Over the last couple of weeks I have been putting a system together for my 10 year old son,to replace the old P4 2.66 /9800 pro he is currently using. That was my original gaming computer, and it still does play il2 pretty well, but as I had a few parts left over from my last build I thought I would try to put a newer system together.
I already had a Gigabyte skt 939 board,4 X 512 ram sticks,an X800XL card, and a spare PSU.I sold a few things on ebay (books, roof racks etc) and used the money I made to buy other parts.I got a new case,a used 200 GB hard drive,a used DVD Rw drive, and today ordered a new skt 939 4000+ cpu and fan,and a copy of win XP.So far, with a bit of buying and selling,it has cost me about 80 altogether, which is not bad for a skt 939 amd 64 4000+ /2 GB ram system! So it can be done cheaply if you invest a bit of time and effort!
This is the case I am using, pretty cheap, but its not bad,and my son chose it!

Absolutey agree mate,

Mid-Range AMD systems using either Skt 939 or AM2 can be built so very cheaply at the moment, because most people are buying Core2Duo systems.

As long as you arent taken in by the hype, then you can see that an AMD 4200+ X2 system is around the same speed as a Core2Duo E6300 but much cheaper. Intel undoubtably rule the performance sector, but IMO AMD still rule in bang-for-buck.

My upgrade was also a real bargain...

ALl I needed to uipgrade was the motherboard (Skt 939 Asus A8N Deluxe-35), CPU (4200+X2 - 40) and Gfx Card (PCI-E GF 7900GS - 60).

I reused my 2GB of PC3200 memory and everything else from my Athlon XP system. I got a system that will play ANY game for the forseeable future at nice res and gfx for 135.

Just like you Uther, I love building great PC's as cheaply as possible!

One thing I've enjoyed about putting together computer systems is how I can keep building a better and faster machine more cheaply than the one before. While I went with a pretty good Intel Core 2 chips this time, I still spent $300+ less than on the AMD system I built last year. Both systems were from the ground up. When I think of cost of the first store bought 386SX we got in 1990 , I'm truly amazed. If only all consumer products would show the same cost to performance value over the last two decades, we'd live in a magical world.

don't forget that ATI midrange cards are also something to look at http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

JG52Uther and Xiolablu3: what is the frame rate can you get with your system in Perfect Setting (and at which resolution)?

TY

bluedragon, these are the frames I was getting when I had the X800XL card in my system, with a amd 3700 processor:

Risible in the extreme---if you want to really get the maximum from the game you will be laying out money like a drunken sailor on a bender in Hamburg. I long ago quit keeping records because I come from a family with a banker, and I inherently am appalled by extravagant folly. IL-2 is an extravagant folly, and I love it. I am looking forward to burning one thousand dollar bills for the new gen BOB system and peripherals---like a hole in the head, but I'll do it.

the cuerrent system i'm on i just built last month. I have about 650.00 USD in it.

Picked up a Mother board, procsessor & GB of ram from Sparx in summer of 2005 for 200.00.
it sat in the closet till jan 08. lol

not long after i got that from him i bought a 450W power supply and a thermaltake Sunami Dream tower.... which i love this tower.

Canablized the gate way for the 809 gb hard drive, DVD RW, CD RW drives, and graphics card.
and old 8500LE card i got from Gypsy.

since the mobo i bought from sparx had on board sound...i just left the OEM Soudblaster live in the gateway. bought a 2nd 80 gb hd, and a copy of xp. that was 170.00 and i spent about 160.00 on the case & power supply.

got it up running....ok.

then Gypsy sends me late christams gift....a used Audigy 2 ZS & a X800xl. (what a cool guy Bill is.) disabled the on board sound....poped in the 2 new cards and viola!

new system. grand total of around 600.00 to 650.00 bucks.

I am looking forward to a new system...I had been looking for a new CPU to replace my aging AMD Athlon 1.6. The fastest one that would run in my mobo was a 2.1 at a cost of $70. Not bad, but I ended up just uping the bus speed, so now it runs at 2.1 anyway. Have run the piss out of it to make it overheat or crash. Runs just fine, even with stock fan. I do have a 2nd case fan ($10). Now that's cheap.
Upgrading soon though....still running a used GF3 Ti4200!!!
