a Quad 2.7 or a 3.7mm flack(the one that has to reload after each shot). Invest in that. It takes down alot of aircraft. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Even though I miss my VII, I still love the firepower and goodies that my IXB has. I just got a new conning tower that has 2 mounts for my dual flak guns, decoys, radar, and a sonar coating(which I don't think does s#@t). It is slow to respond but but I like all the eels.
