Ok this game is cheap! Its the computer that's expensive. Hey no problem ive got a new Dell for Chrismas (Because im just going to surf the net with my new puter eh). New Mobo (Whats that no Agp slot!) Ah Dell! Video ( Whats that! Onboard won't run the game I just got for Christmas)I'll need an ATI 9800 pro at least!, RAM (What do you mean 256 aint enough! The thing is brand new) , PSU (Who would have though Dell would sell a puter with a 200 watt PSU! DOH!) , Force Feedback Saitek (This is just a guy thing) , and a Headset ( Im lookin like a pilot now). Only thing left of that old (New) Dell is the Monitor and Case. (Momma hasen't even noticed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)So whats left? Ah! A new sound card! So i'm in the deep end now what the hey! Ordered a new Audigy 2 to replace my onboard AC 97(Oleg must be in cahoots with the hardware guys http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif).

Ok so here is my question guys what am I to look forward too! Everything to date has been worth the money. Is the sound worth it as well?

Yea. You will really enjoy the improvement over the onboard sound. Make sure it is running on "Full" in your dxdiag and max the settings out in IL2 Setup folder under the Sound tab.

I run 4 computers and 3 will play this game. I recently had to replace the very old turtle beach sound card, circa 1996/1997 and figured I would replace the sound blaster live 5.1 in my PIV with an audigy 2 and then put the sound blaster in my older PIII. well I only use head phones or 2 desktop speakers so I noticed absolutely no difference over the sound blaster 5.1 card. again I doubt very much head phones will test the cards abilities. If I had 6 speakers and a sub woofer.... well I am sure I would notice a difference.

as far as video cards go if this game is the main game you play or if the other games you play use Open GL then stay clear of ATI cards. Nvida has about 50% more performance than a similarly matched ATI card when it comes to open gl games. on the other side of the coin if you mainly run games that use 3d direct x (or what ever its called) than go with ati over nvida because the ati is much better.

here is one of many bench marks I have seen ati vs nvidia which shows the nvidia has a significant advantage over ati while running this game. I have seen similar bench marks over at simhq.com

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/2004-27gpu2_24.html

and the main site with all the video cards, scroll down to the bottom after your done looking at almost every video card ever produced for many many many bench marks. real bench marks which use games just some bogus aqua mark score.

I had the opportunity to use both the 6800 256 mb (don't remember which model, it was a $400 card) and the x800 Pro (same price). They produced similar numbers in this game. The Nvidia could run water =3, but you wouldn't want to play with that setting, from what I saw on my machine. The Radeon seemed much smoother, less stuttering to me. This is only what I saw on MY machine. I gave up the 6800 and bought the ATI. I've had 2 GeForce cards and just got my second ATI, so while I'm not firmly in either camp, I'm partial to radeons at the moment.

The audigy card is a good call. I replaced my SB Live! with the Audigy 2 ZX and very pleased. Not that the sound quality is any different ( no matter what the numbers are on the box, MOST human's ears will never be able to tell the difference, except with the proper speaker set up because of the extended surrond capabilities). My machine just ran better. I had better game perfomance, and fewer sound hassles. I resisted getting one for a long time, and I wish I'd done it sooner.
