ok guys - after many years I have to admit failure and seek redemption.
every time I go into a barrel roll I either loose height or dont roll smooothly. Please help . Is it that I dont have my stick position right ? Do I have to push forward when upside down at top of roll and pull back when normal at bottom or hold stick or hold it steady in one place? How wide is the arc your nose makes ?

I have thrustmaster top gun fox pro joystick

please help this poor sinner http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

record a track, and watch yourself do it. that should give you an idea of where you're going wrong

Smoothly? What is this "smoothly"?

Nothing smooth about a barrel roll.

It is not an airshow, geometric 8-point pretty boy roll.

It's an "oh sh**, tracers are flying around the canopy, I gotta do something QUICK" evasive maneuver.

It's supposed to be "sloppy" and off-center, the better to throw off the aim of an attacker.

From level flight, pull back on the stick (if you're losing alt, this is likely what you're forgetting), and add rudder to one side. Then as you pitch up, begin to roll. Center rudder or add more, whatever you need to do to keep the roll from being a aileron roll around your flight vector.

Keep tumbling around in the dryer cycle until you're ready to recover. That's a barrel roll.

ah... lol so for years on end I did my barrel rol wrong.

I always did this:
From level flight pull the stick back slightly and with the elevators roll to one side and now and then "shake my tail" with the rudder

lol

it worked but yhea it apprently isn't a barrel rol

yeah dieg. what stiglr said. you've probably been doing it right all along! just pull up a bit, roll and throw some rudder in. corkscrew around a complete roll and you're done.

It is very common to loose altitude in a barrel role. It all depends on what you need to achieve. If you have an enemy at your six', you can put up your nose by about 45degree's and start maing a roll. At the same time, pull back your stick a bit. This way, you'll make a nice barel roll wich can put you ar the six of your enemy, if he doesn't do anything funny. The key is putting your nose up high enough before startin to roll.
