View Full Version : Sorry----Water=3 again

Gents and Lady:

I know this was dealt with alot a while ago, but since the search engine here is out (I did go back through about 25 pages, but really didn't find a good answer, and then got lazy..)
I upgraded over the holidays to a P4-3.0GHz, 1GHz RAM, GeForce 6800 GT, 2GHz disk space and some other bells and whistles. I've got Water=3, all game settings maxed out, Nvidia settings are AA=8x5 and AN at 4x, and the res is 1600x1200. [I really don't see much difference between 1152/1280/1600, but 1600 is a bigger number so it must be better, right? Sorta like having an "11" on your guitar volume knob.;-)]

But I can't get that glassy, reflective look to the water. Don't get me wrong, this game ROCKS and the eye candy is superb. So is the water actually, except for the lack of that reflective water look I see in the screenshots. Thanks to any and all who respond.

Have you set your graphics settings to Perfect mode yet? Water=X doesn't get activated and has no effect until you set it to perfect mode.

1600, 1280, etc. are resolution numbers. The higher the number, the smoother the image because its being drawn with "smaller dots" (we'll leave it at that). Its just more precise. But it also takes more processing power because there is more information per frame that has to be dealt with.

Ah...Bingo! Looks great, but FPS took too big a hit. Great for screenshots, though.

Thanks VW.

Not a problem.

Yeah the FPS does take a big hit. Experiment with the water settings (0-3) and with the resolution settings. Some guys can make Water=3 be a playble sort of thing...or so I've heard.

I've got a Radeon 9700Pro and the Water=0 does the trick for me!

Set you water to =0 and Hardware shader on. You will get great water with very little hit on the frame Rate.
This was posted by someone else before just letting you know. Not my finding.
But I use it and like it alot.

My water is set to 1 on Perfect with an ATI 9800 Pro and looks close to that... I just wish I could get the color to improve. It is too dark right now. I am using 4.11.

How are you folks with an ATI card able to run perfect water? I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I know you can't get it in d3d, and when I run it in OpenGL I get a lot of graphic issues. I am currently running 4.12 drivers, had the same problem with 4.11 as well.

Make sure to set your graphic options to your card, *NOT* on any custom settings.

WOW. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Is that what PS 3.0 does to water? What rez, and average FPS do you get flying with water=3 Rose? Do the X800's support the new Pixel Shaders, or do I need to be thinking about buying another nVidia card (which I was doing anyway - SLI)?

No ATI card at present supports Pixel Shader Model 3.0 which is what PF is using with the GeForce 6800s to create the wave geometry. The PS3.0 model essentially lets the card generate 3D geometry based on a flat 2D texture. Its pretty impressive...and as we can see, very spectacular.

ATI cards and anything without PS3.0 enabled will be able to utilize upto Water=2 which also is quite spectacular and visually impressive. Personally, water=0 is the one I use and its enough.

No go here. I still get major graphical issues, both in the cockpit and on the map. Once I start looking around the cockpit, white and black blocks start appearing on the cockpit, almost looks like a checkerboard patter.

Running real good in d3d though.

The planes look pretty good but the ships look like cardboard! But thats not really noticable while flying.

****....

is it possible to run it playably with the 6800?

I have a 6600GT and can run water = 3 but its far too jerky to play seriously

I'm using water = 1 at the mo, what should I use? what does water = 0 look like?

SHMall35

Water=0 looks just like Water=1 without the Reflections

jason_peters
01-10-2005, 05:19 AM
Yes its playable - just

U have to turn off AF to make it playable and run at 1024 res then u keep 30 FPS.

I plat at 1280 res and AAx4 ans AFx2

I set water to 2 and forest to 3

Every patch seems to improve things a little.

Its strange as it looks as if its the forest / ground that eat the FPS when using shaders 3. I get 30FPS over water on my normal settings - just drops to 20 over the ground

ok so ... after reading all of this .. bottom line is:

You cannot get this water effect with ATI 9800Pro 128mb card, you can only get it with next gen cards .. right?

I just get 2d shodow ripples flat onto the shiny glass water effect, im guessing thats the best I can get with my card?

WUAF_Black-Rose
01-10-2005, 11:44 AM
Its impossible for an ATI card to get this water!
Its just with Nvidia card (6600 - 6800)!

pauljames01
01-10-2005, 11:46 AM
Hoorah, a straight answer, all the other were you cant get this effect .. but if you try this ..etc etc.

Thats all I need to know, thanks.

J_Weaver
01-10-2005, 11:57 AM
Yep, its only possibie with the Nvidia because it is the only one that supports the shader or what ever its called. I've heard that the shader eats fps big time it is that true?

This is the best my ATI card will do....water=2 only, looks a lot calmer, can the waves get biger than that on an ATI card??

EDIT: Deleted the screenshot as having problems with people seeing it??

Yes finaly ATI works - using Open GL / perfect landscape / water=3

So the shader 3 nvidia only spin was a myth. Thank god I got it to work.

RocketDog
01-11-2005, 09:39 AM
No. PixelShader 3.0 is only availble on the 6800 series cards. The hardware used on the current generation of ATi cards does not support PS 3.0. If you set water=3 in conf.ini on an ATi card, you will get water=2.

The PS 3.0 water is recognisable by its very rough looking surface with small waves.

Regards,

RocketDog.

I wouldnt dare play with water 3. I`m on p4 3.4, 1 gb of 3200 ram and a gf6800gt@ultra speed, and I find the sim to run " decent. " With that I mean 40-60 fps, but I still feel every god **** framedrop and it hurts a little bit inside me. Yeah, probably spoiled after all that fps-gaming .. but still. Oh, yeah. Running 2xq fsaa, 8x aa and 1280*960 res. Must say fps are pretty poor.

Only thing I really wonder about if there is any posibility to get mirrors with water1..Doesnt seem that way

codeseven7
01-11-2005, 10:25 AM
The appearance of the water has become so good that it has surpassed the looks of the rest of the sim. Now in Water=3 the ships and planes are beggining to look archaic unless viewed at a distance. I think SHMall35's pic's here using his ATI card show more of a balance in appearance between water and other objects actually giving it a more realistic appearance.

don`t really know what I`d go for.

I`m currently on the 3.4 ghz p4, a gig of ram, gforce 6800gt ( originaly clocked to ultra speed but pf craps out on me as only game ) and my fps are .. well I sure as hell am NOT impressed. But I`m suspecting I`m just to needy with fps .. hehe. You can`t use water 3 whatever you do, if not using sli mode, so I would actually get the x800xt if you can. It`s fast as hell .. and seems to lack the weirdo speedproblems of the 6800gt. But thats just my thoughts. Not a big fan of either nvidia or ati http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This is what I get with an Ati 9800XT with Water=2 1280x960x32 AA set to App Preference and FSAA at 4x.

No FPS probs at all and water is still awsome at 2.
