The I-16 is a great turn fighter but it doesn't take many hits in the engine before it goes down. The engine doesn't fail imediately so the oponent doesn't always recognize it. But after a few minutes the engine fails and I have to head for the deck. Usually the airport is way out of reach because it glides like a brick. Does anybody else have the same experience?

Anyway, this old fashion looking bird is great fun to fly and so small that it is hard to target.

Actually not.

Flew 56 missions with the I-16 and wasn't shot down a single time, but had almost 200 enemy-planes shot down.

It outturns anything on this planet (except a 153, perhaps) and the guns are just awesome, with almost no deflection.

The only big minus of this thingie is the relatively low speed. You know how to involve the boomers into a curve fight, or just shoot at the right moment.

But you are right, somehow. The engine can be hit easily, especially against rear gunners. But you just close the radiator and it takes the gunner a lot of hits, to actually cause damage. It would be okay, if the engine would overheat, due to the missing airflow, but well.....

So, compared to ANY other aircraft, I-16 IS uber.

It has never happened to me when flying I-16, although I fly it very occasionally. However, I once made a mission where I was a gunner of HE-111 and 4 I-16s were attacking me. They came from my six and the first two of them I got from quite far distance, 500 m and over. The third one I shot down when it was passing me first time (my engine was in flames at that time, though). The fourth one finally got ME, so that was end of it. But I saved the track and when watching it, I found out that all of those three I-16s went down due engine failure! No smoke, no ripped wings, not any signs they were hit but the propeller not spinning... And the engines were cut off almost instantly! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I've also got few "easy" kills in dogfights against I-16s by just shutting off their engines. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

So they do have a weak spot /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I agree with Pettera, a few shots in the engine are enough to bring the plane down, and the pilot is also quite vulnerable...and it doesnâ´t dive very well neither...although its turning capabilities are great.

I used to think they were uber but not so much anymore.

attack with an angle off tail of say 10-20 degrees and a quick burst can bring the wing off or get a PK. but as others have said, at zero you have to aim for the engine, which often does the trick.

BUT the fuselage does seem very robust, to put it mildly. I've found that I can take an Il2 down by going for the fuselage (early ones break in 2 from a quick spray by a 109E) easier than I can an I16 - can that be right?

It is only uber if you fly it with some easy options,
If you fly on full real. It sucks!!!
